Rayman fans are over the moon after the announcement that the limbless hero will be featured in the next Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope DLC. However, there might be more to look forward to. The game's director, Davide Soliani, teased a return to glory for the French platforming mascot Wednesday. He also confirmed there will be a secret message if you finish the DLC with a 100% completion rate. The prospects of the first Rayman game since 2013 might come to fruition.

According to fan community leader ItzalDrake from Rayman Together, Sparks of Hope director Davide Soliani sent a message to the character's fanbase just before the launch of the Phantom Show DLC:

"I hope that all the community and all Rayman players support us as much as possible because I'm on a mission: my mission is to be able to bring Rayman back to the glory he deserves."

https://twitter.com/RaymanTogether/status/1694386555723342118

When was the last Rayman game released?

The limbless hero has been absent for a long time, which is strange as he was an important mascot for Ubisoft during the beginning of the studio's history. The last true game in the series was Rayman Legends, released back in 2013: a decade ago this month. If you want to go all the way back, the last 3D platforming adventure Rayman 3 came out in 2003. A fourth entry or even a follow-up to the 2D platforming subseries would be a dream for many fans of the series.

Soliani did not outright confirm a new game in the series, but as previously mentioned, he has teased a secret hidden message for those who 100% complete the DLC. "I hope for your support and I hope you like it!" he concluded in his message to the fans.

Starfield preloads start soon for Xbox and Windows, later for Steam https://www.destructoid.com/starfield-preloads-start-soon-for-xbox-and-windows-later-for-steam/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=starfield-preloads-start-soon-for-xbox-and-windows-later-for-steam https://www.destructoid.com/starfield-preloads-start-soon-for-xbox-and-windows-later-for-steam/#respond Thu, 17 Aug 2023 12:38:51 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=397077 Starfield preloads have begun

Get ready for liftoff. Starfield preloads begin Thursday as the game has just gone gold (which means Bethesda's development of Starfield is effectively complete!). Now, players can download the game pre-release on its platforms, but it will be truly ready to play when September 6 (or September 1 for early access players) rolls around. Unfortunately, Steam users will have to wait longer for Starfield preloads to take effect.

Those who own an Xbox Series X|S or a PC with the Xbox app can preload Starfield on August 17. Players on Steam have to wait much longer as preloading on that platform occurs on August 30. If you've bought the Premium Edition or Constellation Edition physically or digitally, you'll be able to gain access to Starfield five days early on September 1. To make the wait even more arduous, the Xbox Twitter page says its hand is moving "closer to [the] giant LAUNCH button."

[caption id="attachment_397078" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Starfield preloads start on August 17 for all Xbox platforms. Image via Bethesda[/caption]

After delays, Starfield is actually ready

Starfield was originally going to be released on November 11, 2022, but it was pushed back almost an entire year. “We know you’ve waited a long time to play something new from us," said director Todd Howard after announcing the September 6 release date in a trailer. "Believe it or not, we’re kind of the same."

He later said, "We really just can't wait for you all to play it." Now we're nearing that time. Many games from Bethesda's past were criticized for awkward facial animation and bugs across the board, but this new game engine may take Bethesda to the next level. It could lead to impressive showings for upcoming games like The Elder Scrolls VI. As of last year, that fantasy RPG is currently in a design stage of development.

You can even customize your own spaceship to your liking. It's a sci-fi fan's dreams come to life. I really hope it lives up to everyone's expectations, just like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim did in 2011. It would be a huge win for Xbox Game Studios if Starfield lands with players and critics.

The 9 best games similar to Starfield that you can play now (Updated) https://www.destructoid.com/best-games-like-starfield/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=best-games-like-starfield https://www.destructoid.com/best-games-like-starfield/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2023 12:00:34 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=367638 Games like Starfield

While Starfield is nearly here, you might not be partaking (for whatever reason!). From the thoroughly entertaining The Outer Worlds to the unrestricted freedom of No Man's Sky, let's look at the six best games thematically similar to Starfield that will satisfy your sci-fi-loving brain right now.

[caption id="attachment_367652" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Chorus Sci-Fi Game Image via Deep Silver[/caption]

Chorus

One of the most underrated games in 2021, Chorus should be on your list if you crave sci-fi action. While you can't get out of your spaceship and wander about, there is an open area to explore as you fly at high speed through asteroids and space gates. The combat impresses with its fast-paced action and powerful weapons. There's also an intriguing storyline to follow, complete with side quests to complement it.

[caption id="attachment_367674" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Elite Dangerous Games like Starfield Image via Frontier Developments[/caption]

Elite Dangerous

Want to explore the stars but you're stuck at home with a 9-5 job? Elite Dangerous might be able to transport you beyond the skies above. You'll be upgrading your ship as you fight enemy forces, explore the beautiful cosmos, and soar amongst the stars alongside your friends. There's also a major sense of scale as the developer claims on its Steam page that "the entirety of the Milky Way [is] re-created at its full galactic proportions". It has been free on the Epic Games Store in the past, so check your library if you haven't already.

[caption id="attachment_367676" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Mass Effect Legendary Edition Image via EA[/caption]

Mass Effect Legendary Edition

One of Bethesda's greatest aspects is its storytelling. The majority of its games have immense lore and an intriguing storyline full of interesting characters. The Mass Effect series offers a similarly strong narrative that has you invested in its roster of heroes and villains. In addition, the worldbuilding is outstanding, as you get more intrigued by the factions and environments of this sci-fi universe the deeper you delve into it. Hopefully, Starfield will offer a story that has just as much drama as the legendary BioWare series.

[caption id="attachment_367643" align="alignnone" width="1200"]No Man's Sky Games like Starfield Image via Hello Games[/caption]

No Man's Sky

With one of the rockiest launches in modern gaming history, No Man's Sky was a shell of the promises original made by the developer Hello Games. Fortunately, over the years, the game has received wide acclaim for its bevy of features, stunning landscapes, and introduction of co-op. The randomized nature of the game has given us strange new creatures and gorgeous scenery that fans often share their pictures of No Man's Sky. Starfield also features many, many worlds; No Man's Sky has likely inspired Bethesda with its daring concept, for better or for worse. Hopefully, the former.

[caption id="attachment_367661" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Outer Wilds Games like Starfield Image via Annapurna Interactive[/caption]

Outer Wilds

If No Man's Sky doesn't tickle your fancy, Outer Wilds might instead. You're exploring a solar system that is trapped in a time loop, and it is up to you to solve the mystery behind it. The planets in this game each offer their own little secrets to discover as you find out details about the Dark Bramble and the alien ruins across the system. While there are no RPG mechanics to speak of, Outer Wilds will likely give you the same exploratory rush in Starfield. Nevertheless, Josh Talentino called the game "Superb" in his review for Destructoid.

[caption id="attachment_367670" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Outer Worlds Obsidian RPG Image via Private Division[/caption]

The Outer Worlds

The closest game you'll get to Starfield is probably The Outer Worlds. Not to be confused with the similarly titled last entry, this Obsidian FPS/RPG has an exciting and engaging campaign. You'll find well-written characters, an entertaining loot-and-shoot game loop, and a captivating story. The Outer Worlds does not feature interspace combat or a huge universe to explore. However, the densely populated environments have engrossing side missions and inspired art design. In fact, The Outer Worlds was Destructoid's 2019 Game of the Year.

[caption id="attachment_395803" align="alignnone" width="640"]Death Stranding combat Image via 505 Games[/caption]

Death Stranding

While there aren't "traditional" RPG mechanics in Death Stranding, that sense of exploration from Starfield is present in the game. You’re delivering packages throughout the world and helping connect the once-separated areas of post-apocalyptic America back together. Directed by Metal Gear Solid veteran Hideo Kojima, its sci-fi concepts are thought-provoking and stunning to behold.

The interactability between players is also unique as you help each other form a better world. Death Stranding’s available on Xbox Game Pass for PC if you want to check it out.

[caption id="attachment_395804" align="alignnone" width="640"]Deliver Us the Moon gameplay Image via KeokeN Interactive[/caption]

Deliver Us The Moon

If you want to explore a sci-fi world without chaotic shooting gameplay, Deliver Us The Moon might be your ticket. You’re exploring a space station that is unresponsive and within it, you’ll discover exactly what has happened. The story is told in a quiet, yet impactful way. The puzzles are also well-implemented.

The detailed environments also present the story well, hopefully like Starfield. It’s a sci-fi game that’s a breath of fresh air (well, at least as fresh as it can be in space).

[caption id="attachment_395805" align="alignnone" width="640"]Star Wars Squadrons gameplay Image via EA[/caption]

Star Wars Squadrons

Lastly, there’s Star Wars Squadrons. The force is strong with this one! If you want to prepare yourself for ship battles in Starfield, you can control various Star Wars ships in Squadrons, and it's a rush to shoot an Imperial ship in an X-Wing in this game. The cockpit view is also one-to-one to what Rebels like Wedge and Luke saw back in the day with all the visual do-hickeys and buttons intact.

As our review notes: “It finds a great balance between making the player feel like a responsible pilot and a complete badass.”

Three new characters were announced in a stellar Mortal Kombat 1 trailer. You'll be able to play as Ashrah, Havik, and Reptile when the game arrives on September 19, 2023. Ashrah is a surprising choice, as she hasn't been in the series since the PS2 game Mortal Kombat: ArmageddonRegardless, she looks like she fits in with her brutal Fatality. Sareena is also coming back, but as a Kameo fighter this time around.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves hypes up the crowd

After The King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown getting acclaim from fans and critics alike, the Fatal Fury series is returning with City of the Wolves. Not much was announced, but there was a little teaser by SNK, showcasing Terry and Rock Howard in the game. The graphics seem to be an upgrade too, with more visual details and improved lighting.

No release date has been given, but SNK fittingly said it is "furiously in development."

Raven and Azucena join the Tekken 8 roster

Fan favorite character Raven and the coffee-obsessed newcomer Azucena are a part of the Tekken 8 roster. Raven is using his shadow skills that might remind you of Naruto's Shadow Clone Jutsu. Meanwhile, Azucena has an intriguing dodge feature with some tasty counters shown off in the trailer. Tekken 8 still has no release date attached.

The in-development 2v2 fighter Project L is adding the champion Yasuo into the mix. His move set includes a far-reaching sword and quick attacks in the air. He can also release tornados and wind walls against his opponents.

"He can outplay with mix-ups, he can go to the air for really technical combos, play defense with his wind wall, or honestly just win neutral with his huge normals," said lead champion designer Alex Jaffe. Sadly, no release date for Project L was announced amid all the news at Evo 2023.

Killer Instinct is getting a huge update

Cult-favorite Killer Instinct is getting a major update from Xbox Game Studios and Iron Galaxy for the first time in years. It will include better matchmaking, a balance update, and all-new 4K support on Xbox Series X|S. It will be coming this Fall. Now that Iron Galaxy and Xbox are working together on this, perhaps talk of a sequel could arise between the two companies after Rumbleverse's shutdown in February.

Maypul comes to Rivals 2

Finally, the fox-like combatant Maypul joins the Smash-like Rivals 2. She brings three different plants with her to the battle, including Lily, Terry, and Poppy. She'll also be the fastest character in the game. Maypul's combos look thrilling in the trailer itself. The game launches sometime next year.

That's it for Evo 2023 news cycle. Which fighting games are you most looking forward to next year, and will you be playing as Michelangelo in Street Fighter 6's avatar battles?

What makes an exciting fighting game stage? Let’s dive in https://www.destructoid.com/what-makes-an-exciting-fighting-game-stage-lets-dive-in/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-makes-an-exciting-fighting-game-stage-lets-dive-in https://www.destructoid.com/what-makes-an-exciting-fighting-game-stage-lets-dive-in/#respond Tue, 01 Aug 2023 18:00:35 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=394290 Best fighting game stages

The best stages of fighting games transport us to an exciting arena. It could be a stunning wilderness, a ruckus crowd, or an ancient temple. What's most important is how they set the tone of the fight and if the intractable nature of the stage is well suited to a fighting game. Let's hear the roar of the crowd and get stuck in on what makes an exciting fighting game stage.

[caption id="attachment_394297" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Street Fighter 6 Genbu Temple Image via Capcom[/caption]

The stunning setting from stages of fighting games

Arguably, the most important element is the graphics of each stage. There's always a balance between being too simple and too distracting. For example, I hate it when pro fighting game players always pick the plain white training stages during EVO or local meetups that take me out of the experience. On the other side of the coin, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final Destination has way too much going in the background that keeps me off focus.

The best fighting game stages have enough flair to be entertaining but not too still to the point of boredom. Duomo di Sirio is one of my favorites from Tekken 7for example. There's not a lot going on in the background, but there's an elegance to the European-inspired setting. There are sculptures in the background and illustrative architectural touches that make it stand out. As the battle continues, you can punch your foe off the balcony, giving a more dynamic feel to the fight. The stage's music is also exhilarating.

Bustling or serene, fighting game stages can fit different qualities

Additionally, the best stages show the environment's culture perfectly. Street Fighter 2's Shopping District depicts a bustling Chinese market. There's a cyclist rolling down beside the fight as a chicken flaps its wings inside a cage, a woman is washing her hands in a bowl, and meat is hung up by hooks. To give a more recent example, Street Fighter 6's Fete Foraine presents a stunning Parisian night. The Eiffel Tower is glowing in the background of a market filled with a clown, food stalls, and a spinning ride. There are also people enjoying their food on red and white cloth tables. Capcom does a great job of detailing its stages with all sorts of references and cultural reflections of each environment.

If you want a stage that's more serene, take a look at Genbu Temple, also in Street Fighter 6. It's not populated with onlookers to the fight, but the slight monochromatic styling of the stage next to the pink blossom trees is so striking. Awesome stages can take different forms.

Cinematic stages

NetherRealm's recent fighting game output has provided interactive stages. They're cool because your environment presents a new layer of strategy to each bout. In Injustice: Gods Among Us, you're able to bounce off a car's hood to get out of the corner or ride a motorcycle into your opponent in Wayne Manor. There's even the option to smash The Joker's face into the car. You can also launch your opponent out of the arena with an impressively detailed cinematic cutscene.

Meanwhile, Dragon Ball FighterZ impresses anime and fighting game fans alike with its thrilling animations that seem ripped straight from the show. One critical element of the stages in this game is how they can crumble around you. If you use a powerful ability, the environment is wiped out, adding believability to the intense cutscenes that play beforehand.

The music

While some games focus more on the character themes nowadays, each stage's music is important in capturing excitement in a fanbase. While Jin and Heihachi are simply fighting on a shallow ocean floor and nothing else, the "Infinite Azure" track is spectacular. The beats are addicting and maintain an intense tempo, but there remains a calm tranquil tone that's refreshing to listen to. It features a few surprises in the composition, like a heavier emphasis on the percussion mid-song. Without this music, it would be a dull yet beautiful stage to fight in.

Going back to Dragon Ball FighterZ, "West City" retains the upbeat yet heavy stakes of battle. The deep bass, strings-focused melody, and then the horns all make for an epic theme while you're fighting against the likes of Tien, Cell, and Goku. While the environments show an accurate recreation of West City from the anime, the music truly makes it a fantastic stage I go back to over and over again.

You cannot talk about great fighting game stage music without mentioning "Jazzy NYC" from Street Fighter III: Third Strike. The deeper cymbal section at the beginning represents a hip-hop energy as you enter New York City. The theme is lively and has you bobbing your head up and down. The jazzy saxophone-like MIDI has an amazing solo in the middle of the song that just exudes energy. It's one of, if not the, most popular stage theme in Street Fighter history. If the music is right, it will emphasize the stage's vibe perfectly.

What are your favorite fighting games stages?

There are so many fantastic fighting game stages out there. I personally have a soft spot for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale's novelty approach to mixing two games into one area, like God of War and Ratchet & Clank in Metropolis. There's also the majesty of Tekken 5's Moonlit Wilderness with its gorgeous moonlit sky and flowers that glow from its light; it has an epic theme with it, making this stage the ultimate package. What are your favorite fighting game stages?

Each Tekken in the series is usually a landmark for console generations, with its spectacular graphics and superb game design, and that's certainly the case with Tekken 8. With its stunning lighting, entertaining new Heat system, and crisp netcode, this entry is certainly going in the right direction with its closed network test. Get your fists ready if another test or the full game arrives soon. There are many reasons why I can't wait for the next battle.

[caption id="attachment_394395" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Tekken 8 graphics are phenomenal. Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

The next evolution of Tekken

The Tekken series has stepped it up again with its thrilling combat system. It keeps evolving, with each game adding a new compelling element; this time, it's the Heat system. The Heat Timer heightens the attack power of your character and enables you to chip damage away from foes even if they're blocking. You can only use it once per round, but it is key to your survival. Heat Smashes can be activated during the timer, letting you perform a flashy, yet powerful attack. It takes around a fifth of your opponent's health. The Heat System ups the stakes as it runs out, and the other player desperately blocks incoming strikes for around 10-15 seconds.

That's not all about the Heat system, however. There are certain moves—like Jin's Heat Engager—that activate the timer automatically within a combo. Button mashers may hate this, but if you use it strategically, these moves can be effective at disrupting your foe's reign-of-terror combos. Another way to stop your foe from attacking is a Power Crush. It's a counter that's utilized to stop yourself from getting juggled. Rage Arts are also back and are flashy as ever.

Tekken 8 feels great to play with all-new moves and combos to initiate on your opponent. In the excellent training mode, you can get used to the precise timing with every strike if you want to link a combo. Tekken 8 shows awesome bread-and-butter combos to perform on your enemies, and you can watch a video demo with the inputs on the screen. Combo challenges can also be shown through the UI, so you can reference them quickly. It's an approachable game for newbies who want to become intermediate players online.

How is the Tekken 8 netcode?

Despite Tekken 8 likely being many months away from release, the netcode during the alpha seems to be a success. Many games ran smoothly, as if the other player was sitting next to me in a local tourney. However, I did encounter a somewhat laggy game, despite there being five bars on my competitor.

[caption id="attachment_394396" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Paul in Tekken 8 Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Damn, Tekken 8 is pretty

If you look at the trailers, you may believe there isn't a huge jump in graphical quality. Think again. Once you're playing it on a PS5, it's absolutely stunning. The facial animations of characters like Lee Chaolan are astonishing as he exaggerates his mouth and eyes. Additionally, you can see the intense hatred in Kazuya's face through his eyes on the main menu; it's actually haunting whenever you boot up the game.

The environments are filled to the brim with detail. The puddles in the New York stage reflect the lights from Times Square's advertisements, and the lighting from the neon signs stands out sharply on screen. You can even see the haze of smoke in the distance, and the crackling of the earth beneath your competitor's feet. The action is all in a wonderful 60 frames per second as well. You could name it as one of this generation's prettiest titles. Thank goodness there isn't a PS4 or Xbox One version holding it back.

As each battle continues, you'll see the sweat pouring from the characters as they desperately fight to win. Paul's sleeve breaks apart as he readies up his Rage Art and it remains that way for the rest of the match. Bandai Namco seems to pulling out all of the stops to make this as stunning as it can be.

Another neat factor of the game is the unique intros for rivalries in Tekken 8. When friends Lee and Paul face each other, they cross fists, breaking apart the glass under them in the Arena. It looks similar to how each Tekken trailer begins. This addition is a nice touch for long-time fans and adds further intensity to the fight ahead. The same happens with Jin and Kazuya as well.

Tone down the distracting music

Tekken 8's soundtrack is more like something you'd hear on a dance floor than an arena. The dubstep is obnoxious and distracting for some of the tracks included in this closed test, especially in the Urban Square stage. However, there is a standout banger for the Yakushima stage. It feels like a more rounded composition with gorgeous strings, stunning vocals, and a pumping backbeat that keeps the song moving forward. That's until the final round creeps in, and there's a blast of incessant dubstep within an otherwise great track. If this trend continues into the full game, I'm prepared to lower the music volume to 0 and put on my own playlist.

The electronic composition for the Arena stage is also decent but, in my opinion, goes way too hard with the bass. So far there are no tracks that come close to bangers like "Heat Haze Shadow" or "Infinite Azure" from Tekken 7 or Tekken 5's "Moonlit Wilderness."

Tekken 8's stellar so far

Bandai Namco hasn't pulled its punches with Tekken 8Every character is animated incredibly well, and the action feels fluid, even more so than in Tekken 7. The new mechanics like the Heat Timer adds to the formula, creating a more fast-paced fighter that will be thrilling to watch at EVO and other tournaments. The music is a somewhat letdown as it's gone way too hard on the electronic and dubstep from past entries, but Tekken 8 is a promising fighting game I can't wait to get my hands on.

Like a kid in a candy store

[Updated: July 2023]

Xbox Game Pass is like walking into a candy store. There are so many different options to choose from when it comes to its game selection, and some of the best games on Xbox Game Pass can be hard to spot.

Some need acquired tastes like licorice (It Takes Two) while many others will enjoy a beloved, comfortable chocolate bar (Minecraft). However, there is at least one sweet game you'll enjoy with the service. Here are the 10 best games on Xbox Game Pass right now.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

[caption id="attachment_374862" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Game Pass Image via Bethesda[/caption]

Those seeking adventure should look towards The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. This (take a deep breath) 12-year-old game (breathe out) still has a fervent fanbase, and is still played to this day for good reason. There are many weapons, armor, spells, and even dragon shouts to find across the open world. There are also branching side quests that in and of themselves have deep, fascinating stories and characters behind them. You should take an arrow in the knee in this game and explore the grand landscapes of Skyrim with Xbox Game Pass. The Special Edition also comes with all of the DLC.

Halo Infinite

[caption id="attachment_374612" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Halo Infinite best games on Xbox Game Pass Image via Xbox[/caption]

In my opinion, Halo Infinite gets way too much flak. This entry was my first step into the series, and I was floored by this sci-fi experience. Each weapon in Master Chief's arsenal feels powerful, but in the frantic first-person shooter levels, you're scrounging for whatever you can find, adding to the tension of battle. Finding improved weapons from the tough bosses you kill in the open world is gratifying, and the world itself truly grabbed me. The storyline with Master Chief saving the UNSC and the world on the brink is also thrilling to experience. The multiplayer, to me, feels dated with tired map design and modes, but the single-player campaign is the main attraction.

Hi-Fi Rush

[caption id="attachment_374614" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Hi-Fi Rush Xbox Game Pass Image via Xbox[/caption]

Hi-Fi Rush is one of the best Xbox exclusives in years. It combines thrilling action combat with engaging music rhythm gameplay to create a unique melee-focused experience. You play as a unique, clumsy protagonist, trying to save the day from Vandelay Technologies' evil leader. The slapstick is on point, and the script is laugh-out-loud hilarious. The action is also fantastic as you switch between the powers of your allies and string together combos on your foes.  You also can't forget the stand-out music selection in Hi-Fi Rush with rock hits from Nine Inch Nails, The Prodigy, and The Black Keys. Hopefully, we get a Hi-Fi Rush sequel in the future.

Minecraft

[caption id="attachment_374760" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Minecraft Xbox Game Pass Image via Xbox[/caption]

There's not much else to be said about Minecraft but I'll try my best. It's a worldwide phenomenon for a reason as it allows players to build their own structures, craft their own items, and explore a randomly generated world. Building with your friends is a lot of fun, and many players have created amazing buildings throughout the years like Hogwarts from Harry Potter. Someone even made a working 3D graphing calculator. This game is great for kids, as it lets them show their creative side and figure out how to build materials in the game. Despite existing for over a decade, the game is still getting updates and DLC based on Mega Man X and SpongeBob SquarePants

Monster Hunter Rise

[caption id="attachment_374766" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Monster Hunter Rise Best Xbox Game Pass games Image via Capcom[/caption]

After many years of struggling to get into the series, Monster Hunter Rise finally got me on the saddle. Alongside your friends, you're taking down monstrous beasts, collecting their materials, fur, etc, and then crafting incredible gear for your player. It's a rewarding game loop that keeps you playing for hours on end. There's a strategy to each battle, and you need to keep your wits about you to survive in some of these encounters. What made Monster Hunter Rise click with me is the new maneuverability of the wirebugs that let you zip from place to place like Indiana Jones' whip. You can also mount your pet palamute, letting you get to the battle quicker. It's one of the best games on Xbox Game Pass because of how gratifying collecting resources and physically seeing your character getting stronger is.

Persona 5 Royal

[caption id="attachment_374767" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Persona 5 Royal Game Pass Image via Atlus[/caption]

Want a game that will entertain you for over 100 hours? Persona 5 Royal is that. This turn-based RPG is a more mature take on the Pokemon series as you capture demons and turn them into personas, using them for special moves in battle. There are many spells and abilities to master as you proceed through well-crafted dungeons called palaces. The story is also exceptional as it dives deep into current topics like the power of social media and how it can be a force for good or evil.

But there's more to the game than the turn-based battles. You're getting to know the Phantom Thieves and other classmates from your school through the Social Link system, playing mini-games, and improving your character's stats and cash reserves with jobs and working out. If you haven't checked out the game before, you should know Persona 5 Royal is a must-play on Xbox Game Pass.

Need for Speed: Unbound

[caption id="attachment_393669" align="alignnone" width="640"]Need for Speed Unbound on Game Pass Image via EA[/caption]

Exhaust-ed of Forza Horizon and need another enthralling racing game to play? Need for Speed: Unbound could good detour. The rush of driving through its city streets brought me back to the days of Underground 2, and you can deeply customize your car, go on tough street races, and try to be the best in the city.

There’s also a unique anime-like art style, and cast members have a unique shader that makes them stand out. There are also vibrant visual effects as you drift around corners and boost. Go check this one out!

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

[caption id="attachment_393670" align="alignnone" width="640"]Assassin's Creed Odyssey Game Pass Image via Ubisoft[/caption]

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has been out for almost five years now, and I'm still surprised when anyone tells me that they've finished it.

This game’s absolutely massive, taking place in a stunning Greek-inspired open world. You can tell Ubisoft did its research with the spectacular architecture and intriguing culture to be found in the game. Kassandra (one of the two possible playable cahracters) is one of the best protagonists in the series; she has spunk, charming humor, and an overall badassery that few other Assassin’s Creed heroes can match. The story also takes twists and turns you’ll find fascinating. Oh, and the combat’s thrilling with a deep customization system alongside it.

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge

[caption id="attachment_393672" align="alignnone" width="640"]TMNT Game Pass Image via Dotemu[/caption]

A gorgeous throwback retro art style? Check. Exceptional beat-em-up action? Check. Yummy pizza slices? Cowabunga, dude! TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is radical with its high-intensity battling. You can team up with three other players (no matter if they’re local, online, or have a different system) to battle Shredder and the Foot Clan.

Each character offers a unique battling style, and every boss is challenging to defeat. The levels are also detailed with all sorts of references and have their own gameplay surprises in store.

Dordogne

[caption id="attachment_393671" align="alignnone" width="640"]Dordogne Xbox Game Pass Image via Focus Entertainment[/caption]

If you’re fatigued from the intense FPS gameplay of most triple-A games, Dordogne is a fantastic palette cleanser. This game features a beautiful watercolor-like art style and a compelling narrative that tells the story of a woman’s childhood. It’s charming and adorable, but there’s an element of drama in the background that continues to grow as the game proceeds.

You’ll also interact with the environment in unique ways. Don’t miss out on this French indie game!

Best Persona 4 songs, ranked https://www.destructoid.com/best-persona-4-songs-ranked/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=best-persona-4-songs-ranked https://www.destructoid.com/best-persona-4-songs-ranked/#respond Tue, 25 Jul 2023 21:00:44 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=392765 Best Persona 4 songs ranked

Persona 4 has a treasured soundtrack with many great tunes that'll get you pumped for battle or grinning from ear to ear as you hear the Junes Theme playing. It also helps establish the season as the school year passes, like "Snowflakes," which plays during the final months of the game. While you're in battle, on the other hand, the rocking beat of "Reach Out To The Truth" keeps you focused on every attack. I am thou, thou art I, here are the best Persona 4 songs, ranked!

Note: This list includes Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden tracks, no spin-off titles.

10. "Specialist"

https://open.spotify.com/track/0nAeo4gKT75vw5QmkZLdHB?si=da8e4145411d4e78

There are very few shopping video game themes that are cooler than this. This piece has a pleasant, chill melody highlighted by a jazzy piano and an awesome percussion beat that will put on a smile on your face. You can't help yourself while you bob your head up and down to the rhythm.

9. "Reverie"

https://open.spotify.com/track/28AYf50QPbB8AhC4OYU7uQ?si=2a4960c3020c43c7

Honestly, there's not much to say about this piece. "Reverie" plays when Yu and the gang reflect on what just happened. The piano plays a beautiful tune while whirring instrumentals that float above the piece give a melancholy vibe. It's a striking song that perfectly reflects the situation the team is in whenever it plays.

8. "Never More"

https://open.spotify.com/track/7wsNi1SE40YS9YYCj44EQ4?si=b3462e0c7a264256

This ending credits song is a wonderful track that establishes the strong bonds between Yu and the friends he's made along the way. The vocals are lovely as Shihoko Hirata sings about the memories the investigation team has made over the past year. The piano in the track also gives a neat reference to "A Corner of Memories" from the beginning of the game. As Persona 4 is such a long game, it actually feels nostalgic in a sense as you've known these characters for weeks, maybe months.

7. "Your Affection"

https://open.spotify.com/track/6idKSeBnFz49htgvyWoMro?si=44ac27cc45d54733

Rolling through Inaba, it was always a delight to listen to "Your Affection." It's a happy-go-lucky song as it encourages you to turn "your misery into meaningfulness" and take "pride from fear." This song is the levity we need after going through all the dungeons during the Midnight hour. During sunny days, it matches perfectly with the colorful visuals of this lovely small town.

6. "The Almighty"

https://open.spotify.com/track/2SzaLThldhzZgZBOLJoYuK?si=9ca468f6c8db4e3b

This song is steeped with so much drama. The strings and heavy bass at the beginning illustrate a great tension, and then the gripping main melody from the guitar seeps in. About a minute in, the percussion goes faster, adding stakes to the boss battle. You then get a soothing, echoed piano and guitar taking over the piece, likely showcasing who you're fighting for, like Nanako and all the residents of Inaba. Later on, the main guitar and the soothing section collide in an epic clash that somehow works together. It's a unique take on a boss battle theme as it switches between the two styles constantly; it's like a tug of war about who's winning the fight.

5. "Signs of Love"

https://open.spotify.com/track/32NyN0Tby1YpKObfd8nrzN?si=3554fce9e1514dfc

"Signs of Love" has everything I love about the Persona 4 soundtrack: a funky beat, charming lyrics, and some entertaining jazzy overtones that keep the track riveting. There are also strings in the background that reflect the slight tension that befalls the teenage protagonist. It's a great track that I'm happy to listen to over and over again as each in-game day passes.

4. "Reach Out To The Truth"

https://open.spotify.com/track/7JR73H8enwnGiYFS2I6eWW?si=183dea8a012f4691

"Reach Out To The Truth" is a fantastic battle theme. The rocking guitar gives tasty jams, while the jazzy keyboard provides more character to the piece. The drums also keep up the intensity while the Hirata nails her performance. It does get more repetitive than the other battle themes on the list, but it's still an exciting piece for many Persona 4 players.

3. "Snowflakes"

https://open.spotify.com/track/3Ybug08EbRV4RZfcw8WZMk?si=7f97b3f31c7e4ce9

Persona 4 Golden adds a beautiful track called "Snowflakes" that establishes the journey is almost over. It's a sad, yet calming track that fits into the winter season. It talks about the "friendship that is built to last" and the "laughter from this treasured place" that will stay in each character's memories. Similar to "Never More," it gives us a nostalgic feeling, reflecting on the past year, similar to thinking back on the past year during New Year's Eve. The tune from the piano, vocals, and beats are also stunning to listen to.

2. "Time to Make History"

https://open.spotify.com/track/3fHtkMIsiv9kC0Tv2iSS3h?si=f25f817629ac422b

Goodness, I love this song! The bass absolutely slaps as the delightful vocals get us hyped to "step on up to the plate" and "time to make history." It's an absolute jam.  It's fun how all of the instruments ramp up together during the chorus, and the drums once again make their presence known in the best way. When I played Persona 4 Golden, I was always more excited to hear this number over "Reach Out To The Truth."

1. "I’ll Face Myself (Reincarnation)"

https://open.spotify.com/track/1PraA0CrjHLo16lwUw6NSq?si=814328a804dd47bd

Drama. Intensity. High stakes. This is what "I'll Face Myself (Reincarnation)" brings to Persona 4. You have a slow unassuming beginning that ramps up quickly to an intense battle theme. The emotional strings play well with the intense drums. The flow also keeps changing, giving you unexpected twists and turns in this epic boss battle music. Composer Shoji Meguro wasn't afraid to include slower pieces to this boss battle theme, adding an emotional element to the track. He went all out with the ebb and flow of this piece. It's remarkable and is one of the best Persona 4 songs, absolutely.

A hot season starting to cool down

This year's summer has been chock-a-block with incredible games from Final Fantasy XVI to Street Fighter 6, but things are starting to cool down with the August 2023 games lineup. There are still some great games like Sea of Stars and Baldur's Gate 3 on the horizon. However, we can take a bit of a breather as most of these anticipated titles are fairly niche. Here's everything you can expect from the August 2023 games release schedule.

The legendary studio behind Dark Souls and Elden Ring (From Software) is bringing back a mech favorite with Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon.  The Steam page claims it's bringing the developer's "signature action gameplay" into the mix with "fast-paced, omni-directional battles." Each fight will be set in "massive stages," and now with better graphical fidelity, the action will look even more intense and stunning. While there isn't any Souls-like combat from this sequel, you can deeply customize your mech just how you'd like it.

Your judgment will impact your mech's movement and even its battle style. The Steam page claims that "each mission can be approached with a unique mech strategy." Something you'd expect from From Software is boss battles; this game comes with them in spades. Hopefully, this game lives up to the extremely high expectations of the developer's huge fanbase after its 2022 magnum opus Elden Ring. From the pedigree alone, this is one of the most anticipated August 2023 games.

RPG fans, rejoice! Baldur's Gate 3 is finally leaving early access on August 3. There is deep customization in the game, allowing you to pick from 12 classes (with 46 subclasses) and 11 races (including 31 subraces) for your hero/heroine. Larian Studios also claims your decisions will leave an impact on the storyline. "Every choice you make drives your story forward, each decision leaving your mark on the world," says Larian on the game's Steam page. "Define your legacy, nurture relationships and create enemies, and solve problems your way."

We'll see how grandiose the story is when the game fully releases, but it certainly sounds promising. As the game is set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, it will be based on the 5e ruleset. You'll be rolling the dice for your actions during combat and can interact with the environment in unique ways. Oh, and you can have romantic relations with a bear...if that's your thing.

The game looks exciting with plenty of intriguing enemies to fight and a sense of verticality within its level design. The graphics look pristine as well with gorgeous visual effects and grand environments.  It's one of the more intriguing August 2023 games on this list.

EA has a busy month in store because Madden NFL 24 is also dropping in August. Instead of slinging spells, you'll be throwing footballs and handling them better with an improved version of FieldSENSE. EA claims on the game's Steam page that it's "giving you greater control and delivering realism to all the ways you play." Additionally, there's a new feature called the SAPIEN technology. Apparently, it adds more realism to the body definition and variation of the athletes' physiques. EA claims this results in "realistic player movement."

EA also says that your teammates' ratings and situational awareness have improved since the last game with better AI. Thankfully, Madden NFL 24 will include crossplay, allowing you to play with your friends on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. While this is not my particular cup of tea (soccer should be called football, damn it), this year's Madden seems to be a big step up. It might be worth waiting for it to come to Xbox Game Pass, however, like Madden NFL 23.

Trailer

Sea of Stars is the standout indie out of the August 2023 games list. Sporting wonderful 16-bit inspired graphics, Sea of Stars will wrap you up in some good ol' JRPG goodness. It's seemingly inspired by classics like Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG. There's a turn-based combat system that relies on timed button presses. If you time them correctly, your damage will increase. As the game proceeds, each combo will progress in difficulty.

The animations are absolutely gorgeous within the art style, adding even more of a nostalgic rush to the game. The game does feel modernized, however, with no random encounters and no grinding to speak of. Go at your own pace and stop The Fleshmancer performing their evil doings. To keep you entertained, there are other activities in Sea of Stars, such as fishing, cooking, and a tabletop game called Wheels.

Captain Falcon would be an awesome Tekken 8 character

Many Nintendo fans only know Captain Falcon as a Smash Bros character (despite his racing origins), and his melee-based fighting style seems well suited to a traditional fighting game. It stands to reason that his moves from Super Smash Bros., translate perfectly into Tekken 7! The Captain Falcon Tekken 7 mod by JSRRemix and Mr. Fletch completely rework Noctis and impressively "shows his moves" like the powerful Falcon Punch and explosive Falcon Dive.

The mod has been blowing up since content creator UMIN uploaded an impressive reel of Captain Falcon's attacks and model on Twitter Saturday with almost one million views. In the past, they've debuted trailer-like videos for mods based on Overwatch 2's KirikoFinal Fantasy VII's Cloud Strife, Soul Calibur's Ivy, and Hatsune Miku.

An impressive Captain Falcon Tekken 7 mod

https://youtu.be/BKXIQ95F7Hw

Captain Falcon fits right into Tekken 7. In this Showcase video, he demonstrates the ability to juggle his opponents in the air with his precise kicks. He can also do a flip kick that looks impressive in Tekken 7. The Falcon Kick does seem busted as it's so fast, but Noctis' abilities with his sword are also astronomically quick.

Captain Falcon's Up-B in Smash, the Falcon Dive, is used as a flashy conclusion to an air combo. Not many characters in Tekken 7 have this set up in the air, so it's a neat change to the flow.

What does the mod do?

[caption id="attachment_392025" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Captain Falcon mod in Tekken 7 Screenshot via UMIN's YouTube channel[/caption]

With the TKDataPatcher mod tool, you can add him to the game by using Noctis as the base character. You'll have to go to the Character Customize menu to get Captain Falcon ready.

Then, you can alter the shading of the hero; you can go with a darker, shadowy look to the racer. There's also a brighter toon shader option that fits his Smash Bros. look. Either way, you can't go wrong. UMIN has provided a download link to the mod featured in their video description. There's also a tutorial you can follow here to install TKDataPatcher.

Keep in mind that UMIN claims in the comments of the video that the mod is currently unfinished, but you can play the custom character right now.

15 best free games on Steam right now https://www.destructoid.com/15-best-free-games-on-steam-right-now/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=15-best-free-games-on-steam-right-now https://www.destructoid.com/15-best-free-games-on-steam-right-now/#respond Thu, 06 Jul 2023 20:30:02 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=367056

There's plenty to play with zero to pay

If you want to experience free games on Steam, there's thankfully a lot that the store has to offer. You can gallivant with your friends on hostile planets in Destiny 2 or fight Superman with Bugs Bunny's ACME rockets in MultiVersus.

The best free games on Steam offer a ton of content and have as few restrictions as possible. These 15 titles certainly do that in spades.

Apex Legends

[caption id="attachment_367071" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Apex Legends Free to play Steam Image via EA[/caption]

One of the best battle royales in the market right now is Apex Legends. It provides the high-precision gunplay from Titanfall 2 and brings it into the competitive battle royale space. Sliding down hills and using each hero's powers is satisfying to perform in the game. There will be many intense moments as you contend against opposing teams, and the game provides many opportunities to fail or succeed. The free-to-play model is a little on the expensive side if you want cosmetics and more characters, but playing from the base roster is also entertaining to start Apex Legends with.

Brawlhalla

[caption id="attachment_367065" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Brawlhalla Free games on Steam Image via Ubisoft[/caption]

If you're annoyed you can't play Super Smash Bros. on PC, check out BrawlhallaIt features a smooth platform fighter experience that plays great online. It also has a vibrant cast of characters to choose from. Many will be locked behind payments or in-game progression, but there is a regularly updated free rotation of characters to choose from. One of the game's unique strategic elements is switching two weapons available to each player. Each weapon's moveset is radically different, and you'll need to decide which option best suits the situation.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

[caption id="attachment_367067" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Counter-Strike Global Offensive Image via Valve[/caption]

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is the definition of a great first-person shooter. The controls are highly responsive, there are deep tactics involved with your equipment selection, and a few of the maps like Dust 2 still remain one of the greatest in the genre's history. It's gained a strong following for a reason, so if you're bored of Call of Duty and want something free to play, you can't go wrong with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

DOTA 2

[caption id="attachment_367070" align="alignnone" width="1200"]DOTA 2 Steam Image via Valve[/caption]

One of the hardest genres to get into is the MOBA. They require pinpoint accuracy, attention to detail, and communication between team members. However, once you have all the kinks figured out and win game after game, it's all worth it. DOTA 2 provides a long list of characters to play as, each with their own role and powers they can offer to the battle, providing many hours of gameplay. When DOTA 2 first came out, Destructoid called it "a modern multiplayer masterpiece" and it can be argued that remains to be the case today, 10 years later.

Emily is Away

[caption id="attachment_367225" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Emily is Away Best free games on Steam Image via Kyle Seeley[/caption]

Emily is Away is a nostalgic journey back into the Windows XP era of communication. There was no Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram. Instead, you used to chat on AOL Instant Messenger. This unique storytelling device isn't just a gimmick, however. There's a beautifully told narrative about two friends who have grown apart from each other since high school and are trying to reconnect. Despite there being no voice acting, all the emotional beats are there, as you await Emily's response. Try this one-hour game out when you can. It's one of the best free games on Steam.

Guild Wars 2

[caption id="attachment_367066" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Guild Wars 2 Steam Image via NCSoft[/caption]

Can't afford Final Fantasy XIV Online or don't want to bother with the Battle.net client on PC for World of Warcraft? Guild Wars 2 is a good third option for an MMO. You can play the entirety of the engaging core campaign for free. However, there are restrictions you should keep in mind, like locked content until you reach a certain level. Despite that one fault, Guild Wars 2 offers a stunning world enriched with entertaining MMORPG gameplay.

Farlight 84

[caption id="attachment_390516" align="alignnone" width="640"]Farlight 84 Image via Farlight Games[/caption]

Tired of Fortnite and want something new? Farlight 84 may be your antidote. It blends the art style of Epic Games’ battle royale and mixes it with the ability-based system of Apex Legends. The result is a solid shooter that impresses new fans of the game and isn’t even out of Early Access yet. The weapons feel heavy and powerful, and the overall environments look pleasing to the eye. Just turn off the voice acting; it’s pretty bad!

Lost Ark

[caption id="attachment_367171" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Lost Ark free games on Steam Image via Amazon Games[/caption]

Want to play a game like Diablo but don't have the money? Lost Ark is a good free-to-play option for you. It has vibrant graphics, exhilarating combat, and MMORPG mechanics that will bring all of your friends together. You can explore the game's open world and fight PvE or go PvP against players around the world.

Marvel Snap

[caption id="attachment_367180" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Marvel Snap free Steam games Image via Nuverse[/caption]

Everyone knows and loves the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so a card game based on the property could be a cheap cash-in. Fortunately, Marvel Snap is a cherished title for fans of card games, and it's free to play. "At work and at home, I just can’t put it down," said CJ Andriessen in his review. "With its structure and speed, it doesn’t feel as tactical as some of the other card games I’ve played, but it finds a way to be satisfying in its brevity." Each match in Marvel Snap also only lasts for three or so minutes, as opposed to Hearthstone, making this quick and easy to play.

Path of Exile

[caption id="attachment_367224" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Path of Exile free games on Steam Image via Grinding Gear Games[/caption]

Path of Exile, despite it being a free Steam game, is an excellent alternative to the Diablo series if you crave more ARPG goodness. It features a tonne of passives to unlock through the huge skill tree system. It also includes plenty of classes, including the Duelist, Marauder, Ranger, Scion, Shadow, Templar, and Witch. Path of Exile will offer hours upon hours of content for the low, low price of $0, and it also has PvP modes like tournaments and Capture The Flag.

Team Fortress 2

[caption id="attachment_367706" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Team Fortress 2 Engineer Screenshot via Valve YouTube Channel[/caption]

A cherished multiplayer game for many Team Fortress 2 is an absolute classic. This team-based shooter has you playing different roles. One can be the Heavy, dealing a lot of damage with his mini-gun. Another player can send out Sentries and Teleporters throughout the map as the Engineer. There are many options available, so you can find the right playstyle. Despite the game being over a decade old, it still holds up visually with a cartoony art style. Give it a go if you haven't already.

The Sims 4

[caption id="attachment_367177" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Sims 4 Free games on Steam Image via EA[/caption]

Living out your dreams as a Sim doesn't necessarily sound fun, but The Sims 4 somehow sucks you in for many hours at a time. You're building your own house, family, and wealth in the game which will feel rewarding. You also grow relationships with other sims by hanging out with them and performing a variety of activities in the community. All of this is now free to play on Steam, so go ahead and download The Sims 4, if you want a chill simulation game to play.

Warframe

[caption id="attachment_367173" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Warframe Free To Play Steam Image via Digital Extremes[/caption]

It's been a decade, but Warframe still pulls in players today. This game is extremely fast with powerful guns and delightful swordplay. It's been supported thoroughly by developer Digital Extremes. The game added an open world, and there is spaceship warfare to be had. The art style is also unabashedly strange as it embellishes its sci-fi genre with pride.

Omega Strikers

[caption id="attachment_390517" align="alignnone" width="640"]Omega Strikers Image via Odyssey Interactive[/caption]

The precision of the MOBA gameplay of League mixed with the sport of soccer doesn’t sound like a great mix, but Omega Strikers certainly proved me wrong. Each character has their own skills to master while you’re trying to score a goal. You can even take out your foes with your abilities by striking them out of the arena. The graphics are gorgeous, the concept really comes through, and the head-bump worthy music will keep your heart racing. Check this game out!

Star Wars: The Old Republic

In a galaxy, far far away, you can experience an epic adventure in the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. It has an original story from Mass Effect studio BioWare, and the game allows you to choose the path of a Jedi or a Sith. Or you can also be a bounty hunter like Han Solo if you’d like. It’s refreshing as a Star Wars fan to experience a different timeline in the franchise rather than Disney focusing on the tried and true formula on Disney+.

Something to keep in mind, however, is that four of the six expansions are hidden behind a subscription fee. Additionally, the level cap is increased from 60 to 80 and you have unlimited access to Flashpoints, Warzones, Operations, and Uprisings with a subscription. There are also a bunch of extras like increased XP, more character slots, and a monthly Cartel Coin grant. 60 days of game time will cost you $29.99.

Preview: Ebenezer and The Invisible World doesn’t have a lot of holiday cheer https://www.destructoid.com/ebenezer-and-the-invisible-world-preview/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ebenezer-and-the-invisible-world-preview https://www.destructoid.com/ebenezer-and-the-invisible-world-preview/#respond Mon, 03 Jul 2023 17:00:20 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=389587 Ebenezer and the Invisible World preview

Humbug!

It certainly isn't a "Silent Night" while playing Ebenezer and the Invisible World. Instead of three French hens and four calling birds, your relatives will hear a ruckus as you scream at the game. There's a lot to like, but the combat needs to be refined before this Metroidvania's release. The visuals call back to those old Christmas specials you watch as a kid, but other than that, there's a lot to be fixed in this holiday-themed game. Here's a preview of the stunning, yet currently flawed Ebenezer and the Invisible World.

[caption id="attachment_389609" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Ebenezer and the Invisible World art style Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Ten lords a-leaping for a great art style

Set after the events of the Christmas Carol storyline, Ebenezer Scrooge is now fighting for the city's people with the help of the spirits he meets along the way. While the demo doesn't particularly show an intriguing storyline, the environments truly stand out with the premise. You see a prosperous holiday version of London with gorgeous architecture, lighting, and seemingly hand-drawn characters across the city. It really pops on the screen and the art style reminds you of straight-to-video/TV animated movies like Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer and The Snowman.

During the main boss battle of the demo, you can see the shimmer of the ice below while Big Ben is beaming in the distance. Buildings around the area are also adorned with greenery and garlands. The way the game uses the forefront is also striking; for example, the lantern on the bottom left of the picture above adds depth to the scene. It's almost like a painting.

While the visuals look fantastic, it does make me wonder if the London area may get dull after a while. The observatory at the end of the demo and the sewers show that there may be other major environments to find in the game.

[caption id="attachment_389615" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Ebenezer and the Invisible World combat Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

The disappointing combat is certainly a Grinch

While the graphics are certainly promising, Ebenezer and the Invisible World's combat certainly isn't. The biggest issue is how your enemies aren't impacted by your strikes. Like Buddy the Elf jumping through crowds for Santa, your attacks do not stagger your foes during their animations. You can't stun them with your strikes, and that befuddled me so many times. As a larger enemy begins to swing its heavy sword, your strikes should interrupt or slow their movement; however, they still carry on with the heavy thud of their weapon. A dodge feature or a way to counter the incoming strike would be appreciated.

Additionally, there's a frustrating foe that throws grenades at Ebenezer. They're hard to avoid and tough to attack. However, there's one spirit that can provide a diagonal attack, which helps greatly. There is a magic meter, on the other hand, so they might not be able to perform the action. You'll have to conserve your magic, like Scott Calvin in The Santa Clause 2. Other foes have annoying patterns that should be addressed during development. For example, there's a flying lantern that sends fire towards Ebenezer. It's just outside of the old man's reach so you need to jump, and if you come into contact with it, you'll take unnecessary damage.

More checkpoints would be a "Joy to the World."

These issues are compounded by a checkpoint system that is too far apart, and the time it takes to run through empty spaces to get to where I was can be supremely irritating. The light platforming, with the help of a friendly spirit, can be entertaining enough to keep you going. With the new abilities you gain along the way, I expect it will be satisfying to revisit previously inaccessible areas.

Despite this demo featuring 30 minutes to an hour of gameplay, I already witnessed a copied battle stance from one enemy to the next. They slam the hammer toward you and have it stuck to the ground; this happens with two different foes so far. Hopefully, there's more variety in the full game like Bloodstained

Please change the music

Christmas movies often have catchy songs and imaginative music that captures your heart. Think of The Polar Express' "Spirit of the Season" and the North Pole theme from the Santa Clause movies. Unfortunately, Ebenezer and the Invisible World lacks that holiday spirit in its soundtrack. There are depressing 30-second loops that have some elements of jingle bells, but the overall composition is such a downer. During my playthrough of the demo, I had to turn off the game's music and put on some Castlevania tracks. It was a much better experience after that.

If it wanted to go for a dark take on the Christmas season, it would be intriguing to hear the composer's creepy takes on classic Christmas tunes like "Silent Night" or "Jingle Bells." Perhaps, it could also take inspiration from Danny Elfman's Scrooged movie score, which has a darker edge than most holiday flicks.

The elves have a lot of work to do

There is so much potential in Ebenezer and the Invisible World. It has a unique holiday-themed world to explore, and the spirits may provide fun Metroidvania elements to the game. The combat system needs to be refined heavily, though, for me to not regift this title.

Mickey Mouse is a keyblade wielder, a mascot at Disney's theme parks, and a part of the Funhouse Friends, but he hasn't been in a platformer for a long time. Thankfully, he and his pals are featured in an all-new 2D adventure on the Nintendo Switch. Developed by Dlala Studios (Battletoads), Disney Illusion Island's visuals are brimming with color. In fact, the Nintendo eShop listing states that you can "be a part of an authentic Mickey cartoon." With four-player co-op, you can bring friends and family to an island that has running, swimming, swinging, and jumping platform action along with bosses to defeat and puzzles to solve. There are also "hidden secrets" to find along the way.

Sometimes it's cool to mix two unlikely things together. Pineapple and pizza, carrots and peanut butter, and fries with gravy are all examples of this. That's also the case with Exoprimal as it features mechs fighting massive waves of dinosaurs. The mixture perhaps shouldn't work, but the intense action of gunfire and high maneuverability of the mechs seem to work well against the rampaging dinos. There are three classes to consider as well, adding more depth to the seemingly simple gameplay. The game's coming to Xbox Game Pass, so hopefully, you can team up with your Xbox buddies and succeed.

One of the most anticipated July 2023 games in the indie scene is Oxenfree II: Lost SignalsIn this sci-fi follow-up, you will meet and shape the stories of those around the protagonist Riley. "Your choices impact who Riley becomes, your relationships, and the story options available to you at every turn," says Netflix on the game's Steam page.

Thankfully, for myself and others, you don't need to play the original to understand the sequel. However, Netflix suggests you'll be able to "dive deeper by playing the original." You'll explore the town of Camena, will discover the strange source of radio signal disturbances, and will try to thwart the Parentage from making a new portal. It sounds like an exciting, narrative adventure full of danger and mystery.

The long-awaited Pikmin 4 finally touches down on Switch systems next month. In this adventure, you'll be creating your own explorer and, with the help of the Pikmin, rescue others like yourself. The unique spin on this sequel sees players explore a world of huge household items. Plants, benches, binoculars, you name it. You'll be collecting treasures and taking them to your ship as you solve environmental puzzles and have the Pikmin escort your objects safety.

The new ice Pikmin freeze enemies and immobilize them quickly. There's also a space dog named Oatchi who can take out obstacles in your way. It's not my personal cup of tea, but hopefully, the long wait for Pikmin 4 will be worth it for fans. Let's gather in the "Forest of Hope."

Remnant: From the Ashes kicked ass when it released in 2019. The follow-up is hoping to continue the excellent third-person shooting gameplay. Each biome requires different gear and weapons as you approach "cunning enemies and large-scale boss battles," according to the game's Steam page. The sequel touts "endless replayability" as there are branching quest lines, lots of crafting options, and like many other live service titles, awesome loot. Gearbox Publishing says that "playthroughs will feel challenging, varied, and rewarding as players succeed against unrelenting odds." Get the party started

The best Switch multiplayer games excel at bringing friends and family together of all gaming backgrounds. Whether you're competing for glory in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or making jokes in any given Jackbox Party Pack, there are a lot of Switch multiplayer games to play. Here are the best Switch multiplayer games on the Switch: just keep in mind a few of them require a Switch Online subscription!

[caption id="attachment_385148" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Runbow Switch Image via 13AM Games[/caption]

10. Runbow

Runbow is a hidden gem to the nth degree.

This party-platforming hybrid has you trying to survive quick platforming levels that constantly fluctuate. Nine players compete to be the first one to the flag at the end, and the wild colorful visuals truly pull you into the game. In fact, the platforms camouflage and blend with the constantly switching colors and disappear, adding an extra amount of challenge. While playing Runbow at an Extra Life event, I was shocked to pass through a tough section, getting so much fun from the chaotic nature of the game. This is a surprisingly entertaining Switch multiplayer game that you should pick up.

[caption id="attachment_385156" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Nintendo Switch Sports best Switch multiplayer games Image via Nintendo[/caption]

9. Nintendo Switch Sports

Nintendo Switch Sports does what it says on the tin. Like Wii Sports, you get a bunch of entertaining physical recreation activities to play. The Joy-Con does a great job of replicating the Wii remote, but unlike Wii Sports, this game supports online play, adding more replayability. You can compete to be the very best and unlock new costumes for your characters along the way.

You can play Badminton, Golf, Soccer (football), Volleyball, Bowling, and one of my personal favorites Chambara. Read our review of the game if you aren't sold yet!

[caption id="attachment_385160" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Ultimate Chicken Horse Switch Image via Clever Endeavour Games[/caption]

8. Ultimate Chicken Horse

I've never laughed so hard at a game than Ultimate Chicken Horse. The goal is simple: You need to head to the exit of the level. However, with each passing turn, you place obstacles in the way.

The action gets chaotic as rotating spikes are stuck to honey and pucks fly towards you at lightning speed. The fun revolves around the idea of making the level as difficult as possible for your rivals, but at the same time, easy enough to finish the stage. It can get so intense that your jaw drops.

[caption id="attachment_385174" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Splatoon 3 multiplayer Image via Nintendo[/caption]

7. Splatoon 3

One of the best Switch multiplayer games is Splatoon 3. The goal is to cover each area with as much ink as possible. If your team expands its ink more than the other, you win. That's it! Kinda.

You're using all manner of different weapons like a bow and arrow, a paint roller, and even katanas to win. The clothes you unlock throughout the game give you different abilities as well. The concept is simple, but Nintendo's maps and unique take on a third-person shooter with ink-splitting makes Splatoon 3 stand out. The co-op-focused Salmon Run is engrossing as well. "You jump into a match, ink some turf, kill some enemies, see who wins in dramatic fashion (sigh or cheer), and repeat," said Chris Carter in his Destructoid review. "It’s a loop that works even better than before because of all the aforementioned wrinkles in the formula, with some gameplay smoothing as well."

[caption id="attachment_385178" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Jackbox Party Pack 5 Best Switch Multiplayer games Image via Jackbox Games[/caption]

6. Jackbox Party Packs

The Jackbox Party Packs are perfect for friends and family. The games are relatively easy to understand, and the only controller you need is your phone (or another device that has internet and browser access). You'll be surviving in Trivia Murder Party by answering out-of-the-box questions, trying to come up with the funniest one-liners in Quiplash, and even trying to get the most dates amongst yourselves in Monster Seeking Monster.

Jackbox Games has so much creativity within its game design, and its Party Packs will help create memorable experiences for everyone in your immediate vicinity.

[caption id="attachment_385197" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Mario Party Superstars Best Switch multiplayer games Image via Nintendo[/caption]

5. Mario Party Superstars

While the Jackbox Party Packs can create memorable experiences, Mario Party Superstars might be infamous for your friendships. The board game-like title has you competing to get the most stars. You're exploring the board, finishing entertaining mini-games for coins, and then by the end of the game, you'll be ranked by the number of stars and coins you own.

It gets really competitive too, as you can steal coins and stars from other players. If you've played a Mario Party game before, you may recognize some of the boards Mario, Luigi, and the like play on. Memorable mini-games also return to the classic series like Mushroom Mix-Up and Bumper Balls.

[caption id="attachment_385235" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Fortnite Best Switch multiplayer games Image via Epic Games[/caption]

4. Fortnite

This may get a lot of flak, but Fortnite is an absolute blast. This battle royale has impeccable controls, a stunning Unreal Engine 5-powered world, and extremely cool weapons that are added each season. It's constantly being updated, adding new surprising gameplay elements. Teaming up with friends, completing missions, and then winning the match is so much fun within Fortnite. The game is far more accessible now for those who don't want to build; there's a zero-build option that is solely focused on shooting and world exploration.

It's also wild to see Kratos, Master Chief, Goku, and Spider-Man all at the same party. With Fortnite, anything can happen. You don't want to miss out.

[caption id="attachment_385202" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Super Mario 3D World Best Switch multiplayer games Image via Nintendo[/caption]

3. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

Excellent game design? Check. Fun four-player multiplayer? Check. Gorgeous visuals? Check. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is the full package. This previous Wii U exclusive excels on Switch with the addition of faster movement speed and the addition of online play. The music is also stellar from the start, especially for the introductory world of Super Bell Hill. I still listen to covers of that track regularly!

The cat forms in 3D World also let you crawl up walls, adding momentum to the already stellar Mario platforming format. It's one of the best multiplayer Switch games you can play on the hybrid system.

[caption id="attachment_385248" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Super Smash Bros Ultimate Best Multiplayer on Switch Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

2. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an incredible achievement. The character list is huge with heroes and villains from all over gaming history. Third-party characters like Final Fantasy's Cloud, Metal Gear Solid's Snake, and Castlevania's Simon Belmont fight against the likes of Mario, Link, and Fox in epic battles.

Tallying up your opponent's health meter to high percentages with your arsenal of attacks and then launching them into the stratosphere is super fulfilling. There's a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competitive scene for a reason as many love the simple, but deep combat of the game.

[caption id="attachment_385266" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Best Switch multiplayer Image via Nintendo[/caption]

1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

The best Switch multiplayer game is undoubtedly Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The tracks are absolutely stunning with plenty of detail and gorgeous artistic visuals. Driving in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe feels perfect as you drift around corners and get a successful boost.

Additionally, the music keeps up the exciting tone with a big orchestra performing the score. This is a game you can set up in a living room, and four people will quickly grab a controller and play. It's simplicity at its best. Hopefully, you can avoid that annoying blue shell!

An impressive sight

A Street Fighter 6 treadmill streamer has impressed fighting game enthusiasts worldwide on social media. Twitter user @thatMarcWithaC uploaded video Monday of the streamer, known as TalesofMrE, playing SF6 online while walking on a treadmill with his fight stick.

The British streamer has straps around his shoulders to keep it in place as he walks forward. What makes this even more impressive is that TalesofMrE achieved a Perfect K.O. while playing Zangief in this setup.

[caption id="attachment_384792" align="alignnone" width="1200"]TalesofMrE Street Fighter 6 Treadmill Screenshot via TalesofMrE's Twitch channel[/caption]

Playing with a Street Fighter 6 treadmill setup

With almost 1,000 followers on Twitch, TalesOfMrE took his treadmill setup online in pursuit of the prestigious Diamond rank. He said he "almost tripped" during his June 5 stream but the streamer still managed to defeat his opponent, accompanied by an evil laugh. While the wire of his fight stick looks hazardously close, TalesofMrE notes that "the perspective of the camera makes it look a lot closer to [his] legs than in reality."

https://twitter.com/thatMarcWithaC/status/1665807673093242881

TalesofMrE eventually achieved Diamond rank, one of the highest ranks you can get in Street Fighter 6, sitting just under Master. Getting a decent workout and playing a superb Street Fighter experience sounds like a lot of fun. Still, succeeding in fighting games at that level requires plenty of concentration and precision, making this feat even more impressive.

When not fighting it out online with bizarre control setups, TalesofMrE also works in the FGC as a community manager at Square Enix!

Time for Kombat!

Fans will be able to get a headstart on the gory glory with NetherRealm's Mortal Kombat 1 Stress Test soon. However, it won't be available to all-komers, nor will you won't be able to download it straight away.

How to gain access to the Mortal Kombat 1 Stress Test

[caption id="attachment_382319" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Mortal Kombat 1 stress test sign up Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Interested parties cannot sign up for the Stress Test via their PlayStation or Xbox consoles. Instead, you'll need to go to WB Games' website on your PC to perform this task. Log in to your WB Games Account or create a new one. After signing in, you'll be given the opportunity to select an Xbox Series X/S or PS5 code. If you're selected, a code should be emailed to you.

Yes, the beta will not be available on PC or the Nintendo Switch. It makes sense as both of these versions are being developed by separate studios QLOC, Shiver Entertainment, and Saber Interactive. Thankfully, you won't need a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscription in order to take part in the test.

Is the Mortal Kombat 1 Stress Test a beta?

Publisher WB Games has said this stress test shouldn't be considered a beta. "The purpose is to deliberately stress our online infrastructure and identify potential issues ahead of the game’s launch," said WB Games in an official Q&A. "The test is also unrelated to the Mortal Kombat 1 Pre-Order Beta that has been announced for August 2023."

If you don't want to play Mortal Kombat 1 until it's fully released, you'll have to wait until September 19. You can test your might on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store). A PS4 and Xbox One release is not currently scheduled. If you want to get back into Mortal Kombat earlier than that, the prior entry is available on Xbox Game Pass

Review: Star Trek Resurgence https://www.destructoid.com/reviews/star-trek-resurgence-review/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=star-trek-resurgence-review https://www.destructoid.com/reviews/star-trek-resurgence-review/#respond Thu, 25 May 2023 15:00:46 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?post_type=eg_reviews&p=381515 Star Trek Resurgence review

Star Trek Resurgence is Resolute

Captain's Log: Star Trek Resurgence succeeds at telling a gripping story, like many episodes of the long-running series. However, in this game, you're taking on the important role of First Officer Jara and Petty Officer Carter on the U.S.S. Resolute. You'll make impactful decisions, solve mysteries, and truly think on your feet. It's exhilarating as a casual Star Trek fan, but the game does suffer from annoying bugs that detract from the experience.

[caption id="attachment_381702" align="alignnone" width="640"]Shields up in Star Trek Resurgence Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Star Trek Resurgence (PS5 [reviewed],  PC, Xbox Series X/S)
Developer: Dramatic Labs
Publisher: Epic Games
Released: May 23, 2023
MSRP: $39.99

A logical storyline

Over 20 former Telltale staffers—including writers, developers, designers, artists, and producers—are involved in Star Trek Resurgenceand it's clear their story-forward gameplay focus hasn't changed one bit. You're playing as two separate characters—Petty Office Carter and First Office Jara, second in line to the Captain—who have alternate missions throughout the narrative. Both of them have their own relationships they nurture or ruin as we've seen from Telltale games in the past. Thankfully, the vague meme of "blank will remember that" is replaced. Instead, there's a detailed explanation of each character's feelings toward your actions. It's a somewhat evolved form of the tried and true Telltale formula.

The narrative revolves around Jara and Carter as they face a new ancient threat. The game constantly switches between the characters as the plot moves on with each chapter. I won't go into spoilers, but the U.S.S. Resolute faces much more than a diplomatic matter between the Alydians and the Hotari, who are fighting over a valuable resource called Deurideum. As the plot continues, there are shocking mysteries you'll discover that lead to a grand threat to the galaxy. The U.S.S. Resolute and its crew will be fighting for their lives. Carter wants to protect his dear friends, while Jara hopes to maintain a steady ship that's lost so many lives before her tenure.

Difficult decisions

While I'd like more focus on side characters as the series does, the personalities truly shine through. The Vulcan Chovak is frustratingly hard to impress, while Captain Solano is more selfish and wants to preserve his own career over the crew.

Like any other Telltale narrative game, the new studio Dramatic Labs makes your decisions difficult. Each decision carries weight on the characters surrounding Jara and Carter. You'll impress one character, and the other will become upset by your actions. They'll also reference their issues or successes from your past judgment later on. Your decisions matter, and trust is a major factor in the game. As I reached the climax, I felt my choices mattered, and tension hung over me as I was forced to choose. The stakes of your decisions actually shocked me; it's a matter of life and death for your crew.

A slow start

Unfortunately, the plot is somewhat slow and meandering during the first quarter of the game as it dives into the conflict between the Alydians and Hotari. Trekkies will enjoy the deep-dive science found in the sci-fi genre. However, the pace was slow until the antagonist showed their face. It gives a bad first impression, but as the story continues, the riveting plot thickens. This is thanks in part to the excellent voice cast and the well-thought-out script.

As a casual Star Trek fan, there were some terms I didn't understand. It doesn't overall hurt the narrative, but it would have been helpful to have some sort of encyclopedia about the races or a character bio of each person you meet.

Something that could be worked on in a potential sequel is the ability to casually chat with your crew members. We go through the basics with each character's backstory, but I'd like to know more about Commander Westbrook or Lieutenant Bedrosian, for example. They weren't developed enough for me to care.

Almost a Star Trek simulator

[caption id="attachment_381342" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Shuttle piloting in Star Trek Resurgence Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Many aspects of being a Starfleet First Officer and Petty Officer are included in this game. You'll be scanning objects with your handy Tricorder, flying a shuttle, and, of course, setting your phaser to stun as you shoot down enemies, among other activities. There's a certain attention to detail to each object in the game, and the Tricorder being used in puzzle segments is genius. As you're scanning, you're revealing hints about the plot and lore of these worlds.

It's cool to interact with the  U.S.S Resolute's functionality, like the transporter, and even harness technology from other ships. When you go out exploring each world, it's a rush, especially if you're a Star Trek fan. Dramatic Labs is even faithful to all of the ship and gadget sounds, and the visual aesthetics match the timeline this game is set in.

There is one particular mini-game that isn't explained well. At a few points in the game, you have to configure the Buffer Integrity, Signal Harmonics, and Pattern Gain to increase power. Unfortunately, the bars keep moving abruptly, reducing the power meter. For many minutes, I was so confused until I realized that the waves inside the bar determine the wavelength of your power bars. This wasn't explained at all, leading to much frustration.

In addition, flying a shuttle is boring. These sections last too long, and the controls aren't the best as you move up and down space. Other than avoiding rings in front of you, there's not much going on with the shuttle sections other than some conversations between your character and a crewmate.

A somewhat rough launch

[caption id="attachment_381343" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Star Trek game issues Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

With prior Telltale games, you expect jank, and despite using a new engine and forming a new studio, Star Trek Resurgence is no different. Despite the multiple delays, the game's pretty buggy. Faces blur, and hair loses focus whenever a character moves. I experienced moments when dialogue was repeated or wasn't activated whatsoever. Even some important subtitles don't show up during conversations. The game's also not a looker. The models aren't that detailed, and some of the characters' faces genuinely creeped me out.

But every once in a while, the art behind the rough graphics shows beauty. The inspiring attention to detail in each Star Trek computer system, the engrossing environments, and some facial animations strike you from time to time. It does make up for its visual shortcomings at points, like when entering unique alien ships and seeing set pieces such as the huge tractor beam shown below.

[caption id="attachment_381503" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Beam Me Up Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Most narrative games of this ilk allow you to jump into multiple points of the storyline, so you can see the alternate choices take shape quickly. However, Star Trek Resurgence's replayability is hard to deal with as there's a maddening lack of a chapter-select feature.

The cutscenes last a long time, and it would have been nice to at least skip the text. There are multiple scenarios that occur from your decisions, but if you can't access them easily, it truly breaks the fun. Very few people will replay the game just to see each ending and character interaction because of how slow your progress is. You also have to keep in mind the sluggish opening hours as well. Unlike the Telltale games, there are no episodes, so you have to start the 10-hour game from the very beginning. This won't be logical for trophy and achievement hunters.

Engage!

Despite multiple graphical and audio issues, Star Trek Resurgence is worth checking out. The experience of the former Telltale employees shows in Dramatic Labs. Somehow, the engine is just as buggy, but the gripping storyline and characters shine bright. It's also cool how dedicated the studio is to recreating the gadgets from this Star Trek era. If you're a Trekkie or a casual fan, you should give this game a go.

Amnesia The Bunker is slightly delayed to June 6 https://www.destructoid.com/amnesia-the-bunker-is-slightly-delayed-to-june-6/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=amnesia-the-bunker-is-slightly-delayed-to-june-6 https://www.destructoid.com/amnesia-the-bunker-is-slightly-delayed-to-june-6/#respond Mon, 15 May 2023 16:00:42 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=379191 Amnesia The Bunker delay

There's another delay but at least it's short

The upcoming horror game Amnesia The Bunker has bee delayed once again. In a social media video Friday, the game's creative lead Fredrik Olsson confirmed that the title will now release on June 6. It's just two weeks, but this comes only days before its initial release time on May 16. Olsson explained the reason why there's an Amnesia The Bunker delay.

Rare crashes plague Amnesia The Bunker

As Amnesia The Bunker has been going through the certification process, Olsson claimed on Twitter that they've found "multiple, rare crashes that are very difficult to identify, reproduce, and thereby also fix." Olsson notes that they could've had the team work during weekends to make the release date, but he said that is not something they choose to do at the studio.

"Everything's coming together so nicely," Olsson said to fans. "We have the gameplay, the art, the animations, the atmosphere, the narrative, everything is coming together, and we are really ready to ship this out to the world."

https://youtu.be/jvUV3Hh6b0g

Amnesia The Bunker's original release window was March 2023. The first delay pushed it to May 16, but with this announcement, the horror title will now creep into fans' homes on June 6. When it does arrive, players will be taken through a haunted bunker from World War 1. You're playing as a soldier that's been cut off from his battalion and has to face this creepy environment alone.

Olsson also confirmed that an Amnesia The Bunker demo will be released on Steam. No official demo release date is out, but the creative lead did say to keep an eye out for the timing.

Hopefully, this Amnesia The Bunker delay will be the last as it approaches its release on June 6. It will be released on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. This may give you enough time to finish the Resident Evil 4 remake (or replay it on another difficulty).

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 prequel comic: How it connects to the games https://www.destructoid.com/marvels-spider-man-2-prequel-comic-how-it-connects-to-the-games/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=marvels-spider-man-2-prequel-comic-how-it-connects-to-the-games https://www.destructoid.com/marvels-spider-man-2-prequel-comic-how-it-connects-to-the-games/#respond Sat, 13 May 2023 19:00:56 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=378766 Marvel's Spider-Man 2 prequel comic

A glimpse into what's to come

It's not often that we get an insight into a sequel's storyline before it releases. Thankfully, we have the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 prequel comic written by Christos Gage with art by Ig Guara. This comic will provide clues on which characters we'll see, and some of the story beats we could witness play out in the highly anticipated game. Here's a wrap-up of everything that happens in the Free Comic Book Day Marvel's Spider-Man 2 prequel comic.

An interview with J. Jonah Jameson

[caption id="attachment_378956" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Marvel's Spider-Man 2 J Jonah Jameson Screenshot via Marvel Comics website[/caption]

The comic first propels us into J. Jonah Jameson's studio with M.J. Watson getting interviewed by the loon. Just like the last game, Jameson is hosting a controversial podcast called Just The Facts. M.J. Watson is seemingly there to promote her book Perilous: A Journey into War Torn Symkaria. In the comics, this nation has warred against Wakanda and Dr. Doom has been the leader of Symkaria in the past after invading it. Perhaps, this will be a subplot within Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Nevertheless, Symkaria seems to be the place where Peter Parker and M.J. went on a trip to, during the events of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

As you'd expect from J. Jonah Jameson, he ridicules M.J. for the poor sales of the book and is sexist towards her. She doesn't take his comments lightly and almost immediately leaves the room. But, both Spider-Men are suddenly tackled through the glass in the room where the journalists sit. The villain Tarantula is attacking them, wanting to restore his honor from his first defeat by killing the duo.

How the characters have grown since the last adventure

[caption id="attachment_378965" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Miles Morales Screenshot via Marvel Comics website[/caption]

Both Peter and Miles are able to dispatch the villain quickly and swing out of the studio. It seems to be the summer as Peter is cooking with a BBQ. Mary Jane believes that Peter took the fight to Jameson's studio to stop the interview in its tracks. If so, that seems a bit reckless on Peter's part. Peter, since the first game, has worked hard for a Teacher's Certificate, but he hasn't been able to find paying work in a short time.

He's living at Aunt May's house, but since her death, he's had to pay the mortgage on the building and he's struggling to keep up with it. However, he says he can't sell it. "It's all I have left of May and Uncle Ben," he states. They then discuss the idea of M.J. moving in, but she wants to stay close to the city for work.

Miles interrupts the awkward conversation. He hasn't been performing hero work for a while as he says he's "just rusty." The youngster is also considering college and what to major in science or music. While he's been pondering that topic, Miles says he's upgraded the lures that distract Peter's foes. However, he needs a quick trip to the electronics store. As they arrive, they notice car thieves. They attack them, but they claim they're under a gang under the control of The Hood, a known villain in the comics.

They turn invisible, but M.J. outsmarts them by throwing paint to reveal their location. Despite getting defeated and unconscious, they somehow vanish without a trace after the police apprehend them.

A possible inclusion of Dr. Strange?

After finding these thugs again in a jewelry store, they catch them within webs. The cloaking tech has been created by Phin Mason (otherwise known as the Tinkerer, the antagonist from Spider-Man: Miles Morales) and was stolen by The Hood's goons. As the comic proceeds, we hear that The Hood is some kind of mage in the eyes of his minions and victims. With the Sanctum Sanctorum being present in the first game, perhaps Spider-Man will meet Dr. Strange for his magical know-how. That is just speculation, however.

Nevertheless, The Hood is trying to find a magical artifact, and it's apparently heading to New York. Later on, we find out this object's called the Lifeline Tablet, which can cure disease and raise the dead, according to the antagonist. This could be an important element in the narrative of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 as both Miles and Peter are suffering from the loss of their loved ones.

A conflict between Peter and M.J.

[caption id="attachment_378969" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Peter and MJ arguing Screenshot via Marvel Comics website[/caption]

M.J. not moving in with Peter is affecting him. As he's busting up bad guys, he says "If I'm honest, it shook me when you said you wouldn't move in with me." This argument may spill over to the full game. As Peter and Miles search for The Hood, there's a funny element in their conversation, in which he's calling the older Spider-Man a boomer. Maybe we'll see that continue in Marvel's Spider-Man 2

As both Spider-Men approach The Hood, they realize that he's trying to save his elderly mother. She tells The Hood to stop and let her go as she's dying of age on a bed. Despite this, The Hood tries to cast a spell with the Lifeline Tablet. It relishes in a mystical blue light, but no effect has been made on the elderly relative.  He goes on to fight both of the Spider-Men as he ponders if he needs blood for what he's trying to do. He eventually gives up but briefly blames both of the Spider-Men for ruining the ritual he was performing. Is this foreshadowing?

The conclusion

Both Peter and M.J. reconcile their issues, and Miles says he's going to major in Music Technology, "the best of both worlds" with science and music. J. Jonah Jameson at the end of the comic decides to sell the Fact Channel podcast network he's brought up and buy the Daily Bugle newspaper. We'll likely see headlines defaming both of the Spider-Men during their adventures in the sequel.

I just can't wait once we set sail! It will be great!

Fortnite is a bustling home for creativity after the Creative 2.0 tools were released, and a Kingdom Hearts fan has actually recreated Destiny Islands in the game for others to enjoy. In a video posted by HiddenxRoxas on Twitter Monday, the Destiny Islands area was showcased within Fortnite, and the video has been watched by over 60,000 people. It's still a work-in-progress by creator iamintehmafia, but some key elements of the introductory world are replicated very well with the Unreal Engine.

Our hearts led us here with a guiding key

[caption id="attachment_378730" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Sora and Kairi Fortnite Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

If you use the Island code 3604-1677-0449, you'll be dropped into the small world of Destiny Islands in Fortnite. You're placed where Sora first wakes up in the original Kingdom HeartsYou'll see the waves rushing into the sand, the crooked palm trees, and the charming wooden bridge that takes you to an offshore area. The waterfall and rooms around the higher sections of the map are also around this user-generated location. You'll also notice the HP and MP meters from Kingdom Hearts on the bottom right

The main aim of this island is to collect all the coins around the area. It's an easy task, but this place is more about exploration than anything else. On the offshore island, you can actually see Sora and Kairi sitting on a tree gazing at the ocean view. It calls to mind the sad Kingdom Hearts 3 ending when Sora is taken to Quadratum.

Can you see the cave from Kingdom Hearts' Destiny Islands in Fortnite?

[caption id="attachment_378731" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Destiny Islands Sora drawing Fortnite Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

As you collect more coins, a path will open up, revealing the cave where the keyhole lies. You'll see Sora's cute drawing of him and Kairi sharing a paopu fruit, and an Organization member. If you accept the darkness that he offers, the world furthers into the night, and creatures begin to attack you. Unfortunately, a keyblade doesn't come to your hand, but as it's a work-in-progress, perhaps more elements will be introduced later.

There is no music to be had in this Destiny Islands recreation as of yet, so I recommend playing a version of it in the background. Kingdom Hearts characters are currently not in the game, but there have been hints that Sora could join Fortnite with a survey from Epic Games showing interest, according to FN News.

A future after Zelda

After many adventures with Link in May, there will come a day in which we want to play something outside of Hyrule. These June 2023 games take us to street fighting events, a high-fantasy world, and a bandicoot looking for wumpa fruit. The summer month is also delivering an astounding number of promising indies. Here are the most anticipated June 2023 games to keep an eye on.

Crash Team Rumble (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S)

Trailer

The Bandicoot is back, but this time it's not a single-player platformer. Instead, it's a competitive party game that has you racking up wumpa fruit and attacking other players around the world. It's quite the far cry from past games in the series, but you'll still be jumping and spinning to win. Like a game of Rocket Leagueyou're both attacking and defending the goal. Playing as the heroes or the villains of the series, each character has their own unique ability to offer on the battlefield. As you try to master these abilities, you're also trying to capture key areas of the map. Hopefully, this game will grab an audience, despite not being free-to-play.

Diablo IV (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

The action RPG juggernaut series Diablo is coming back on June 6. Diablo IV is bringing its exciting combat to consoles and PC with five different classes at your disposal. It has the Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, and Sorcerer. Diablo IV is also elevating its storytelling with close-up cutscenes, outstanding voice acting, and grand fantasy theming throughout. That's good because the dull storyline was one of Diablo III's worst elements. While experiencing the narrative, you'll also get rewarding loot, like weapons and armor, throughout your journey. Hopefully, Diablo IV launches better than its predecessor and will let players log in quickly out of the gate.

Final Fantasy XVI (PS5)

Trailer

Another heavy hitter in the RPG space, Final Fantasy XVI, is heading to PS5 systems on June 22. This console exclusive sets players in a dark, yet beautiful fantasy world, seemingly inspired by Game of Thrones. Powerful monsters called Eikons are controlled by dominants (human owners), and the fate of the world is decided by their actions. You play as Clive Rosfield, who is protecting his brother, the dominant of the Phoenix. Through a series of unfortunate events, Clive swears revenge on Ifrit and goes on an epic adventure across Valisthea. For those who hate turn-based combat, you should be happy to know this is an action RPG through and through. The battle system is actually directed by Devil May Cry and Dragon's Dogma veteran Ryota Suzuki. This is quite possibly the standout from the June 2023 games lineup.

Master Detective Archives: Rain Code (Switch)

Miss the crime-solving adventures of Phoenix Wright and L.A. Noire, but want a big anime twist? Master Detective Archives: Rain Code is stepping into those shoes on the Nintendo Switch. From the developer behind Dangonronpa, players will be looking for clues as they attempt to figure out the truth behind unsolved cases. Part of the detective process is going through the Mystery Labyrinth, spotting inconsistencies, and taking part in action scenes. The art style is as imaginative as you'd expect from those who have experience from the Dangonronpa series as you explore the town and speak to witnesses on the case.

Street Fighter 6 (PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Trailer

The beloved Street Fighter series is taking its next step with a sixth entry. Featuring full crossplay and rollback netcode, Street Fighter 6 has exciting fighting gameplay to offer up fans on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The graphics look outstanding, with plenty of battle effects and gorgeous scenery to gaze at. For example, a new character named Kimberly uses spray bottles, and the colorful visuals really pop on-screen. Street Fighter 6 will also feature a new single-player mode called World Tour that features a character creator and open environments to explore and train your skills with the very best. The gameplay seems to be advanced as well, with the addition of the drive system and perfect specials. If you can't wait until June 2 to play the game, there's a free demo you can check out.

A Legend of Zelda fighting game is long overdue https://www.destructoid.com/legend-of-zelda-fighting-game-is-long-overdue/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=legend-of-zelda-fighting-game-is-long-overdue https://www.destructoid.com/legend-of-zelda-fighting-game-is-long-overdue/#respond Tue, 09 May 2023 17:00:21 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=377765 The Legend of Zelda fighting game

Swords will clash

Some major gaming franchises have incredible fighting games attached to them. Pokemon has Pokken, Persona has Persona 4 Arena, and Final Fantasy has the fast-paced Dissidia series. It's about time that The Legend of Zelda gets the same treatment after multiple decades of successful games. Here's why a Legend of Zelda fighting game would work so well.

Link's fighting game appearances

https://youtu.be/sU6nrVEexAg

Before we get stuck into what a Legend of Zelda fighting game would be, let's explore Link's history in the genre. During the GameCube era, the Hero of Time appeared as a playable character in SoulCalibur II. It excites many fans still to this day, due to his expansive move set like his swings of the powerful Master Sword, the throttle of his arrows, and the use of his bombs. His entrance into the fighting space felt so natural, and Bandai Namco pulled a faithful recreation of Link into a 3D fighter. It begins to prove that a Legend of Zelda fighting game could work.

Of course, that's not Link's only fighting game appearance. He is a strong fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series as well. The game's even more faithful to the character in Smash, as he spins his sword in place, throws bombs, and uses his chain whip to get back to safety. Zelda, Sheik, Young Link, Toon Link, and of course, Ganondorf also have strong move sets from Smash that could be adapted into a Legend of Zelda fighting game like SoulCalibur.

What would a Legend of Zelda fighting game be like?

[caption id="attachment_377782" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Legend of Zelda fighting game Image via Nintendo[/caption]

With the help of Bandai Namco (who developed Pokken Tournament and worked on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate), Nintendo could create an epic weapons-based fighter based on The Legend of Zelda.

You can have memorable fighters like Ganondorf going against the likes of Mipha, Zant, or the evil wizard Agahnim. There's so much history that Bandai Namco could source from. You can take characters from all over the series, such as Link like his wolf form from Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword's creepy Ghirahim, and the lesser-known Captain Linebeck. You could go wild with the picks also, like the infamous Tingle as a joke character.

As Hyrule Warriors has proven, it wouldn't be strange to see all of these Zelda characters meet each other, despite the timeline they come from. You could also have a central story focused on defeating a new antagonist in the games that pit friends against each other in combat. If Nintendo isn't cool with that idea, you can also make the enemies shadow versions of the playable characters, similar to Persona 4 Arena.

There are many locales where battles could take place. Skyward Sword's Skyloft could have you fall off the edge into the sky below if you're not careful. Ocarina of Time's Gerudo Valley would pit fighters on the shaky wooden bridge. Hyrule Field could be a flat stage, similar to Tekken 5's Moonlit Wilderness or Tekken 7's Infinite Azure. Bandai Namco or Nintendo could get very creative with the many locales they've created for the games ever since the NES era. The adaptations on modern hardware would also look beautiful, especially if this is on Nintendo's next console after the Switch.

The engaging movesets

[caption id="attachment_377783" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Legend of Zelda Daruk Image via Nintendo[/caption]

The Legend of Zelda has an incredible cast of characters that a studio like Bandai Namco could pull from. Link would be the lead hero that beginner players could gravitate towards. However, other fighters such as Sheik would be much faster to control with quick knife attacks and wall-jumping abilities. You could even have a character like Young Link from Majora's Mask be the Yoshimitsu of the game, switching between masks and being unpredictable with his moves.

The Goron Champion Daruk from Breath of the Wild, for example, could be a heavy type with his huge Boulder Breaker weapon. He'd be slow but if he hits his opponent, there'd be massive damage involved. There's so much potential within the last 35 years or so of The Legend of Zelda history for intriguing move sets.

Don't get me started about the music

Koji Kondo's music over the years has delighted many fans, and a Legend of Zelda fighting game can take advantage of that. Just like Cadence of Hyrulewe could have entertaining remixes based on classic tracks. "Song of Storms" could be turned up to 11 with a dramatic orchestral flair. Ocarina of Time's boss battle music could be elevated with an electronic alteration. It would also be interesting to see calm themes from Lost Woods, for example, be turned into fighting game music. The composer could go in all kinds of directions with the wonderful music by Kondo.

Though it has Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Switch still frequently misses out on newer fighting games like Street Fighter 6 and Guilty Gear Strive. But there's a lot of potential within the land of Hyrule for a new competitive fighting game like this.

10 of the best single player games you can play on a PS5 right now https://www.destructoid.com/10-of-the-best-single-player-games-you-can-play-on-a-ps5-right-now/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=10-of-the-best-single-player-games-you-can-play-on-a-ps5-right-now https://www.destructoid.com/10-of-the-best-single-player-games-you-can-play-on-a-ps5-right-now/#respond Sun, 07 May 2023 18:30:34 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=376376 Best PS5 single player games

The best PS5 single-player stories and experiences

The best PS5 single-player games make the platform one of the greatest consoles to own today. With exclusives like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and God of War Ragnarok, there are many outstanding experiences on the beloved system. While it's sad that some double-A exclusives like Gravity Rush 2 and LittleBigPlanet 3 have fizzled from PlayStation's priority list, there are still grand single-player campaigns that will take your breath away. Here are 10 of the best PS5 single-player games you can check out.

Marvel’s Spider-Man series

[caption id="attachment_377150" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Marvel's Spider-Man PS5 Image via PlayStation[/caption]

If you're a big comic book fan or just like action games in general, you can't go wrong with Marvel's Spider-Man series from Insomniac Games. Web slinging feels the best it's ever been, evolving the system from the beloved Spider-Man 2 PS2 game and letting you do tricks in the air. Boss battles are immensely important and truly up the stakes of the storyline. Finally, this Marvel version of New York is so detailed as you're beating up foes across the stunning map with a glorious battle system. The follow-up based on Miles Morales is also stellar, perhaps outdoing the original game, with an elevated battle system and intense, drama-filled story. Now's a good time to get into the series as Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered is getting a standalone release on PS5.

God of War series

[caption id="attachment_377151" align="alignnone" width="1200"]God of War Ragnarok Best PS5 single player games Image via PlayStation[/caption]

If you love single-player games on PS5, you owe it to yourself to play the Norse God of War series. I personally found the PS2 and PS3 entries hard to get into. The action gets repetitive, there are oddly placed puzzles, and the harsh overtones of Kratos' personality repelled me. However, this new reboot-quel with Kratos as a father is a game changer. The way Kratos evolves past his violent origins and grows as a person is refreshing. Both of these games act as a fantastic coming-of-age story for his son Atreus as well. The combat takes a slower, more methodical third-person approach. The axe feels satisfying to wield, and the powers Kratos attains over the course of the series make you feel strong. There are plenty of cinematic bosses that amaze you too.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

[caption id="attachment_377154" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart Image via PlayStation[/caption]

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart hosts some of the best PS5 graphics, bar none. Reviewers often say this series looks like a Pixar film for a good reason, and I agree. But it's not just a tour-de-force of graphics, however. This sci-fi game features two engaging platforming heroes trying to save the multiverse from Dr. Nefarious and company. Most of the guns on offer pack a punch, like the Shatterbomb, while other weapons turn your enemies into cute objects like pixels with the Pixelizer. The storyline is also impactful and gets surprisingly emotional.

The Last of Us Part I

[caption id="attachment_377155" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Last of Us Part 1 Best PS5 single player games Image via PlayStation[/caption]

Talking about emotional stories, The Last of Us Part I will leave you weeping. This post-apocalyptic has you play as Joel, a father who lost their child, and connects with a girl named Ellie as they face the harsh zombie-filled environment. Yes, they're called the Infected (not zombies, per se), but what makes them unique is how they have to listen to the environment to know where you are. It gets creepy as you have to slowly work your way through dark hallways to succeed. Otherwise, they'll come rampaging toward you, and you need your wits to shoot them in the correct spots. What's even scarier, perhaps, are the people you meet along the way, and the storyline gets very heavy as Joel and Ellie try to keep themselves alive. It's one of the best PS5 single-player games because of how intense it gets. I haven't even gotten into the impressive graphics, either.

Elden Ring

[caption id="attachment_377156" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Elden Ring Best PS5 single player games Image via Bandai Namco[/caption]

Elden Ring is a tough S.O.B., but the grind is well worth your time as you defeat tough bosses with a big smile on your face and scale across a dangerous fantasy landscape. I've personally never connected with a Souls game, but for some reason, Elden Ring grabbed me. The open world allows you to explore, challenge other bosses, and level up at your own speed. You can find mysterious areas naturally, get awesome loot, and then attempt to defeat a tough boss once more. That game loop is absolutely engrossing and far better than the linear Souls style as you finally have options. You're not stuck with one boss over and over and over again. The world-building is also a strength of the game, with gorgeous scenery and architecture to gaze at.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

[caption id="attachment_377157" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy PS5 Image via Eidos Interactive[/caption]

I'll say it. This game is better than the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The characters are written so well and are different enough from the Hollywood versions. There's a fantastic character arc for Eidos Montreal's interpretation of Starlord, and you truly feel the connection between all of the members of the group. The script is also quite funny. The third-person shooting gameplay is thrilling as you're zooming around foes with your jet boots and instructing the squad on what to do. Bosses also feel like a big deal in this game.

Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade

[caption id="attachment_377162" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade Image via Square Enix[/caption]

If you need an RPG to play on your PS5, Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade is ready for you. With spectacular visuals, fast-paced yet strategic combat, and an engrossing storyline, this game will grab you from beginning to end. The music is also phenomenal. The Intergrade edition comes with a chapter that introduces Yuffie into the mix that you can't play on the PS4.

Astro’s Playroom

[caption id="attachment_377165" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Astro's Playroom Best PS5 single player games Image via PlayStation[/caption]

Want a game that the kids (or your inner child) can play? Astro's Playroom is a wonderful pick. It fully uses the DualSense controller's functionality, such as the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, to make a memorable experience. The platforming is some of the best the PS5 has to offer, as well. Additionally, it references great moments in PlayStation's long history. The best part is that Astro's Playroom is free to download!

Resident Evil 4 Remake

[caption id="attachment_377167" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Resident Evil 4 Remake Best PS5 single player games Image via Capcom[/caption]

This is an almost perfect horror game. Stunning graphics, a creepy environment, an epic story, tough bosses, and stellar third-person shooting gameplay. The puzzles are also a treat in Resident Evil 4 Remake. There's not much else to say other than pick this game up.

Horizon series

[caption id="attachment_377550" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Horizon Forbidden West PS5 single player games Image via PlayStation[/caption]

While the sequel, Forbidden West, covers familiar ground in terms of its gameplay, it's still a tour-de-force of graphics. The unique robot-filled post-apocalyptic setting is striking. You also have some stellar performances by Ashley Burch (Aloy) and the rest of the cast. The storyline is also intriguing as we learn bits and pieces about why our civilization failed many years ago. Horizon: Zero Dawn is an incredible open-world game as you upgrade your gear and defeat titanic robots along the way, strategically breaking their parts until they fall. Forbidden West is still impressive, but to me, fails to capture my interest as much as the original.

Honorable Mentions

There are some other stand-out titles that didn't quite make the Best PS5 single-player games list. One of them that is likely mentioned in the comments is Ghost of Tsushima. It presents a gorgeous open world inspired by the Mongolian invasion era of Japan. However, it strikes me more as a PS4 game rather than a PS5-specific entry for this list. It has received a remaster with additional content set on Iki Island. Additionally, there's Returnal. It's gained a large fanbase since its release, but can arguably be considered a co-op game, following one of its post-game updates.

Running around at the speed of sound!

The quality of The Blue Blur's games might be hit or miss, but one thing that's consistent with the Sonic the Hedgehog series is its outstanding music. Some of the best Sonic songs excite us as blast through each stage at supersonic speed, battle bosses, and gaze at the wonderful visuals surrounding the hedgehog.

From fully vocal tracks like "Escape from the City" to the nostalgic 16-bit themes of "Green Hill Zone," there are practically hundreds of compositions to choose from for this list. And so, chili dog in hand, let's listen to the 10 best Sonic songs in the series' history.

NOTE: These Spotify embeds can be loud! You may want to turn down the volume before hittig play.

10. "Fly in the Freedom" - Sonic Adventure 2

https://open.spotify.com/track/5axenkAeQSXtrKnCvzQOHG?si=3f05367bd6284c2f

I love jazz, and "Fly In The Freedom" is a fantastic theme. Acting as Rouge's character theme, this catchy composition has stunning vocals, a riveting bassline, and an exciting brass section during its middle section. The vibes provided by this piece remind me of Jamiroquai's wonderfully chill '00s tracks like "Virtual Insanity" and "Seven Days In Sunny June." Regardless, the lyrics and overall tone of the track fit the character of Rouge well in Sonic Adventure 2

9. "Reach for the Stars" - Sonic Colors

https://open.spotify.com/track/7apcnerZJaEWx3zJNLhWGt?si=066bb35db526477f

"Reach for the Stars" is pure excitement jarred into a song. Whenever you hear this track, you're hyped to play the game. The drum roll encapsulates Sonic's speed, while the playful guitar keeps the song moving forward. The lyrics are uplifting, as Sonic is "not looking back, not giving up, not letting go, and [keeps] on running." If you ever go to a Sonic the Hedgehog concert, every fan would know the lyrics to this track; that's how beloved it is.

8. "Seaside Hill" - Sonic Heroes

https://open.spotify.com/track/05NzLMpI9QMGjSqaE5vUHj?si=709cb185a3aa42c9

Some of the best Sonic songs are purely instrumental pieces, and that is the case with Sonic Heroes' "Seaside Hill." It sounds like a peppy rock anthem with electrifying guitar solos and tasty bass in the background. The drums are also a notable highlight, with the track welcoming you to the game's first stage with its bright energy and upbeat tone.

7. "Endless Possibility" - Sonic Unleashed

https://open.spotify.com/track/6zDCeXPbNqgK5oTpQ6OZfy?si=defff3d89b8b426c

Sonic Unleashed was a new exciting step for the series because of the "Boost" formula. This song helped push this game into the stratosphere with the Sonic fanbase. Its charming lyrics, rocky melody, and overall melody are such a delight to listen to.

This live version, taken from the 30th-anniversary celebration, also includes full orchestral backing, which makes the song even more epic. I love the guitar solo peaking as the track reaches its final minute. I blast this song whenever I feel down in the dumps because it reminds me there are all sorts of possibilities out there in the world.

"I feel so free," is the vibe captured after listening to "Endless Possibility."

6. "Chemical Plant Zone (Act 1)" - Sonic The Hedgehog 2

https://open.spotify.com/track/4tfr03fY5utaTp4FJUcMui?si=5f1b7b27c1554806

I'm sorry in advance, as this Sonic the Hedgehog 2 song will now be stuck in your head for hours, if not days. This jazzy 16-bit piece has so much personality with its horn tones, satisfying deep rhythms, and '90s AF synth drumming. Like so many of Sonic's 16-bit soundtracks, Chemical Plant Zone is a blast from the past and will have you bopping your head to and fro whenever you hear it.

5. "Live & Learn" - Sonic Adventure 2

https://open.spotify.com/track/12xJWY5Dx0OIIZjKTa1UMK?si=2f89791246c94ea1

OH YEAH! Here we go. That guitar riff at the beginning instantly gets you hyped. Just like "Seaside Hill" from Sonic Heroes, the guitar and bass in "Live & Learn" are a phenomenal marriage, and the awesome drums are the Best Man/Woman/Person. They play off each other so well. The vocals have an awesome growl to them as well, giving "Live & Learn" an almost metal edge.

4. "Lights, Camera, Action! - Studiopolis Zone (Act 1)" Sonic Mania

https://open.spotify.com/track/4aKkhZmKHRqW1mYKI0VTtC?si=7696e7b640724425

It's hard to replicate the classics, but somehow Tee Lopes more than nailed the sound font and atmosphere that the original Sonic the Hedgehog games established, when they composed Sonic ManiaThis piece, from Studiopolis boasts an exciting and entertaining melody, with 16-bit style background bass, and some stirring piano. You really get that vibe of glitz and glamour of the zone within the music, as well as some tasty jazz segments.

3. "Spring Yard Zone (Act 1)" - Sonic the Hedgehog

https://open.spotify.com/track/2fOo4HqrkJ2bkZ8iSahXlW?si=a0e6eab4c43f43c0

Jazz music and Sonic the Hedgehog are like curry and fries. You wouldn't think they'd work together, but man, they're simply amazing as a duo. This piece is an absolute jam with a memorable orchestration of the 16-bit sound font.

The "deeper" sound that's often criticized from the Sega Genesis is actually a plus here, providing much character to the song. The major part of the melody is intriguing, featuring a triangle-like chimes that sounds similar to collecting one of the in-game rings. The sparkling nature of the track reflects Spring Yard's "amusement park" vibe, and has ensured it a place in the playlist of many of Sonic fan.

2. "Escape from the City" - Sonic Adventure 2

https://open.spotify.com/track/5nTgzOZGI5zfhUvhXPIrtg?si=c6fa2335e15849eb

Composers Ted Poley and Tony Harnell completely nailed this track, and it's one of the best Sonic songs, period. As Sonic rides a skateboard down the San Francisco-like city with "places to go," this track exudes that '00s punk vibe perfectly. The lyrics are catchy, the instrumentals from the drums and guitar are glorious, and there's even a neat reference to another track ("Live & Learn") in the song.

The singer's vocals are dynamic and excitable, just like Sonic himself, whenever action and danger beckons. This iconic track is not only a great theme for Sonic Adventure 2, but also a trademark identity piece for The Blue Blue himself.

1. "Green Hill Zone (Act 1)" - Sonic The Hedgehog

https://open.spotify.com/track/2ZbJuTlSK9TYokeza42cmR?si=f400b58ca0394a64

This is the song that introduced me to video games. I remember vividly listening to this music, seeing the bright green grass and shimmering blue visuals from the waterfalls of Green Hill Zone. I was enamored by the world on screen. You have my uncle to blame for my interest in gaming ever since. 31 years after the game's release, however, it still strikes a chord with practically every single video game fan around the world.

The composition is gorgeous with wonderful higher-pitched instruments matched with the deep, deep notes of the percussion. The transitions between each major part of the song are also striking as it constantly changes your expectations of what a 16-bit song can be like. This track is like a warm hug from my childhood. It's one of the best Sonic songs ever, instantly recognizable from generation to generation

10 Disney locations that would fit perfectly in Disney Speedstorm https://www.destructoid.com/10-disney-locations-that-would-fit-perfectly-in-disney-speedstorm/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=10-disney-locations-that-would-fit-perfectly-in-disney-speedstorm https://www.destructoid.com/10-disney-locations-that-would-fit-perfectly-in-disney-speedstorm/#respond Sun, 30 Apr 2023 17:00:31 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=375160 Disney Speedstorm tracks wishlist

Many magical worlds to draw from

The wonderful world of Disney has many different locations throughout a century of history, and some memorable Disney Speedstorm tracks that can be made from them. We already have the legendary Steamboat Willie cartoon, Hercules' Olympus, and Mulan's China included in the kart racer. However, there are many other films that developer Gameloft can draw from. Here are some amazing Disney locations that would fit as perfect Disney Speedstorm tracks.

101 Dalmatians - London

[caption id="attachment_376403" align="alignnone" width="1200"]101 Dalmatians London Screenshot via Walt Disney Studios' YouTube Channel[/caption]

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has already proved London can be a spectacular location for a track, so it would be great to see Disney Speedstorm's take on it. You can have the bustling city become an obstacle itself with double-decker buses and black London cabs in the way. With a watercolor art style over the city's landscape, it could really pop as you gaze at the red phone boxes, Buckingham Palace, and, of course, Elizabeth Tower (commonly but incorrectly known as Big Ben, which is actually the bell inside). You could also see the Dalmatians scurrying down the sidewalks as Cruella De Vil's henchmen chase after them. There's a lot you could do with this British city as your inspiration.

Aladdin - Agrabah

[caption id="attachment_376346" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Agrabah Disney Speedstorm Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

The beautiful city of Agrabah would look fantastic in Disney Speedstorm as a track. You could have our favorite Disney characters toiling through the sand, jumping on bumpy desert land, and then sweeping into the busy market streets of the city. The glorious palace would gleam in the sunlight. It would likely look much better than the above picture from Kingdom HeartsThe music of this track could be amazing too with electronic remixes of "One Jump Ahead," "Prince Ali," and "A Whole New World."

Cars - Radiator Springs

[caption id="attachment_376350" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Radiator Springs Disney Speedstorm Screenshot via Pixar Cars' YouTube Channel[/caption]

It's astonishing that neither a Radiator Springs track nor a Cars character is featured in Disney Speedstorm. It makes so much sense. Going down the main street of Radiator Springs would be a thrill for fans of the series as you see the Route 66 town come to life. There's also the drift-heavy side track that Lightning trains at in the original film. You'll learn quickly you have to drift right to go left, to reference the film. The mountainous setting would look stunning to players, making it one of the best Disney Speedstorm tracks you could think of.

Coco - Land of the Dead

[caption id="attachment_375974" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Coco Land of the Dead Image via Disney[/caption]

Coco's Land of the Dead would make for a stunning Disney Speedstorm track. You have gorgeous Mexican imagery and architecture to draw from. This would be a rare track that's set during the night, making the colorful lighting truly stand out. You could even form it up like Mario Kart's Rainbow Road, in which you can see the beautiful scenery from a bird's eye view. The music would be a no-brainer with spirited Mexican-influenced music from the film and the culture itself.

Disney World

[caption id="attachment_376351" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Disney World Disney Speedstorm Image by stinne24 from Pixabay[/caption]

One out-of-the-box Disney Speedstorm track would be Disney World itself. You could chase down Main Street USA, race around the wonderful Cinderella Castle, enter themed areas like the Haunted Mansion, and then work your way to the sci-fi area Tomorrowland. You could see references to the popular attractions of Disney World and emphasize the characters you see around the parks, like in Disneyland Adventures. We already have Figment in the character roster, so let's see his place of origin Disney World in the game.

Luca - Portorosso

[caption id="attachment_376336" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Luca Disney Speedstorm Image via Disney[/caption]

The film Luca is so pretty. The vibrant colors, the beautiful sea, and the attention to detail in Italian culture are brilliant. Driving through the narrow passages of Portorosso would be thrilling. Speeding through the farmlands would establish a new setting for Disney Speedstorm. Lastly, a beach section would transport us to the Italian Riviera.

Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs - The Woodlands

[caption id="attachment_376357" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Snow White and the Seven Dwarves Disney Speedstorm Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Walt Disney's first cartoon for his own company, Steamboat Willie, is a featured track in Disney Speedstorm, so it would only make sense to have Disney's first-ever feature film in the game as well. You'd encounter a grand forest with stumps as obstacles and scary trees around every corner. You'd see a more cheerful part of the area too with bright flowers and the cottage shown in the above picture from Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. I'm wondering what a remix of "Heigh-Ho" sounds like. "It's home from work you go," Gameloft.

Tangled - The Kingdom of Corona

[caption id="attachment_376360" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Tangled Disney Speedstorm Image via Disney and Square Enix[/caption]

This Disney Speedstorm tracks wishlist wouldn't be complete without Tangled's Kingdom of Corona. The film and its interpretation in Kingdom Hearts 3 is blissful. There are outstanding set pieces like Rapunzel's Tower and the magnificent royal castle within a busy, yet friendly town. Similar to Snow White's setting, there's a dense forest where you can set Disney Speedstorm's racing, and you could have ramp-like hills within the wilderness. Heck, you could even set the race around the iconic lantern scene in Tangled when Rapunzel and Flynn sang "I See The Light."

Toy Story - Andy's Room

[caption id="attachment_376362" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Andy's Room Disney Speedstorm Toy Story Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

A track based on Andy's room or perhaps his entire house would be one of the best Disney Speedstorm tracks. It could be deeply inspired by Hot Wheels Unleashed or if you want to go way back, Micro Machines. You'd be a small toy-sized kart in a human-sized room, avoiding marbles blocking your way or going over Hot Wheels loop-de-loops. There's a lot of inspiration Gameloft could take from Toy Story and the two games I just mentioned.

The Princess and the Frog - The Swamp

[caption id="attachment_376365" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Princess and the Frog Swamp Disney Speedstorm Screenshot via Disney Princess' YouTube Channel[/caption]

Speaking of gigantic environments, the Swamp from The Princess and the Frog would be one of the standout Disney Speedstorm tracks. Fireflies could light the pathway as you hop across leaves on ponds. Mama Odie's tree could be a centerpiece as you race your way around the water. It would be a unique setting that no other popular Disney property could deliver. Disney is building over the former Splash Mountain with a Princess and the Frog makeover, so maybe it will gain more fame. If that's the case, we could see Princess and the Frog in Disney Speedstorm.

Top 10 best songs from The Legend of Zelda series, ranked https://www.destructoid.com/top-10-best-songs-from-the-legend-of-zelda-series-ranked/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=top-10-best-songs-from-the-legend-of-zelda-series-ranked https://www.destructoid.com/top-10-best-songs-from-the-legend-of-zelda-series-ranked/#respond Sat, 29 Apr 2023 17:00:47 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=374935 Best The Legend of Zelda music

Best The Legend of Zelda music ever

The Legend of Zelda series has magnificent songs across its history. From the adventurous "Hyrule Field" theme to the beautiful "Zelda's Lullaby," composer Koji Kondo is behind some of the best video game music. While there are many, many tracks to choose from, these 10 songs establish why The Legend of Zelda series is a fantastic source of music. Yes, I know "Gerudo Valley" isn't in it, but there's only so much you can put in a Top 10 list! Here is the best The Legend of Zelda music.

10. Spirit Tracks - "Full Steam Ahead"

https://youtu.be/grsQM2rtjvk

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is one of the black sheep of the series on the DS. However, it has some of the best The Legend of Zelda music ever in its overworld theme. "Full Steam Ahead" plays while Link is driving a train. The song gives a rush of excitement. The tempo and percussion of the track remind me of a moving train's engine and pumping steam. The tambourine simulates the steam while the drums sound like the engine. There's also a neat reference to the main theme of The Legend of Zelda within the track. Aaron Grubb published a neat Western version of the song that you'd expect to hear from a game like Red Dead Redemption.

9. Breath of the Wild - The Blight Ganon themes

https://youtu.be/IjxEGwFiMR8

To me, the weakest part of The Legend of Zelda's soundtracks is the boss themes. They're great for the series' intense combat moments, but they don't stick in your head as much as the battle themes of franchises like Final Fantasy or Kingdom HeartsThe Blight Ganon music from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is different, however. Scattered across Hyrule are different Blight Ganons that represent alternate elements. The Waterblight is more energetic, while the Windblight is more personality-filled with the accordion from Kass' Theme mixed into it. The core battle theme across all four versions is also epic with menacing piano tones and a powerful choir. Vetrom, in the above video, does a great job of encompassing all of the elements from each Blight Ganon track into one solid remix.

8. Skyward Sword - "Skyloft"

https://youtu.be/oE8cU2HnGgI

The "Skyloft" theme in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is like a warm hug. It has a pleasant melody underscored by the fast strumming of a charming mandolin and the playing of a pretty horn instrument. The percussion is also lighter with a welcoming drum beat. This theme defines Skyloft as a place of sanctuary and somewhere players can cool down after the tough dungeons that lie on the surface of Hyrule. Patti Rudisill does a wonderful performance of Skyloft with a fitting Violin and Viola cover of the track.

7. A Link To The Past - "Dark World" / A Link Between Worlds - "Lorule"

https://youtu.be/XHfcPf1q2zs

The "Dark World" theme is another piece that helps establish that sense of adventure within you. The drumbeat compels you to keep going, while there's a thrilling melody in the forefront. The newer take on the song from A Link Between Worlds is stellar. The percussion is on point with a more charismatic, metallic drumbeat, while the main melody from the violin plays so well with the original 16-bit theme. The String Player Gamer has performed a brilliant symphonic metal violin cover of the track with a tasty solo towards the end of the song.

6. Twilight Princess - "Midna's Lament"

https://youtu.be/xyqL2Hsp-Vo

"Midna's Lament" is a striking piece from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. The piano piece is melancholy as Link tries to save his companion Midna from a horrible fate. The notes chosen for the song give off a mysterious vibe, and there's a reverberation effect that truly works for the strange atmosphere the piece is establishing. That vibe is then reinforced by a striking strings section in the middle of the track, possibly showing Link's strive to help Midna. The emotional core of "Midna's Lament" makes it one of the best The Legend of Zelda music pieces. Aaron Grubb once again brings a gorgeous Zelda cover, slowing down "Midna's Lament" and adding an effective echo to the piece.

5. Breath of the Wild - "Rito Village" / The Wind Waker - "Dragon Roost Island"

https://youtu.be/bCbDA9TR1p4

The core theme of The Wind Waker's "Dragon Roost Island" is present within Breath of the Wild's "Rito Village" and it works so well. There's a tranquil feel to the piece with the calm piano opening and then the piece rises with the strings until the chill mandolin takes over with the "Dragon Roost Island" theme.  Additionally, the woodwind instrument (I'm guessing the flute) stirs your heart as it blissfully plays the melody. This piece is composed so well and perfectly reflects Koji Kondo's creativity within his composing, making it some of the best The Legend of Zelda music. Nico Mendoza does a great job of interpreting the "Rito Village" theme for the acoustic and electric guitar. It also has a pristine violin pairing.

4. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - "Temple/Palace Theme"

https://youtu.be/qcac2Dh6Brg

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link isn't the most well-liked game in the series, but the "Temple Theme" is one of the highlights. In those early days of gaming, music was essential to establish the theme of the level, and this track nails it. The lower pitch of the 8-bit sound font establishes intrigue within the Temple as Link slashes his enemies and jumps to daring heights. The song then raises the stakes with a high-tempo section that keeps you on your toes while playing Zelda II. Many will know this track from Super Smash Bros. Melee's interpretation of the song, and it's fantastic. Lacey Johnson does a superb job of bringing that 8-bit flair with her keytar and adds a rock element that works so well with the composition.

3. The Legend of Zelda - "Main Theme"

https://youtu.be/txcCQOW0F4c

The Legend of Zelda's main theme across the series is still legendary. Remarkably scored in just one day by Koji Kondo (according to 1UP), this theme has a sense of grandeur. You're about to go on a big adventure, and the main title theme is momentous as the instruments build to a spectacle. The core melody gives the player excitement, even at 8-bit, as the piece takes twists and turns within the composition. The addition of the choir in future renditions from Nintendo is absolutely glorious as well. The Middle Ages does an intriguing take on the song with a version that features medieval instruments.

2. Ocarina of Time - "Hyrule Field"

https://youtu.be/ZtQsAScXDOU

Some of the best The Legend of Zelda music occurs when you have a theme that excites you. That is indeed the case with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's "Hyrule Field." Right out of the gate, this theme sweeps you off your feet as you venture into the grassy area with Epona. That march drum beat and brass inspire you to move forward as the melody is complemented with harp sounds and imaginative string sections. Mohmega delivers a powerful rock cover of the song that feels like it belongs in Hyrule Warriors.

1. Skyward Sword/Ocarina of Time - "Zelda's Lullaby"

https://youtu.be/zkNXYhSbDz8

You could argue that "Zelda's Lullaby" from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword could be the loveliest video game song ever. As the name implies, there's a soft melody that's played beautifully by the flutes, strings section, and harp. It truly places me at a sense of ease whenever I listen to it. Hopefully, we hear a new rendition of it in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Eliott Tordo does a unique, yet stunning cover of the song with the Erhu, also known as a Chinese violin.

They've got a friend in you

Sometimes you need a friend to succeed against the greatest foes. Just like Woody & Buzz in the Toy Story films, you can also have great companions in gaming.

They'll guide you to the next location, give your character moral support, or sometimes even support you in battle. Here are the best companions in gaming history, ranked.

10. Midna (The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess)

[caption id="attachment_374779" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Midna Twilight Princess best gaming companions Image via Nintendo[/caption]

The most memorable companion in The Legend of Zelda series is Midna. Her cheeky nature intrigues you as she gives a sly grin whenever you question her motives. That laugh is still in the back of my head too, even though I played Twilight Princess over a decade ago. Seriously, Nintendo, bring Twilight Princess HD to the Switch already.

She also helps Link turn into a wolf and take out foes in one fell swoop. Whenever the emotional track "Midna's Lament" plays, you also remember the moments in which the character is on the brink of death. You care about the character and want to make sure she's safe. That's a sign of a great companion.

9. Donald & Goofy (Kingdom Hearts)

[caption id="attachment_374913" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Donald and Goofy Kingdom Hearts Best gaming companions Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

As you'd expect from Mickey's best pals, Donald & Goofy are extremely loyal to Sora. They were tasked with following the key in the first game and have since grown a strong relationship with the keyblade wielder. Goofy surprisingly acts as the voice of reason in the group, giving the teenager advice, while Donald becomes the irrational-but-kind comedic relief. They're extremely helpful in the games, healing Sora whenever he's in trouble or teaming up for powerful attacks like Trinity Limit and Duck Flare, among others. They're even looking for their lost friend in the Kingdom Hearts IV reveal trailer within the darkness of Hades' Underworld.

8. Pey'j (Beyond Good & Evil)

[caption id="attachment_374915" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Beyond Good & Evil Pey'j Image via Ubisoft[/caption]

One of the best companions in gaming that very few have heard of is Pey'J. He's the uncle of the protagonist Jade in Beyond Good & Evil. He's a charming little pig that provides humor along the way as he encourages Jade to follow through on her plans. Without a father, Pey'J becomes that figure for her, providing valuable advice to the heroine. He's also a technical whiz, building elaborate boots that lift him off the ground and help Jade solve puzzles. Play Beyond Good & Evil and realize how cool Pey'j is in this game.

7. Sully (Uncharted series)

[caption id="attachment_374916" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Uncharted 4 Sully Screenshot via PlayStation's YouTube Channel[/caption]

Someone that's always been there for Nathan Drake through thick and thin is Sully from the Uncharted series. Seeing potential in the youngster, Sully practically raised him to become a treasure hunter from when Nate was a teenager. During Nate's adventures, Sully has hilarious banter with the protagonist as he keeps up with the death-defying platforming ahead, despite his age. He's very loyal and treats Nathan Drake like a son. Their relationship is very sweet, and this comradery makes Sully one of the best companions in gaming history.

6. Atreus (God of War series)

[caption id="attachment_374922" align="alignnone" width="1200"]God of War Atreus best companions in gaming Image via PlayStation[/caption]

The father-son relationship in the Norse-era God of War series is impeccable. Before Kratos teamed up with Atreus, he was ferocious, blunt, and, quite frankly, lacking in depth. However, as the relationship grew between Atreus and Kratos, the walls of his stoicism began to crumble. He finally began to care about the well-being of someone's safety, and it showed another side of the Greek god. It strengthens further in God of War: Ragnarok as Kratos learns to give his son more freedom and lets Atreus become who he wants to be. The natural progression of this father-son dynamic is astonishing and should be praised. Other than the story elements, Atreus is helpful with setting up attacks for his dad and can cause damage with his bow and arrows.

5. Kazooie (Banjo-Kazooie series)

[caption id="attachment_374925" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Banjo Kazooie Super Smash Bros Screenshot via Super Smash Bros' YouTube Channel[/caption]

There are few other platforming duos that are more iconic than Banjo and Kazooie. In the Nintendo 64 era, they were the bee's knees as Kazooie helped the bear climb tough hills and glide across Treasure Trove Cove. The speech between the characters is endearing, even though Kazooie can be irrational from time to time. They also appeared as an exciting duo character in the Super Smash Bros. series. Hopefully, one day, Microsoft will finally remake Banjo-Kazooie or even develop a new entry for the Xbox Series X and S. Let's cross our fingers.

4. Ellie (The Last of Us Part 1)

[caption id="attachment_374928" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Last of Us Part 1 Ellie Image via PlayStation[/caption]

There is a reason why Ellie is featured on the front of the cover rather than Joel. In The Last of Us Part 1she is a key component of why the game has connected to so many fans around the world. This companion, like Atreus, grows throughout the adventure as she begins to trust her father figure and is trusted to wield a gun to protect herself. Through her funny humor and sharp wit, Ellie is a great counterpart to Joel's furious nature. They work together as a duo so well, which makes the sequel devastating. By the end of the game, we truly believe how much Joel cares for Ellie due to the horrendous acts he pulls against the Fireflies to save her.

3. Clank (Ratchet & Clank series)

[caption id="attachment_374929" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Ratchet & Clank best companions in gaming Image via PlayStation[/caption]

Clank is a quirky robot that stands (or hangs on) by Ratchet's side (or back). With his goofy laugh, the robot offers funny remarks about Ratchet's adventures. The two play off each other well as Clank provides the brains of the operation, while Ratchet is the brave warrior taking out waves of enemies with his cavalcade of guns. Their friendship is believable, and both the lombax and the robot go out of their way to help each other. Sometimes, it's even to their detriment, as we see in Rift Apart

2. Tails (Sonic the Hedgehog series)

[caption id="attachment_374930" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Tails Sonic the Hedgehog Image via Sega[/caption]

Despite his young age, Tails is a genius inventor that helps Sonic in every way he can. Their friendship is endearing and has led them to many adventures, especially in the original Genesis/Mega Drive trilogy. One of the coolest moments is when Tails pilots the Tornado and escorts Sonic in Sky Chase Zone. In Sonic Heroes, he also helps Sonic and Knuckles fly through the air and land on the other side of hard-to-reach platforms. Sonic and Tails' friendship is like the hedgehog looking after a little brother; it's adorable. Tails is easily one of the best companions in gaming.

1. Luigi (Super Mario series)

[caption id="attachment_374932" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Luigi best companions in gaming Image via Nintendo[/caption]

Mario's longest companion and brother, Luigi, has always been by his side. As a fellow plumber, he has assisted Mario through many levels, fought goombas with his brother in the portable RPG series Mario & Luigi, and win tennis games as a duo. He was also successful in saving Mario in Luigi's Mansion, despite his huge fear of ghosts. While Mario and Luigi don't have the depth of Joel and Ellie's relationship, they are inseparable in the hearts and minds of many Nintendo fans around the world. Luigi's shy personality matches well with Mario's brave and upbeat quirks. It's evident from the movie adaptation of the series that Mario and Luigi are an amazing team in the final battle against Bowser.

Fun that doesn't break the bank

For some, the Nintendo Switch can be an expensive investment. Once you've purchased the console itself, there are additional Joy-Con controllers, the Nintendo Switch Online membership, and, of course, first-party titles like Super Mario Odyssey that almost never seem to go on sale, even years after their release.

Thankfully, there are some awesome games on this system that cost absolutely nothing to play and are most certainly worth your time and attention. Here are the 10 best free-to-play games on Nintendo Switch you can enjoy right now.

Dauntless

[caption id="attachment_373146" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Dauntless Switch Image via Phoenix Labs[/caption]

If you don’t have the money right now for an adventure title like Monster Hunter Rise, then Dauntless is another good, and similar, option. The action in this game gets pretty intense, as you take on beasts of all sizes, alone or with your friends. You’ll also be able to craft the armor and weapons you’d like from each monster you slay. Dauntless also offers cross-play between all platforms, unlike the Monster Hunter series, which gives this free-to-play option a leg up on the competition.

Deltarune

[caption id="attachment_373147" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Deltarune free Nintendo Switch games Image via Toby Fox[/caption]

Toby Fox’s follow-up from the Undertale series Deltarune is entirely free-to-play with no microtransactions in sight. The story is suitably entertaining, while Toby Fox maintains the much loved, oddly-natured lore of the Undertale world and characters. As you’d expect from the series, there is some stellar battle music and a unique pixel art style. If you’re a fan of Undertale, this is a must-play.

Fall Guys

[caption id="attachment_373148" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Fall Guys free Nintendo Switch games Image via Epic Games[/caption]

One of the most adorable free-to-play games you can play on the Nintendo Switch is Fall Guys. Against 59 other players, you’re competing to get the crown at the end of several mini-games. You’re going through tough obstacle courses with the silly physics of the game, scoring goals by heading a ball into the net or trying to outlast other players from disappearing platforms. It’s a lot of fun. I’ve only ever been able to get a crown once, but when I finally got it, I felt like a million Show-Bucks.

There are cosmetic items you may want to buy in Fall Guys, but the good thing is that they don’t affect the stats of any player.  This isn’t pay-to-win. Something to keep in mind is that developer Mediatonic organizes free events, giving you costumes for finishing tasks.

Fortnite

[caption id="attachment_373149" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Fortnite Battle Royale Image via Epic Games[/caption]

Some hate it, and others love it, but no matter where you stand you can’t deny that Fortnite is a smash success. Epic Games brings out compelling maps and guns that keep its fanbase entertained. The battle pass every season provides a lot of value, and the quests the developer provides are entertaining enough to keep you invested in the chaos of the game. I personally disliked the building elements of the original concept, but there is now a popular Zero Build mode that has consumed my gaming schedule.

Ninjala

[caption id="attachment_373150" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Ninjala Free Switch games Image via GungHo Online Entertainment[/caption]

Ninjala is almost as if Splatoon and Super Smash Bros. had a baby. Sporting adorable visuals, this multiplayer masher has you whacking each other with weapons, jumping from place to place with high energy, and mapping out every wildly creative stage. The music is also quite a highlight, similar to the Squid Kid series. Personally, I don't play this game due to its tendency for expensive microtransactions, but, from a gameplay standpoint it's an absolute delight, especially with friends.

Overwatch 2

[caption id="attachment_373313" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Overwatch 2 free to play Switch Image via Blizzard[/caption]

It's great that one of the very few big-budget FPS games on the Nintendo Switch is also free to play. This 5v5 hero shooter has all manner of characters with unique abilities and weapons to operate. Teaming up with your friends and forming strategies is so much fun within Overwatch 2's elaborate maps. Unfortunately, the skins are locked behind seasonal battle passes and microtransactions on the game's store, unlike its predecessor. One big positive, however, is that the series finally supports crossplay.

Pokemon Unite

[caption id="attachment_373314" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Pokemon Unite Free to play Image via Tencent[/caption]

Pokemon Unite is an absolute delight. It takes the MOBA mechanics of a game like League of Legends and places it into a thrilling 3v3 battle arena. The action is frenetic as you master each Pokemon's specific moves and work together to defeat the enemy team. The graphics are quite delightful, despite the game being available on both mobile and the Nintendo Switch. Like the previous entry on this list, there is also crossplay between those two platforms.

Something to keep in mind is that there are multiple microtransactions in the game. There are cosmetics such as costumes for your Pokemon and trainer, a battle pass, and other purchases that your wallet should be scared of. You can earn in-game rewards, however, through the free battle pass and performing well in Ranked.

Rocket League

[caption id="attachment_373315" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Rocket League Free Switch Image via Epic Games[/caption]

Rocket League is a simple concept that works so well on the Switch. You drive RC cars on a football/soccer pitch, flipping and turbo-boosting in order to score goals. If you need help as a beginner, on the other hand, you can enlist your friends from all platforms and still have fun on the field, There are car skins, antennas, rocket trails, and more to unlock through paid content, but some rewards are given to you periodically as you play.

Smite

[caption id="attachment_373316" align="alignnone" width="1200"]free games on Nintendo Switch Smite Image via Hi-Rez Studios[/caption]

With over 100 gods to choose from and a console-friendly third-person perspective, Smite is one of the best MOBAs out there. There are beginner-friendly modes like Arena and Joust (3v3) to get you started and accustomed to learning your favorite characters. Then there's the Conquest mode with an expansive map and 5v5 combat. Each move adds a strategic element to the battle; for example, Cupid's Heart Bomb is a ranged attack that slows enemies on impact, while Hades can pull in his foes towards him with Pillar of Agony. Like most other free-to-play games, there are real money cosmetics to purchase.

Tetris 99

[caption id="attachment_373317" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Tetris 99 free games on Nintendo Switch Image via Nintendo[/caption]

One of the best free games on Nintendo Switch, Tetris 99 is engrossing as you survive to be the very last player standing. You have to keep up with the ever-increasing tempo of the gameplay and finish lines to send them to an opposing player. The action gets pretty intense at times, but is always worth it thanks to the compelling and rewarding gameplay. Thankfully, there are no microtransactions in Tetris 99, and you unlock new skins for your playfield by finishing in-game tasks.

Tetris 99 comes free with your Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

From vampires to Ganondorf

The May 2023 video games lineup is heating up as we dive (literally) straight back into the land of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and stake vampires in Redfall.

The games keep on rolling in May after an impressive April with Minecraft Legends, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Dead Island 2. Now, we prepare for stealth ramps, open-world titles, and an adventure into Metropolis. Here's what to expect in May.

Darkest Dungeon II (PC)

The highly anticipated indie roguelike follow-up Darkest Dungeon II will finally release out of Early Access on May 8. The sequel seems to be a step up in every way possible from the original. The art style has been improved with upgraded visuals and special FX. The new token system gives your character special perks and abilities, and your characters can get to know each other at the inn while reducing their stress.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch)

Breath of the Wild amazed us when it was first released on Switch (and the Wii U). The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom seems to be even grander as Link explores the skies above and reverses time to solve puzzles. One of the common complaints is how the weapons degrade quickly; thankfully, you can now fuse items together creating all new swords, hammers, and tools. It looks expansive, and Tears of the Kingdom even lets you create your own vehicles that soar in the air and drive around the open world. This mysterious but exciting experience will be released on May 12.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

The most precious game in the May 2023 video games lineup is The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. You'll be playing the unlikely titular protagonist as he tries to find his wonderful Ring of Power. Just like the character in the movie, he has a split personality between the violent Gollum and shy Smeagol. You'll be making decisions along the way that will determine the former hobbit's identity throughout the story; but the game will be mostly stealth-driven as you kill your way or pass through Middle-Earth's deadly creatures. You'll be looking for Gollum's precious on May 25. The Switch is getting the game later in 2023.

Redfall (Xbox Series X/S, PC)

After I realized that Redfall is a Far Cry-like experience with horror elements, I was in. With three other players, you'll be exploring Redfall, Massachusetts, a town that's waging war against droves of vampires. Many haven't survived but it's up to you to protect the remaining citizens. Xbox says the game has "a deep story campaign as you unravel the mystery behind the vampires' appearance." Developed by Dishonored's Arkane Austin, this game features stealth, all manner of different hero load outs, and cool weaponry to find in the wild. In addition, Xbox promises there will be "unique upgrades and abilities to suit your playstyle." The action begins on May 2.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

[caption id="attachment_373351" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League May 2023 video games Image via WB Games[/caption]

Publisher: WB Games
Developer:
Rocksteady
Price: $69.99
Release Date:
May 26
Trailer

As of the time of writing, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is still launching on May 26. As the title suggests, you're playing as the ragtag group of characters such as Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang against the Justice League's Superman, Batman, and The Flash. It sounds ridiculous, but somehow Batman Arkham Asylum developer Rocksteady has a somewhat promising story on its hands if the trailers are to be believed so far.

To the chagrin of many of Rocksteady's fans, however, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a seemingly dull third-person shooter with a live service angle to it rather than the solid single-player experience of the Batman Arkham series. Hopefully, it can blow our expectations out of the water...or not.

[Update: Suicide Squad was been delayed until 2024 mere days after this article was published. What timing!]

Honorable Mentions

The May 2023 video games lineup is also host to a bunch of promising indies and other triple-A titles including:

  • Amnesia: The Bunker (Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PC) - May 16
  • Dokopon Kingdom: Connect (Switch) - May 9
  • Hello Neighbor: Search & Rescue (PSVR 2) - May 25
