Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive game that will take you dozens of hours to explore. Fortunately, your character won’t be going on their adventure alone, and they’ll be joined by quite a few possible companions. You’ll come to rely on your companions more as you progress, encounter larger enemy hordes, and face different obstacles. Consequently, the composition of your party can be a make-or-break factor.

Best Baldur’s Gate 3 party compositions
You are limited to a total of four characters in your traveling party, including your main character. You can certainly have more companions, but when you leave camp, you can only be linked to three other friends.
Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a staggering amount of freedom, which is fun to take advantage of. However, with so many options available, it becomes impossible to cover all your bases. As a result, you’ll have to decide what you will specialize in, and how your party will attack.
You may keep different party compositions depending on the task at hand. For example, one composition could be used for battles while another may be better at exploration thanks to their deception skills or ability to detect traps. When constructing your party, consider the following roles that they could play:
- Support – It’s useful to have a character around that can heal their allies. It’s even better if they can boost the team’s attacks and protect them from harm. There are a few Classes that serve as good Supports, including Bards and Clerics.
- Melee Fighters – Some Classes excel at close-quarters combat. Give them a sword or a mace, and they’ll pummel anything in front of them.
- Tanks – It’s no use for party members to hit hard if they die too quickly to attack. Therefore, it’s good to have a tank on your team that can take a beating before serving it back.
- Ranger/Stealth – It’s not always a good idea to go for direct attacks. Either utilizing stealth or attacking from a distance are great ways to take your enemies by surprise. Rogues and Rangers are particularly good at this role.
- Spellcaster – There is a wide range of spells available for your enjoyment. Some of them are very powerful, allowing you to command your foes, have them incapacitated with laughter, or simply bound by flames. Get a Wizard on your team, and you’ll master magic in no time.
- Charmer – Your social skills are also important. Being able to deceive and persuade others will save you from many unnecessary combat scenarios. Have a silver-tongued party member and you can manipulate your way to success.
There is no single party composition that can be declared the objectively best one. When you’re designing your party, always keep in mind the most important factor – you! The party should work with your main character, helping them to achieve their goal whether it be to safely explore a new area or take on some enraged foes. The following party compositions are effective examples you can use for your own adventure.
Combat team
There are a few options when it comes to constructing a good party for combat. This is one of the possible compositions you could try.
- Support – You need a character to heal your party when they’re hurt. Bards and Clerics can serve this role, though you can also use a Druid.
- Melee Fighter – Almost all teams benefit from a good melee fighter. Though she may be annoying at times, Lae’zel is one of the best Companions to have.
- Spellcaster – With a Wizard on your team, you can put your enemies to sleep or hold them in place while you catch your breath. Gale is a great companion to have for this.
- Tank – A character with high hit points will be hard to bring down. Try Paladins and Warlocks for this role.
Adventure team
- Charmer – When you’re out on your adventures, you’ll come across lots of NPCs. Keep a Bard for this, and let them speak first at all times.
- Support – Even when adventuring, you could fall into traps and get hurt. Once again, it’s a smart idea to have Shadowheart as a support Companion.
- Ranger/Stealth – You can talk to animals to uncover secrets or gain useful allies. To do this, you need the Ranger Class.
- Spellcaster – Although combat may not be as important when exploring, you do need some protection. The Spellcaster will help you on this front, so keep a Wizard on your team.
Jack of all trades team
If you’re unsure about what you want to do just yet, or you don’t know what to expect, you should aim for a more generalist team that can provide you with adequate advantages. You can do this with the following party:
- Support – Keep a strong Cleric to take care of your team. Shadowheart is the best for this role, and you can add her to your team pretty early on.
- Melee Fighter – You need a strong character to land those deadly blows. Get a character from the Fighter Class, such as Lae’zel, who you can also befriend early on.
- Charmer – There aren’t many characters as charismatic as Wyll. If you don’t have high Charisma or Intelligence, add Wyll to your team, or any Bard.
- Ranger/Stealth – You’ll need a character that is good with a bow and is stealthy. Make your main character a Ranger, or befriend one along the way.
It can be tricky figuring out what to say to get a Companion onto your team. For this reason, it’s a good idea to save often and create multiple save files so you can jump back to prior points. With this said it can be fun to embrace a few failed dice rolls.
