How to get the Schiltron Blue Mage spell in FFXIV

Become an unstoppable Blue Mage tank

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 6.45 is here, bringing players plenty of new Blue Mage content to enjoy. If you are happy to level up your Blue Mage again, you’ll be glad to know that the new level cap is now level 80. In addition, there are several new spells to collect, including the new Schiltron spell in FFXIV.

How to get the Schiltron Blue Mage spell in FFXIV

If you want to collect the Schiltron Blue Mage spell in FFXIV Patch 6.45, here’s what you need to do. One of the new Job quests for the Blue Mage tasks you with reaching level 73 with the Job and then collecting the Schiltron spell.

To do so, head to Amh Araeng in The Southern Hills of Amber area, roughly around the (X:13.5, Y:30.0) area. In this region in the southwestern corner of the map, you’ll find a group of Long-tailed Armadillos. These are the enemies you need to obtain this particular spell.

Like all of the other Blue Mage spells before it, you’ll want to fight this enemy until it uses the Schiltron skill, at which point you need to defeat the enemy, and then learn the spell yourself. The problem with this is that the enemy is level 77, and you can do this quest as early as level 70.

As such, I recommend grabbing a couple of Blue Mage friends to do this with. If you have a full party, this level 77 enemy won’t be too much of an issue for you and you can unlock it together. Otherwise, you are going to have a truly tough time doing this, alone or with your Chocobo, at level 73 or so.

Schiltron spell, explained

Once you unlock the Schiltron spell, you’ll find its seems fairly essential for any Blue Mage who wants to run as a tank. Marked as Blue Mage spell #107 on the Spellbook, this one is a game-changer. When you use it, for a period of time, every hit that an enemy lands on you will cause you to automatically counterattack them.

This counterattack will damage them for 50 potency per hit, which isn’t a lot, but it adds up as this is in addition to your usual spells. However, the best part about this is that the potency is 100 if you have the Aetherical Mimicry: Tank spell on.

Blue Mage tanks that run dungeons absolutely need this spell. It will make you not only more effective as the defensive line for your party, but it will let you deal much more damage over time.
