Baldur's Gate 3 Sorcerous Sundries puzzle guide

There are several quests that all collapse back on the vault deep inside Sorcerous Sundries in Baldur’s Gate 3. But whether you’re here for a book, to help a companion, or for sick magical items, you’ll need to decipher the puzzle at its heart to plunder its rewards.

An easy way to get access to this place without too much hassle is to remove Lorroakan the wizard, through the Find the Nightsong quest. I ousted him at the conclusion, and while I’m not sure if it was required, it sure felt necessary. Either way, once you’ve gained free access to the top floor, you can navigate your way down the floors via the floating tables and search for the vault.

How to enter the Sorcerous Sundries vault

The vault key is located on the lowest floor. If you’re wondering how I got that info, it was not exactly standard procedure.

Head down the tables and you’ll see some Weave Buttons located around the room. A few spring Cloudkill traps, though they’re easy enough to avoid if you accidentally trip them. The first one you’re looking for is here:

This will send a character to the lower floor, where they can find two keys: the Sorcerous Sundries Mystery Door Key and the Heavy Iron Key. Both are useful, so hold onto them.

Secondly, find this Weave Button:

That’s your ticket into the vault itself.

Don’t worry too much about the seemingly infinite chasms and move ahead. Eventually, you’ll pass a purple portal and need to find a button to press on the wall. After that, move forward and find a door opened by the mysterious key.

Once inside, you’ll be greeted with a room of four doors, each bearing the names of prominent magicians. Silverhand, Karsus, and Elminster are the ones we’re concerned with. Navigating each of these means deducing their meaning, as well as having a Rogue or dexterous character handy for all the traps.

A detour for a solid buff

Before finding the main treasure of the vault, there’s a useful buff hiding in another area. Head through the following door combination:

  • Silverhand
  • Evocation
  • Wish

This will lead you to a lever that opens the Elminster area, giving you access to The Thracite Codex. Whoever interacts with this first will receive a curse, dropping their Constitution by 5. Use a spell to remove the curse, however, and it changes to provide 20 temporary hit points each Long Rest.

This is also where you’d finish out the Necromancy of Thay quest line. I didn’t pick this one up in Act 1, so I wasn’t able to close it out here. We’ll update with more info once we’ve seen it.

Now, heading back to the main branching point, we’ll take another tour through the doors. Remember to disarm traps as you come across them. They’re a real doozy if you don’t. Our sequence this time is:

  • Silverhand
  • Abjuration
  • Silver

Once through, you’ll find a lever that opens the Karsus door. Exit back out to the main branch hub, then through the Karsus door, and you’ll find the vault containing the recollections of wizards’ greatest case hubris.

At this point, you’ll have the option to chat with Gale about what he can do with all this knowledge. Make your own calls there, but make extra sure to loot the room before you leave. There’s some good equipment and spell scrolls in here, the latter of which should help Gale get endgame ready. And now you’re done raiding Sorcerous Sundries in Baldur’s Gate 3.
