The Dragonborn Class is one of the most interesting in Baldur’s Gate 3, but it’s also one of the hardest to learn how to use effectively. When you create your Dragonborn character, you’ll have to pick a Subrace, which can be a daunting task, as there are ten Subraces to pick from.

This guide will help you pick the best Subrace for your Dragonborn in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Which Dragonborn Subrace is best in Baldur’s Gate 3?

It can be overwhelming to have ten Subraces to pick from. Fortunately, your Dragonborn’s Subrace isn’t too consequential, and the differences between the different Subraces are easy to understand.

Each Subrace will give you a special kind of breath that you can use in and outside of combat. You’ll also gain a resistance. The ten Dragonborn Subraces are as follows:

  1. Black Dragonborn – Acid Breath and resistance to Acid damage
  2. Copper Dragonborn – Acid Breath and resistance to Acid damage
  3. Blue Dragonborn – Lightning Breath and resistance to Lightning damage
  4. Bronze Dragonborn – Lightning Breath and resistance to Lightning damage
  5. Brass Dragonborn – Fire Breath and resistance to Fire damage
  6. Gold Dragonborn – Fire Breath and resistance to Fire damage
  7. Red Dragonborn – Fire Breath and resistance to Fire damage
  8. Silver Dragonborn – Frost Breath and resistance to Cold damage
  9. White Dragonborn – Frost Breath and resistance to Cold damage
  10. Green Dragonborn – Poison Breath and resistance to Poison damage

All Subraces are viable, and there isn’t a bad one. Which Subrace works for you will depend on how you plan on using your Dragonborn. For example, if you’ve got a team member who has water attacks, the Blue Dragonborn may work synergistically.

With that said, for anyone completely lost, you can’t go wrong with the Green Dragonborn Subrace. This is because poison-based attacks are fairly common, even during the early hours of the game. Having resistance to Acid damage will give you some breathing room as you level up.

If you want to play a Dragonborn with a twist, try playing as The Dark Urge. This Origin character doesn’t know much about their history, and they have an insatiable bloodlust. Will you fight the Dark Urge or give in to it?
