We think of video game sequels as something that can outdo the original in most ways, be more of the same, or even hit fans with the heavy hammer of disappointment. That, however, ignores the rare but very real case of sequels that don't necessarily suck but that will baffle fans with their nigh-inexplicable new design choices. We shouldn't forget this class of sequel, it does at least a great job of providing fun to anyone learning about just how absolutely bizarre these games can get.

Silent Hill: Book Of Memories

Remember how the Silent Hill series managed to make players feel scared and uneasy even when no enemy was on screen? Well, nobody had time for that when they were reinventing the square for the PlayStation Vita with Silent Hill: Book Of Memories.

This one isn't a psychological horror game and barely even a survival horror game. It's a weird attempt at making an isometric action title in the vein of the awesome Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light but in the world of Silent Hill.

Heck, you don’t even have one of the simplest staples of psychological horror that the series had done so well up until this point—like the feeling of loneliness and isolation—as this one is a co-op adventure featuring up to four players. Wild stuff.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Remember when the original The Legend Of Zelda changed gaming by taking a cue from the top-down perspective of RPGs and re-purposing it for action adventures?  You don't? Well, neither do I because I was too young to play it back then, but that's what the legend of The Legend of Zelda says.

Zelda 2 is definitely not a bad game (if you're looking for a bad Zelda side-scroller, google Zelda CD-I games), but it’s still pretty weird that Nintendo did away with the revolutionary design they’d come up with in the first one to make a more conservative 2D side-scroller. Nintendo already had Mario dominating that field, and there was no shortage of similar side-scrollers from other companies. Luckily, it didn't take Nintendo long to both go back to their revolutionary formula and then try new stuff that further propelled the series into legendary status.

[caption id="attachment_398485" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Bomberman act Zero's poster that looks a lot like Oppenheimer's Image by Konami[/caption]

Bomberman Act: Zero

This one was absolutely terrible and also marked an awful tonal shift for a beloved cutesy series that definitely didn't need one. I probably wouldn't have put it on the list because this isn't about straight-up bad sequels, but I like how its poster looks just like Oppenheimer's, so that's some extra bonus points for weirdness.

If you're looking for a wacky fun Bomberman game, then you're much better off playing Saturn Bomberman.

[caption id="attachment_398478" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Half-Life 2 survivor's wacky HUD Image by Valve[/caption]

Half-Life 2: Survivor

Remember how the original Half-Life and its sequel each changed the FPS landscape of its time, due to smart gameplay mechanics that forced players to use their brains? Welp, Half-Life 2: Survivor is a bizarre, mostly on-rails arcade version of Half-Life 2 that only came out in Japan.

Do you see that massively busy interface? That's not one of those spoofs of HUD glut that you see all over the Internet—that's the real deal. The reason why anyone would come up with such an antithesis to what made Half-Life 2 great is a mystery, but I'd be lying if I said that I wouldn't spend a few dollars at the arcade to try this mess.

Jak 2

Ever wondered why the original Jak & Daxter had players happily hopping from platform to platform and then Jak 2 was all about gunning down enemies and driving flying vehicles? Sure, Naughty Dog had also previously equipped Crash with a Bazooka for the third game in the Crash Bandicoot series, but Crash's Bazooka only fired Wumpa fruit, not lethal rounds. What the hell happened there?

Well, it turns out that the sequel to Naughty Dog’s once happy-go-lucky platformer became a shooter because Naughty Dog saw the entire gaming landscape change with the arrival of gritty titles such as Killzone, God Of War, and, most importantly, Grand Theft Auto 3. The team made all the changes to the original that they could to accommodate gameplay elements that played similarly to Rockstar's mega-hit, and the series was never the same again.

In Naughty Dog's defense, however, I have to admit that Jak 2 was pretty damn good.

Star Fox Adventures

This is the game that sent the Star Fox series into dormancy and made the titular Fox more recognizable as a top-tier Super Smash Bros. character than as the main character of his own series. Its mistake? It decided to get Fox out of his ship and give him some ground-based missions.

This isn't a new kind of 3D game. This is Zelda with the exception that Zelda games are usually great, and this one is just okay. Star Fox Adventures marks one of the very rare moments in gaming when they would've been much better off just doing an on-rails shooter than a sprawling 3D adventure.

Dino Crisis 3

Dino Crisis has always been an odd Resident Evil clone, but the rule is that you can only send your series to space after around the 8th entry. Picking space as the setting for your mundane terrestrial series in the third entry is too much—especially when it's a game about pre-historic stuff, the historical opposite of space stuff, I guess. Even Exoprimal feels more grounded than this Chimera.

Also, the first two games in the series came out for the original PlayStation, whereas Dino Crisis 3 landed on Xbox as an exclusive, which might have gotten Xbox fans to believe it has always been in space, thus making it all the more hilariously weird.

DOOM RPG

Remember when Doom fans didn't like Doom 3 because it was slower, darker, and spookier? Well, there's an even weirder, blacker sheep in this series: Doom RPG.

For some bonkers reason, Id looked at the "meh" reaction DOOM 3 got and decided to further reduce the amount of action and make a game that was more Final Fantasy than Doom. To Id's credit, however, Doom RPG is pretty decent and was even pretty revolutionary in the mobile gaming scene, as it provided a fully-fledged campaign two years before the iPhone made mobile gaming go big. Did any of the things that you just read entice you to wait for an HD remaster? Well, good luck with that, since Id lost Doom RPG's source code.

[caption id="attachment_398464" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Darkspore's Edgy look Image by Maxis[/caption]

Darkspore

Remember Spore? At some point, it was totally going to be the best game ever made! Sadly, the most fun anyone ever ended up getting out of it came from the game’s extremely advanced creature creator—mostly because they got to create beings that looked awfully phallic.

The people at Maxis looked at the game's lukewarm reception and came to the natural conclusion anyone in the ‘00s would’ve arrived at: it just wasn’t gritty enough. To solve this, they came up with Darkspore, a game that ditched everything from the original except for the creature creator, and then made a gritty action game about a badass creature that went on to battle other gritty, less phallic creatures.

Darkspore wasn’t even bad, but I can’t help but laugh at the very obvious high-speed course correction that was at play here.

There's nothing quite like a new take on a classic game, and Resident Evil 4 should be no exception. We've already encountered enough mods for the remake, so it's nice to see the 2005 version of Resident Evil 4 still getting some love in 2D form.

This one comes courtesy of DooMero over on Doomworld (spotted by PCGamesN), and is essentially a sort-of "demake" of Resident Evil 4 which turns the third-person horror title into a 2D shooter.

https://youtu.be/pJcanNT5iQg

A recent video uploaded to the modder's YouTube channel shows 30-minutes of action from the project. Indeed, we get to see Leon Kennedy, as he was in the original RE4, making his way through the village in glorious side-scrolling action. The twist here is that it's being created in the Doom engine; GZDoom to be precise.

So when do we get to play it?

At the moment, there doesn't appear to be any release date for what's being called Resident Evil 4 2D. DooMero says they've been working on the mod since 2016, but had to take a break. All we can really say is that a demo is hopefully coming soon. We just don't know when.

It's pretty impressive to see something like RE4 being recreated in Doom. It kind of goes to show just how versatile the latter continues to be, not to mention how creative the modding community can get.

It's a bit of a new take on what many would consider to be the best Resident Evil game ever. Admittedly, going to 2D side-scrolling does give it an antiquated kind of charm, but it's just one more way we can admire Leon's golden bangs.

Capcom is one of the giants in the gaming industry, and it earned its reputation through its stable of hit franchises. This year has been a good one for the company, with titles such as Resident Evil 4 Remake and Street Fighter 6 releasing to critical acclaim. Capcom’s most recent quarterly report revealed the company’s bestselling franchises, and there aren’t many surprises.

[caption id="attachment_393594" align="alignnone" width="640"]Claire Redfield in Resident Evil 2 Remake. Screenshot by Destructoid.[/caption]

Capcom franchises continue to thrive - here are the top five as of July 2023

As a surprise to nobody, Resident Evil tops the list, with 146 million units sold in the franchise's entire lifetime. This number has been boosted by Resident Evil 4 Remake, which has sold 5 million units as of July 2023.

Other titles in the series also continue to sell well, with Resident Evil 2 Remake surpassing 12 million units sold. Fans of the franchise can look forward to RE4 Remake’s VR mode which is in development.

The rest of the list looks like this:

2. Monster Hunter - 94 million units
3. Street Fighter - 52 million units
4. Mega Man - 40 million units
5. Devil May Cry - 29 million units
6. Dragon’s Dogma - 7.7 million units

Monster Hunter’s lifetime sales are to be expected, as the report also reveals that Monster Hunter Rise has sold over 13 million units, with Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak selling over 6 million units. Street Fighter 6, the latest entry in the series, launched in June and has already sold over 2 million units.

Plenty of upcoming Capcom titles will ensure those sales numbers stay high. This includes Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy. Hopefully, the indefinitely delayed Pragmata also sees the light of day eventually.

Shuffling along like a zombie

What's the opposite of a speedrun? A "slowrun," perhaps? If you want a Resident Evil challenge that requires you to clear your schedule for the next couple of days, this could be what you're looking for. You see, it turns out the 1998 Resident Evil 2 can actually be completed from start to finish without walking at all.

This was proved by Twitch streamer and speedrunner Punchy (as spotted by PCGamesN). In an edited video uploaded to YouTube recently, they give a commentary on this unique challenge, which saw them get to the end credits of Resident Evil 2 without taking a physical step. While this video is a 40-minute highlight of the run itself, Punchy shows in the closing moments how long it took them to achieve this: 13 hours and 34 minutes!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gjJ4ozkVmE

When asking whether or not the OG Resident Evil 2 can be beaten without walking, Punchy had to establish a couple of rules. First: they could not initiate a walk themselves (i.e. by pressing on the D-pad to walk). However, they could turn to face directions, and walking upstairs was allowed, as it's an automatic animation when the player presses the use button.

How was it achieved?

The way they were able to move was by simply aiming their gun. Doing so does shift Leon forward ever so slightly. We're talking inches. To give an idea of how slow this is, it takes around five minutes to get through the first three screens of the game.

One big challenge was fighting against the auto aim. See, Punchy was playing the Japanese version of Resident Evil 2, which comes with auto-aim always on. This meant that, in areas where enemies were off-screen but otherwise in the opposite direction Leon needed to go, things became tricky as he struggled to make progress.

[caption id="attachment_392889" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Resident Evil 2 (1998): Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield holding guns. Image via Techradar.[/caption]

The ultimate obstacle, however, came during the final boss sequence, in which a five-minute timer begins. Given how slow Leon is moving, this felt like an impossible achievement.

Indeed, Punchy almost gave up, choosing to run the final few meters towards the end cut scene. However, some off-stream testing showed that, by aiming the magnum down at the ground, Leon can actually get enough push to make it to the end of the game before the timer runs out.

The streamer admits this was not the most optimal run. If you feel you want to give it a try, Punchy has proven that it is possible to beat the original Resident Evil 2 without taking a step forward. But be prepared for one of the slowest game play sessions of your life.

Also, let Capcom know your thoughts on the game

Whether we like it or love it, the video game industry is in something of a remake enlightenment of some kind. There are, of course, some fantastic remakes and remasters out there, one of which is Resident Evil 4. Not only a great game in its own right but a fantastic reimagining of what many consider to be one of the best horror titles in existence.

Since the remake was released in March of this year, Capcom's modern take on RE4 has been a rousing success. In fact, according to the developer, the game has now surpassed five million in sales. The press release on the company website says the Resident Evil 4 remake "provides both fans of the series and newcomers alike with a fresh gameplay experience."

https://youtu.be/Id2EaldBaWw

This latest milestone comes just shortly after it was announced that the game had sold four million units. To date, the Resident Evil series has sold around 142 million copies worldwide, going back to its first entry in 1996.

What's next?

Resident Evil 4 may be the latest in a list of remakes Capcom is doing, but is it the last? In June, the studio asked what RE fans wanted to see next, and whether anyone was interested in even more remakes. On top of that, a recent shareholder meeting suggested the developer was not necessarily saying no to remaking spin-off Resident Evil games. Then again, they weren't saying yes either, so it's still up in the air.

Of course, we can't say for certain what's in store. We're pretty confident in saying that RE9 is probably imminent (though we don't have full confirmation on that yet), and it's possible that Capcom may want to do more reimaginings in the future. A lot of fans would probably like to see an official remake of Code Veronica, for example.

In the meantime, you can let the developer know what you thought of Resident Evil 4 by taking this questionnaire.

A remake of Code Veronica, anyone?

Just a few weeks ago, Capcom asked if fans would like more Resident Evil remakes. The survey's over now, but it seems the studio is wondering whether it should continue bringing back older entries in its iconic survival horror series. It's a pretty lucrative venture, after all.

Taking that a tiny step further, a recent general shareholder meeting with Capcom shows that there may be some spinoff remakes being considered. In the summary document (as spotted by GamesRadar), a question is asked about whether the company will be "providing high-end visual remakes of only the main numbered entries in the Resident Evil series?"

[caption id="attachment_390647" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles: A close-up of some black and white zombie faces. Image via Nintendo.[/caption]

The answer is a resounding...well, it's hard to say.

Capcom responds to this question by saying they will be "carrying out discussions regarding the future expansion of this series so it can be enjoyed by a wide audience." This isn't technically a yes, but it seems the company is possibly considering remakes of non-numbered RE installments.

Or perhaps Umbrella Chronicles is more your thing...

Aside from the mainline entries, Resident Evil enjoys a number of spinoffs. Chief among them is Code Veronica (something a lot of fans would like to see make a comeback), Revelations 1 and 2, Umbrella Chronicles, Outbreak, and more. Given this list, it's not as if Capcom will be stuck when it comes to remake potential.

With the success of this year's Resident Evil 4, it wouldn't be surprising if more reimaginings were in the pipeline. But aside from RE5, there isn't really anywhere else for the main series to go unless it's a brand-new entry. Games 6, 7, and 8 are fairly new in the grand scheme of things, so it doesn't seem to make sense to do remakes of them.

At the very least, Capcom has some options, so we'll see what the company has to say about whether or not it wants to give one of the many Resident Evil spinoffs a second run.

Original Resident Evil 3 can now be played from Nemesis’ POV https://www.destructoid.com/original-resident-evil-3-can-now-be-played-from-nemesis-pov/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=original-resident-evil-3-can-now-be-played-from-nemesis-pov https://www.destructoid.com/original-resident-evil-3-can-now-be-played-from-nemesis-pov/#respond Wed, 28 Jun 2023 18:00:03 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=389177 Resident Evil 3: A close-up of Nemesis from the original 1999 version of the game.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis: Nemesis

If you remember the original Resident Evil 3, you'll recall the stress of encountering the brutish tyrant known as Nemesis. Well, the tables have turned, as a new fan-made mod for the classic game lets you play from the perspective of the rocket launcher-wielding beast.

Titled "Nemesis Scenario," curious fans may download this mod from ModDB (thanks DSO Gaming). You can also check the video below to see what it's like to fill the (heavy) boots of Nemesis and go stalking the streets of Raccoon City looking for members of S.T.A.R.S.

https://youtu.be/Jov5_ziYcOM

Flipping the script

Created by retro Resident Evil modder Komizo, "Nemesis Scenario" comes with two game modes. The first is the original, which lets you play Resident Evil 3 from the titular antagonist's point of view. The second is "Arrange Mode," in which you hunt down S.T.A.R.S. and mercenaries, but without the story from the main game.

The video demonstrating the mod certainly takes away the tension typically found in Resident Evil 3. You''ll see Nemesis easily take out regular zombies, with cut scenes from the 1999 Resident Evil entry interspersed throughout. It kind of fits canonically, showing what Nemesis was possibly up to while Jill and Carlos frantically worked on puzzles.

While both the original version and the remake of Resident Evil 4 left a big impact, many have not forgotten the classic entries in the series. Resident Evil 3 and its remake were not necessarily celebrated installments. But the 1999 release still counts itself among the first iconic Resident Evil games that established the franchise.

Speaking of remakes, Capcom recently asked which Resident Evil game fans wanted to see get remade next. Some fans may believe Resident Evil 5's turn is due, but Capcom has made no announcements at this time. For now, if you have the original Resident Evil 3 on PC, you can check out Komizo's Nemesis mod.

We asked several world-reputed masters of unlocking to rank the best puzzles in the series

Though it gave us Resident Evil 4, Capcom's series shift from straight-up survival horror to more action-oriented territory displeased many fans. And if you miss the slower, more cerebral gameplay of the early Resident Evil games, then this list is for you. We've come up with a ranking of the 10 most interesting puzzles in the series that are 100% roundhouse kicking, boulder-punching-free.

[caption id="attachment_386746" align="alignnone" width="1200"]the sliding squares puzzle from the original RE4 Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

10. The Sliding Squares puzzle from Resident Evil 4

The original Resident Evil 4 and its dozens of re-releases mostly did away with Resident Evil's classic puzzles — but not with the concept of puzzles altogether. Perhaps as a cheeky reference to the more elaborate item-hunting puzzles of the past, RE4 tasks players with a challenging but uncomplicated puzzle of sliding tiles.

What you see is what you get with this one: Eight tiles that players have to move around until they form a neat picture that will open a door. It's simple, completely different from what you'd expect, and it does a good job of pausing the action to have Resident Evil players do something completely fresh for the series.

[caption id="attachment_386589" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The drug lab puzzle from the Resident Evil 2 Remake Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

09. The Drug Lab puzzle from Resident Evil 2 Remake

Resident Evil 2 Remake gets a lot of love for completely overhauling the original's gameplay, but it also deserves some credit for its new puzzles. While some of the original's puzzles could have worked in a remake, there's just no point in having fans re-solve something they've known for over 20 years. It's cool for remakes to add new stuff, and the Drug Lab Puzzle from the remake is a good example.

Remember how the scientists from the Resident Evil series seem to not be very good at their jobs? Most players probably don't as in the original RE2 we just grab a vaccine and administer it to Sherry without much concern. The remake does a great job here by actually forcing players to do some lab work that the scientists have failed at. The cartridge dispersal puzzle revolves solely around the pressing of three different buttons so it's pretty simple, but it still provides a nice combination of challenging and fun gameplay.*

*While we stand by how awesome this is in a game, we can't help but stress that rookie cops shouldn't try to do a scientist's job in real life.

08. The Water Sample puzzle from Resident Evil 3

One thing about puzzles in the Resident Evil series is that despite their intended difficulty, you can just go to Gamefaqs or YouTube to completely "outsmart" them. That doesn't happen here, as the water puzzle from the original Resident Evil 3 is randomized. YouTube can give you the gist of it, but you're always going to be the one to come up with the solution.

Outside of that, it's still a pretty fun experience that will have players learn the mechanics at hand instead of forcing them to go on an item hunt.

I certainly don't think all puzzles should be randomized, but having at least one of these per game would be a great idea. Even if just to further terrorize players who believe they can rely on a quick win.

[caption id="attachment_386302" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The chess puzzle from Resident Evil 0 Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

07. The Chess Puzzle from Resident Evil 0

Resident Evil 0 didn't get a stellar reception upon release, but it did get one puzzle very right. In Resident Evil 0's training facility, players will come across a huge chess board. Chances are players will immediately think they'll have to put all of their chess knowledge into practice — or that they'll have to learn how to play Chess — but this actually nothing but a master troll move. Trying to engage with this puzzle that way may lead to death by poison, so we advise players just pay close attention to what they're seeing.

The imposing and beautifully-drawn scenery is but a ruse. Players won't have to challenge Resident Evil 0 to a deadly game of chess — they'll barely even have to move any pieces. In fact, they just need to push the king and the whole thing will be over with. This puzzle does a great job of playing with our natural desire to overcomplicate things.

06. The Clock Tower puzzle from Resident Evil 3

Jill reaches a clock tower and needs to both restore its power and set the time straight so she can call for help by ringing the bell. This puzzle rocks because it involves the amount of exploration and item hunting that you'd normally expect from RE, but most of its steps are intuitive and the thing as a whole seems to make sense. We find the Clock Tower puzzle in the late section of the game, so it’s fair to believe this could really be the ending of the game.

This puzzle is great in and of itself, but what makes it one of the series' all-time greats is its culmination. After all of our troubles, Jill climbs atop the clock tower to finally get rescued. A helicopter shows up to help, but it's immediately intercepted by Nemesis who blows it up with his rocket launcher. What a marvelous punch in the collective gut of so many players in desperate need of escape.

Sadly, the clock tower doesn't exist in the remake, but fans like it so much that they're remaking it themselves.

05. The creepy Doll puzzle from Resident Evil Village

Inexplicably, most Resident Evil puzzles lack fear factor. Whether we're in a zombie-infested city or a monster-ruled village, most puzzles revolve around pretty mundane activities like finding a regular item — usually a crank — and using it to open a door, or collecting a series of keys. Village changes that.

Resident Evil Village's best puzzle has players disassembling and reassembling a doll. Sounds simple and creepy enough, right? Wrong. Well, this doll is actually made to represent Mia, Ethan's girlfriend. This one gains extra points for creepiness, yes, but also for its direct connection to the story.

It also helps that this puzzle leads to the most horrifying moment in the game — but we won't spoil that.

[caption id="attachment_386254" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The cake from the Happy Birthday puzzle in RE7 Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

04. The Happy Birthday puzzle from Resident Evil 7

From the get-go, you know that a puzzle called “Happy Birthday” in this series is going to be anything but. In this twisted celebration, players encounter an old tape that shows someone getting killed after making a mistake when attempting to solve a puzzle. Then, it makes players enter the same room and face a puzzle they already know could turn deadly.

Despite its fame as a horror powerhouse, puzzles in Resident Evil tend to be way more forgiving than those of the much more PG adventure games from Sierra. The punishment for not solving a puzzle in a Resident Evil game tends to be just that of having to calmly try again.

Not here. This puzzle takes Resident Evil into SAW territory, and it works. The fact that we go into this puzzle knowing that it could be our last adds a layer of tension never-before-seen in the franchise.

[caption id="attachment_386726" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The plant boss from REmake Image by Capcom[/caption]

03. V-Jolt puzzle from Resident Evil and REmake

The V-Jolt puzzle does something that the series sadly doesn't usually care for — giving players the choice to use their smarts to beat the enemies. You can ignore the puzzle and enter a firefight with a gigantic zombie plant, but you have the alternative of concocting a chemical mix to fix the problem.

You can totally love the Resident Evil series without loving its puzzles. Many fans find some of the puzzles in the games a chore, but tough luck. Most games in the series require players to solve all of their puzzles if they are to survive the zombies. That phrase must sound insane to anyone who doesn't know the series, but fans know exactly what we're talking about.

Puzzle haters will probably rank the V-Jolt puzzle as their favorite puzzle because it's completely optional, whereas puzzle lovers will probably like it because it's fun.

[caption id="attachment_386237" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Jill Plays the piano to solve the puzzle Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

02. The Piano puzzle from Resident Evil 1

Though not very challenging, the piano puzzle from RE and REmake is one of the most memorable in the series. In the Spencer mansion, players will find a piano that, in true spooky mansion fashion, features a mysterious door-opening mechanism.

Players will open the door by correctly interpreting a music sheet and playing its notes in the correct order. The perfect input will get Jill or Chris to play a segment of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. The result is a beautifully haunting moment in a game that usually just goes for the haunting part.

It also raises poignant questions regarding the Spencer family. Like, “Do the Spencers suck so much that they hate Moonlight Sonata?” There’s no way they would’ve picked a song they liked because that would mean having to close the scary door whenever they decided to play it.

[caption id="attachment_386222" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The dummy finger from the RE7 demo Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

01. Resident Evil 7 demo finger puzzle

Should we be including a puzzle that's not from the actual game? Maybe not, but we think we'd be cheating if we were to ignore its impact because it didn't come tied to a price tag.

This was not a mere puzzle, but a whole Internet-wide event that anyone could join in on. The continually-updating demo for RE7 made sure every player got mad together while trying to figure out the mystery behind a finger, and the result was just fantastic. It was one of those viral community moments that modern gaming should try to achieve more often.

This demo clued us in on the fact that the new Resident Evil would be trying to carry the torch that P.T. had unfortunately dropped, and we're glad that it did. While both Resident Evil 7 and Village feature various action elements, both games do a great job of balancing them with puzzles that beautifully honor the history of the franchise.

The Summer Game Fest presentations are all but complete, but there are still several publishers preparing to do their own thang with their own live streams — And in just an hour from now, Capcom will open up the airways with its own Capcom Showcase presentation, filled with news and updates.

We already know that the veteran developer is preparing to show off several upcoming releases, including action RPG Dragon's Dogma 2, dinosaur battler Exoprimal, and the remastered spook-fest Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. In addition, we can perhaps expect post-launch news for the recently released Street Fighter 6, and perhaps an update on the "Separate Ways" DLC for smash hit Resident Evil 4. There's a lot of possibility, so it should be a fun little stream.

The Capcom Showcase live stream kicks off at 15:00 PT / 18:00 ET / 23:00 BST. The stream won't even take up too much of your time, as it is expected to run a short 30 minutes. The magnetism of a giant lady in a big ol' hat

Two years on from its initial release, (yep, two years), Capcom's gothic-horror title Resident Evil Village is still selling copies and scaring players worldwide — This morning, the publisher announced that the latest, (well, chronologically latest), entry in the survival horror series has surpassed eight million sales.

Resident Evil Village sees returning protagonist Ethan Winters journey into a grim European village, searching for answers following a violent attack on his home and family. There, he will encounter creatures and citizens beyond his darkest nightmare, coming face-to-face with a menagerie of monsters and demons, as well as the four lords of the land — namely Karl Heisenberg, Salvatore Moreau, Donna Beneviento & Angie, and the iconic Lady Dimitrescu, whose impact on the title's marketing, and therefore sales, cannot be overstated.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKocYiRHYlI

Following the game's initial release in May 2021, an expansion pack, Winters' Expansion, was released in October of last year, which added new features and an additional campaign, Shadows of Rose. While the switch from "classic" Resi to the modern, first-person Resi has not been to everybody's taste, it cannot be denied that the evolution of the series has been incredibly impressive, borne out in both the critical and praise heaped upon the titles, as well as the titles' respective sales figures — A VR edition of Resident Evil Village was also developed to launch alongside the PlayStation VR2 hardware.

Resident Evil Village is available now on PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch (via cloud)

Specifically Radeon RX cards

By now, pretty much any horror fan with a current-gen console or modern PC will have played the remake of Resident Evil 4. Capcom's reimagining of one of the best games in the series has sold millions of copies to date. It's pretty much become one of the most successful releases of 2023 so far.

However, if you haven't yet had a chance to give it a go, and you're in the market for a new graphics cards, you may be interested in an offer AMD is doing. The tech giant is currently giving away copies of the Resident Evil 4 remake. The catch, though, is you do have to purchase a Radeon RX GPU. The website gives a full list of the products that are included in the giveaway. Basically, it looks as though most things in the 6000 and 7000 series will net you a copy of the game.

[caption id="attachment_385035" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]A list of AMD Radeon RX graphics cards. Screenshot by Destructoid.[/caption]

The offer is on until July 1, and it doesn't end there, either. AMD says it's also offering up copies of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Again, there's a slight catch. It's only free if you buy a Ryzen 7000 series CPU. As always with these types of giveaways, there are terms that need to be met. Check the footnotes on the AMD website to see what the full conditions are before you dive on in.

Arguably the most anticipated game of the year, Resident Evil 4 smashed Steam player records within moments of being released. Where Capcom is going to take its iconic survival horror series from here remains to be seen, but you can take part in a survey to let the studio know your thoughts.

Jailhouse Rock

If you've been hanging on with eager anticipation for the release date of CGI spin-off Resident Evil: Death Island, then hang no more, as Capcom, and Sony Pictures have revealed that the cool/dopey-looking feature will arrive on physical and digital media on July 25.

The latest in a long-running series of animated movies set within Capcom's survival horror universe, Death Island will see the A-list team of Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy, and Claire Redfield, (oh, and Rebecca Chambers is there too), team up together for the very first time to handle a mutant outbreak on Alcatraz Island. Fans are particularly excited as this is the first time in Resi canon that Kennedy and Valentine have ever crossed paths.

It looks like harmless, monster-mashing fun, with action that you'd expect places its tongue firmly in its cheek, but is probably intended as utterly earnest. This probably will not be the only Resident Evil news we receive this month, as Capcom has recently announced a Capcom Showcase stream to take place this Monday, June 12. We can likely expect updates on updates for titles such as Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Village, including the long-awaited "Separate Ways" DLC for the former.

Resident Evil: Death Island launches on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download July 25.

Capcom survey asks which Resident Evil you want remade next https://www.destructoid.com/capcom-survey-asks-which-resident-evil-you-want-remade-next/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=capcom-survey-asks-which-resident-evil-you-want-remade-next https://www.destructoid.com/capcom-survey-asks-which-resident-evil-you-want-remade-next/#respond Fri, 02 Jun 2023 13:00:15 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=383596 Resident Evil 4 Remake: Leon Kennedy aiming his pistol.

Will it be Resident Evil 5?

The Resident Evil franchise has been on top of the world lately, especially with the release of the Resident Evil 4 remake. Now, not wanting to stop this juggernaut, Capcom is asking you which other game in the iconic survival horror series you'd like to see get remade, if any.

The recent survey poses a few questions about how well people know what's happening in the world of Resident Evil. For example, people are asked whether they follow any of the official social media channels, as well as how familiar they are with the entries, be they games or movie adaptations. One of the final questions then gives you the chance to suggest which installment you'd like to see a remake of.

Survey from Capcom asking questions about Resident Evil.

With Capcom flying high in terms of sales, no doubt the studio is interested in where to take things from here. It should be pointed out that the survey results won't necessarily mean there'll be another RE remake in the pipeline. However, there have already been rumors that the series' 2009 release, Resident Evil 5 could be getting reimagined, but there's no solid evidence for that yet.

Given that the remake of Resident Evil 4 has sold millions of copies, it's not surprising that Capcom wants to keep bringing back older entries. At this point, however, anything past the fourth entry doesn't quite fit the "classic" status of the earlier installments. RE5 is certainly a mainline series entry but arguably may not necessarily warrant a full remake.

Maybe the results of this survey will lead Capcom into deciding an official remake of it is the way forward.

Get ready for something even wackier than Paul W.S. Anderson

Did you come across a preview for the upcoming Resident Evil: Death Island that got you all hyped? Well, we have great news, then. It turns out Capcom has already made many other Resident Evil animated movies in the past...

...And most of them are so beyond bonkers that even fans of the games wouldn't believe it.

Biohazard 4D-Executer (2000)

The first attempt at a Resident Evil animated project is Biohazard 4D-Executer, a name only an exec completely drunk on that sweet '00s juice would pick. You can tell Capcom doesn't care much for it because you can find it on many Youtube channels in its entirety. The CGI 20-minute short feels more like an experiment than a full-blown attempt. It doesn't really prime for its animation and you could say it barely rivals the cutscenes from Resident Evil 3. It did, however, mark the beginning of a weird era.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugdW2MY4pHA

Strong points: Historically important. This is the patient zero of Resident Evil movies. This is the one we have to go back in time to prevent from happening if we don't want to see Milla Jovovich running on walls to roundhouse-kick zombie dogs. Also, it's a relatively original tale in the world of Resident Evil that won't bother anyone for too long.

Biohazard 4: Incubate (2006)

Incubate still isn't Capcom's first Resident Evil animated feature film, but it's yet another interesting experiment. Following up on the massive success of Resident Evil 4, Capcom released this straight-to-DVD compilation of RE4 cutscenes featuring added explainers of what happened in that village prior to the arrival of Leon S. Kennedy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSCQmLKks7M

Strong points: The animation rivals that of its contemporary RE game, but only because it's straight-up a bunch of RE4 cutscenes.

Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)

The 2008 release Resident Evil: Degeneration marks the start of Capcom's attempt at taking over the crowded CGI Zombie movie market. It takes place between RE4 and RE5 and, though fans might not recognize it as canon, it's the one that explains where Tricell (Resident Evil 5's Nu-Umbrella) came from.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBljxfU2G_E

Strong points: Degeneration represents the best and worst when it comes to animated Resident Evil. On the one hand, it's the most sober approach to the genre. On the other, it doesn't feature amazing animation and, more importantly, it's not silly enough. More on that later.

Resident Evil: Damnation (2012)

What lies at the core of the success of the Resident Evil games? We'd bet on the surprisingly cerebral gameplay that lies hiding beneath a supremely dense layer of camp. This probably won't come as a surprise, but the movies don't feature any sort of gameplay. Capcom seemingly decided to make up for that by tripling the amount of camp.

Damnation came out in 2012 and bridges the events between RE 5 and RE 6. It's a step up from Damnation because it features much better animation and also because this is when things begin to get ridiculous.

Forget the days of survival horror. The Marvel Cinematic Universe ruled the world in 2012, so it's high time that you saw a Chris Redfield stand in leading an army of Lickers against the Tyrant in broad daylight. No, really:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmSH3-1V188

Strong points: They tried something new.

Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017)

You could base an entire mental health check solely on someone's response to 2017's Resident Evil: Vendetta. Loathe it and you're healthy, Love it and you're awesome.*

This one takes place between RE and  RE 7, but instead of creating the expected bridge to the seventh installment, it takes a detour to Rabid Racoon City. Remember all those times when Resident Evil 6 was just too much? Well, Vendetta feels like Resident Evil 6 2.

Whereas Damnation tried to emulate the MCU, Vendetta needed desperately to be John Wick on steroids — down to the number of dogs killed in the process.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki9TniAUA1Q

People who complained that the series veered too much into action territory after Resident Evil 4 shouldn't watch this one for their own sake. Each set piece is bigger and dumber than the previous one.

https://youtu.be/se8GcTc6cPM

Strong points: An experience so bafflingly special you'll think no one will believe you if you try to put it into words. That's why we mostly used videos.

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (2021)

Infinite Darkness came out between 7 and Village but nobody cares because this continues Leon's story.

Netflix's 2021 RE: Infinite Darkness is the complete antithesis to 4-D Executer, Capcom's first animated RE thing. It features top-notch rendering and animation but holy crap, does it overstay its welcome. Whereas viewers can just suffer through the entirety of 4-D Executer in 20 minutes, Infinite Darkness is a four-part tv series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-js-Eww1OI

Dividing what should be a 90-minute film into four parts feels reductive. Also, even at its best, Infinite Darkness never even comes close to the entertainment value of Vendetta. Yes, it does provide a much more sober experience than Vendetta, but we no longer want to turn that train around.

Strong Points: Looks good and provides one more Netflix show to talk crap about.

*Don't use the Resident Evil series as a way to check up on someone's mental health.

Sixth consecutive year of growth for veteran developer

Capcom has released its latest financial earnings report, which records the sixth consecutive year of profit growth for the Resident Evil and Street Fighter publisher — The publishing of the new report has also affected the company's share value, which spiked to an all-time high earlier this morning.

According to the numbers, Capcom sold 41.7 million games for the period ending March 31, 2023. This number not only represents a 10 million sales boost from the previous year, but is also the largest year-on-year sales growth in the company's entire history. The boost in sales is attributed to two titles in particular: survival horror remake Resident Evil 4 and the epic fantasy adventure Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.

capcom sales 1

These impressive sales figures also include the continued success of the Capcom catalog, with titles such as Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 2 & 3, Monster Hunter World, and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. Capcom already has several more titles on deck for the remainder of 2023, including dino-hunter Exoprimal and handheld remaster Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. Capcom's biggest upcoming release, however, is inarguably Street Fighter 6, which launches on PC and console platforms June 2. The publisher has already set a target of 10 million sales for the new sequel.

capcom sales 2023

The Capcom success story can be traced back to the launch of Monster Hunter: World back in the winter of 2017. Following a period of decline that saw disappointing launches for Street Fighter V and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Monster Hunter: World would not only go on to be the publisher's best-selling release of all time, but would kick off a series of hugely successful releases for Capcom, resulting in the most lucrative period in the company's 40-year history, as defined in today's report.

Street Fighter and Ace Attorney are included too

"Golden Week" is happening in Japan starting this weekend, and tons of publishers are partaking in the festivities. The good news for folks outside of Japan is that said publishers typically hold huge sales globally, and Capcom's recent Golden Week offerings are what I'd call "huge."

Live on multiple platforms, Capcom's Golden Week sale is significant. Applicable franchises include (many of which have copious DLC on sale):

  • Resident Evil (Village, VII, RE2 remake, RE3 remake, RE4 [OG], RE5, RE6, RE1 remake, RE Zero remake, Umbrella Corps, RE Revelations 1, RE Revelations 2)
  • Monster Hunter (Rise, World, Iceborne, Stories 2)
  • Ace Attorney (Trilogy, Ace Attorney Chronicles)
  • Street Fighter (Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter V)
  • Devil May Cry (DmC, DMC HD Collection, DMC4, DMC 5)
  • Dead Rising (Dead Rising 1, Dead Rising 2, Dead Rising 3, Dead Rising 4)
  • Mega Man (Mega Man 11, Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2, Mega Man Legacy Collection 1+2, Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection)
  • Capcom Arcade Stadium (Stadium 1+2)
  • Okami HD
  • Onimusha
  • Marvel vs. Capcom (Infinite, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3)
  • Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle
  • Lost Planet (Lost Planet 1, Lost Planet 3 Complete)
  • Remember Me
  • Disney Afternoon Collection
  • DuckTales Remastered
  • Dungeons and Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara
  • Strider
  • Flock!
  • Bionic Commando
  • Bionic Command Rearmed

A few of these offerings really bring me back. Bionic Command Rearmed is absolutely worth two bucks, as are, frankly, most of the games on this list. It's a super easy excuse to cozy up with a game like Okami HD and spend the entire weekend playing through it. Most of those Resident Evil games are a steal too, especially if you fancy co-op play with RE5 and Revelations 2.

You can find a helpful visual breakdown of the sale directly on Steam.

These sales are happening on the PSN and Xbox platforms as well

Although Steam has by far the best landing page, sales are also happening on console platforms. Here's a link to each sale page, which contains multiple other Golden Week deals:

Capcom has proudly announced that its recent release, Resident Evil 4, has already smashed past four million shipments and digital sales since its initial launch on March 24, less than a fortnight ago.

"The Resident Evil franchise features survival horror games in which players utilize a variety of weapons and other items to escape terrifying situations," wrote the publisher in a press statement. "Cumulative shipments of the games in the series now exceed 135 million units since the first title debuted in 1996. The meticulous, ground-up remake of the 2005 GameCube classic has already seen smash success, both critically and from a sales perspective with critics and fans, offering intense action, grisly visuals, and reimagined versions of classic boss battles and iconic setpieces, all powered by a WoK3 SouNdTraCk. Three million sales of Resident Evil 4 took place within the game's first two days of release, with a further million copies shifting in the following week.

This is, of course, not even the end of the road for Resident Evil 4, as fans can expect the monster-mashing mode The Mercenaries arrived as a free update for all players just yesterday. In addition, rumors persist that the enjoyable, Ada Wong-driven side-mode "Separate Ways" is also currently in the works, to be released as DLC for the remake at a later date. The incredible success of Resident Evil 4 sets publisher Capcom up for a stellar year, with titles such as Exoprimal, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy, and Street Fighter 6 still on deck for 2023.

Resident Evil 4 is available now on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms.

The village, the castle, or the island?

Once again the Resident Evil 4 remake is split into three distinct areas: the village, the castle, and the island. Even before the remake came around and remixed some of the game's most iconic sections, pretty much everyone had a favorite in mind. With the remake under your belt, what wins out this time around? Or if you haven't played the remake, just sound off anyway!

The castle is one of the best action locales ever made

Even the precipice of the castle sets the tone right away. Everyone involved (including the castle's lord Ramon Salazar) isn't messing around, and these denizens are an immediate step up compared to the enemies that populate the village. They have weaponry, tactics, traps, and some surprises. Taking on a pack of castle Ganados is one of the most thrilling aspects of the game, particularly with some of the new engine and action tweaks in the remake.

The castle has it all: variety, creepy unique enemies, indoor and outdoor combat, and Resident Evil style puzzles. The remake takes things even further than the original in several areas (which I won't spoil here), and tweaks most of the Ashley-centric segments for the better. Hopefully, it ends up making a return in the upcoming Mercenaries mode: its ominous theming and dynamic layout will be a blast to play over and over.

The other two don't slouch, though

The additions to the village zone really set the tone early on, and let me know that this was in fact a remake and not a remaster. Similarly, the island keeps you on your toes and lets you go full action hero without having to babysit Ashley; plus Krauser is always a delight to beat down. I do miss some of the original areas, but the remake (alongside the VR edition) is definitely going to be getting some play in the years ahead.

Leon crushes Famitsu’s ‘Favorite Resident Evil character’ poll, and it’s not close https://www.destructoid.com/leon-crushes-famitsus-favorite-resident-evil-character-poll-and-its-not-close/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=leon-crushes-famitsus-favorite-resident-evil-character-poll-and-its-not-close https://www.destructoid.com/leon-crushes-famitsus-favorite-resident-evil-character-poll-and-its-not-close/#respond Wed, 22 Mar 2023 12:58:22 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=369775

Jill takes the number two spot

If you asked someone who their favorite Resident Evil character was, odds are it'll probably be a primary protagonist. Jill, Leon, and Chris would all be on the scoreboard, and I expect Claire to make the top 10. Beyond that, it's basically anyone's guess. Well, guess no more! There's a recent poll with a rather large sample size to draw from if you're curious how everyone stacks up in 2023.

As shared by ResetEra, Famitsu held a "favorite Resident Evil character" poll in honor of the RE 4 remake, and things are looking real good for that cast. Leon took the top spot as the number one most-liked character in the Resident Evil franchise, and it's not even close. Leon has a nearly 1000 point lead over the second most popular character: Jill. That's followed by Chris, Ada, Claire, Wesker, Ethan, Rebecca, Piers, and Hunk. Wow, I'm glad Hunk made it in!

There's a few takeaways from this: people still love Leon, the star of two of the most beloved Resident Evil games, both of which have modern era remakes. Chris and his rock-punching strength were clearly going to be in the top five somewhere, and Ada's effortlessly cool persona is going to make some waves. Claire similarly is riding high, and has multiple games to draw fans from.

The big surprise for me is seeing the polarizing Ethan on this list at a respectable seventh place, but Wesker, quite honestly, could be anywhere. After his appearance in the first game he's been an anime-like shadowy figure in the thorn of many protagonist's sides, much to the chagrin of a lot of the playerbase. Seeing Piers on the list is surprising too: I don't think a US-centric poll would have him so high.

Either way, Leon is king, and that hasn't changed.

Famitsu 2023 favorite Resident Evil character poll results:

#1: Leon S. Kennedy (2637 pts)
#2: Jill Valentine (1675 pts)
#3: Chris Redfield (1530 pts)

#4: Ada Wong (1019 pts)
#5: Claire Redfield (858 pts)
#6: Albert Wesker (731 pts)
#7: Ethan Winters (721 pts)
#8: Rebecca Chambers (377)
#9: Piers Nivans (355 pts)
#10: HUNK (330 pts)

Axe you nicely

As we near the launch of Resident Evil 4, Capcom has released the first episode in a series of (very) short anime (mis)adventures detailing the events of one Leon Kennedy and his journey through the strange, European countryside — For your approval: Leon and the Mysterious Village.

Produced by Nippon Animation and stylized in a colorful & sunny style, not unlike the cheery work of Hayao Miyazaki and classic "globalized" anime shows of the '80s, episode one "Looking for Ashley" sees Leon stumble across a strange town occupied by a party of friendly locals. It works out incredibly well for our young hero, as you can imagine. But why waste your time reading about it when you could simply be watching it. Are you sitting comfortably?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lppo5cNxrhk&ab_channel=capcomasia

It would be a safe assumption that we will see other anime shorts during the Resident Evil 4 launch period, and nobody would blame you for having the strange feeling that we've been here before. In one of the best marketing campaigns in gaming history, Capcom supported the launch of 2021's Resident Evil Village with a delightful series of shorts featuring puppet variations of that game's main villains. (And boy, I really miss those puppets). Clearly, Capcom has decided that the "creepy cute" aesthetic is the way to go when it comes to promoting its flagship survival horror franchise.

We'll be sure to post all of the Leon and the Mysterious Village episodes here on Destructoid as they premiere. Resident Evil 4 launches March 24 on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms.

Where we droppin', Bingo?

Epic Games juggernaut battle royale title Fortnite is about to get 100% more swoon-factor, as Resident Evil cuties Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield are ready to grace The Ever-Decreasing Circle with their own unique brand of firepower and charged sexuality.

The iconic duo, who made their first appearance in Capcom's legendary survival horror release, Resident Evil 2, are the latest crossover characters to join Fortnite's literal who's who of pop culture stars. R.P.D. officer Leon comes equipped with his trusty assault knife and attache case Back Bling, though is sans his hip jacket, instead rocking his latter-game combat wear.

The fairer Redfield, much like Leon, is stylized after her Resident Evil 2 remake design, and is wearing her bootcut jeans and scarlet biker jacket combo. Claire is repping the Raccoon City Police Department's many locked doors with her R.P.D. Back Bling, and is wielding a special pickaxe stylized as a red-and-white umbrella — A tribute to the terrible bio-weapons manufacturer behind the fall of Raccoon City.

The Raccoon City Survivors pack featuring Leon & Claire is available now in Fortnite for 2,100 V-Bucks. And for much more of Mr. Kennedy, (no, not the wrestler), you can check out the long-awaited Resident Evil 4 remake, which launches on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms March 24.

Timely, with the remake around the corner

I would watch pretty much anything Resident Evil 4 adjacent. That world was a whirlwind of action and silliness, and lends itself well to all sorts of mods, parodies, and projects. There's a reason people are still talking about it all these years later, and why it's basically Skyrim-tier in terms of its multiplatform port proliferation. That fan fervor likely led to this new delightful LEGO animation from creator Cara Aleatorio, who re-imagined the game's intro sequence.

Simply titled "Resident Evil 4 Animation," we're once again whisked away to the intro a lot of us have experienced 50 times or more since 2005: as Leon Kennedy arrives at the initial village in Spain. He quickly discovers the aggressive inhabitants, and the game never really stops from there on out. According to Cara Aleatorio, the project was made in Blender, with the Mecabrics add-on. It took "around 3000 images" to finish up the nearly four minute video, and "1-2 months" of work.

It's amazing how burned in my brain this intro is, and how big of a shock it was to see how things were changed (both subtly and not-so-subtly) in the remake. I can't wait to see all of the reactions from first-timers and long-time fans, but little things like the tower floor in the village square demo collapsing really got me.

Bring Sandwiches

As part of this afternoon's Capcom Spotlight live stream, we got to see a new blink-and-you'll-miss it teaser for Resident Evil: Death Island, the CGI animated movie currently in production at Sony Pictures.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUTrBXdVPAE&ab_channel=ONEMedia

The new teaser revealed that veteran hero Jill Valentine will be joining Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield on their latest volley against the undead. The narrative of the film will the Resident Evil protagonists cross paths as their respective missions lead them to the abandoned Alcatraz Island in San Francisco. One can only assume that they'll find a lot more to uncover at the haunting prison complex than Clint Eastwood's papier mache head.

Resident Evil: Death Island is the next in a growing timeline of CGI films featuring heroes and villains from Capcom's survival horror series. Previous releases have included Resident Evil: Degeneration, Resident Evil: Vendetta, and the Netflix series Resident Evil Infinite Darkness. While there is not a specific release date for Death Island, Capcom and Sony are expecting to release the picture at some point in 2023.

I really, really miss Sheva

Here's an odd but not unwelcome occurrence, Capcom has quietly updated the Steam/PC edition of its survival horror sequel Resident Evil 5. The new patch, now available to download on the Steam platform, adds split-screen local co-op, removes Games for Windows Live, and stomps a few bugs.

Originally released in 2009, Resident Evil 5 saw former S.T.A.R.S. operative Chris Redfield head out to West Africa, investigating a potential Bio-Organic weapon sale, led by terrorist Ricard Irving. Teamed with BSAA operative Sheva Alomar, the duo soon find that this case goes far deeper than mere weapons sales, and will bring Chris face-to-face with some welcome, and very unwelcome, faces from the past.

He also punches a boulder to death.

This Steam update is a long, long time coming, and the removal of Games for Windows Live support eliminates a frustrating hurdle in playing the game. Of course, the Resident Evil series has long moved forward from its heady, tank-controlled, RE5 days, but for those who still enjoy running through the entire franchise with pals, then this new update contemporizes the release for future efforts.

Now, if we can just see to giving Sheva her grand franchise return, that'd be just peachy.

Is there such a thing as too spooky?

Resident Evil Village came, did pretty well for itself, got some DLC, and went. Well, it's back now! The newest mainline RE entry is back in VR form, provided that you have a PlayStation VR 2. Hey, we do! Let's dive into what makes this VR version tick and if it's worth buying into, or loading back up.

[gallery link="file" columns="2" size="large" ids="364879,364880"]

How to play Resident Evil Village in VR, and what the VR version actually entails

You can access the free DLC here or on the PS5 dashboard (where it's listed as "Resident Evil Village VR mode") and it requires a roughly 800MB download. You also need a PlayStation VR 2 headset to play (the old model won't cut it). The DLC patches in an alternative mode to play RE Village when booting it up: and this is a separate mode, mind, with its own save data, trophies, and bonuses.

The full story mode is playable in this VR update. As Capcom puts, it: "The DLC supports the full story campaign following Ethan Winters’ harrowing journey to rescue Rose, his kidnapped daughter."

[gallery link="file" columns="5" size="medium" ids="364883,364884,364885,364886,364887"]

Resident Evil Village VR comfort settings/options

Years back, VR gaming started out with a lack of accessibility options (on both ends of the comfort spectrum), but around 2019, things started to get a little more universally codified. Now, there's a wide range of options to help curb motion sickness, or jack up the game into a near 1:1 recreation of the original (with full smooth turning and everything)

Like many modern AAA VR releases, RE Village VR has a lot of tweaks and toggles:

  • The ability to play sitting or standing
  • Camera speed
  • Smooth (read: regular first-person shooter) or snap (instant) turning
  • The ability to turn the "tunnel" (black bar) comfort effect on or off
  • Dominant hand and dominant eye swapping
  • Aim assist
  • Laser/reticle color changes
  • Subtitle toggling (for immersion)

[gallery size="large" link="file" columns="5" ids="364888,364890,364902,364905,364931"]

What the tutorial/VR controls are like

RE Village VR uses the tried and true "grab stuff intuitively from behind your back/your holster" control method: which still works like a charm (if it ain't broke and doesn't cost a ton more VR R&D money!). You'll learn this through a brand new VR control tutorial, which only takes around 10 minutes, and gets the job done (and then some).

There's shoulder grabbing for bigger weapons like shotguns, your pistol is on your hip, the knife is on a strap on your wrist: but Village takes things one step further by cramming stuff into your jacket (you need to grab and open either side for specific items). Basically everything is mapped to some some of control option on Ethan's person, including an in-game item map (instead of a menu) that defaults to your back left pocket. First aid is administered by grabbing a bottle from behind your left shoulder, popping the cap off with a button press, then pouring it over your body. Dual-wielding is possible, and double pistols is especially viable. Using the knife and putting your hands up to block (and holding the triggers and swinging forward to punch) is similarly responsive and easy to learn. Big bonus points to the development team for allowing you to break glass with your fists instead of pulling out the knife each time!

The only hang-up I have at the moment is the requirement to hold your pistol with both hands for better aim: it's a tad finnicky in terms of getting the pathing right (and not clinking the controllers into each other). I haven't had any similar issues with any other items or weapons so far.

[gallery link="file" size="medium" ids="364894,364903,364904,364932,364933,364934"]

So how is Resident Evil Village in VR? Pretty great

As we mentioned above, RE Village VR is a completely separate mode. You'll need to start over from the beginning (works for me!) and you can thankfully skip cutscenes if you've seen them already (which are viewable in VR format, or the traditional "movie theater screen" presentation via a pause menu toggle). It also has its own set of "VR Mode Challenges," like finding and shooting the main Goats of Warding collectibles for merchant rewards: plus, you can swap back to the original mode from the main menu if you're getting freaked out. And you'll likely get freaked out at least once!

Yeah, I experienced the gamut of VR scares:

  • Despite checking behind me (twice) and barricading the windows in a building, an enemy snuck up on me and basically yelled in my ear with 3D audio jacked up
  • Spooky directional noises freaking me out while wandering the woods in the beginning, weapon-less
  • Almost getting shot in the face with a shotgun by that old man that I knew was coming

Capcom as a whole has learned a lot since the original VR version of Resident Evil 7, and the two new PSVR 2 Sense controllers already do a lot of the heavy lifting. When it comes to VR, it's the little things, right? Opening an old timey door latch realistically (by pulling it up, then horizontally) tacks on just a little bit of fun to VR, and it really adds up. Every reload action in the middle of a fight, and the reflexes inherent to that motion: a lot of it is a brand new skill curve that you'll need to master, like riding a bike for the first time.

You also get....Resident Evil Village. Suffice to say I won't spoil anything here as I'm sure a lot of folks are visiting the titular village for the first time in VR; but there's a lot to explore, uncover, and get spooked by. VR mode really adds to the atmosphere of the game, and heightens the tension and scares that I felt were lacking at times in the original release. I'm psyched to play through the entirety of Resident Evil Village again in VR: currently, I'm making my way through Lady Dimitrescu's castle. Yes, she's very tall.

It's been just the right amount of time for a full replay anyway, and with VR perks in tow, it's like I'm playing it with a fresh set of eyes. I hope every Resident Evil game from here on out has VR support, because it's a great long term value add. At this point you kind of know that if you're buying into an RE project, there's something cool coming down the line. I can get behind that!

Go face to face with Lady D

Capcom has released a new trailer for the incoming PSVR2 edition of its blockbuster horror title Resident Evil Village. In addition, the publisher announced that a free demo will be made available alongside the hardware's launch, which will take place on February 22.

The VR adaptation of Resident Evil Village will see players going face to face with the horrors of The House Beneviento like never before. Fully immersive 3D technology is expected to bolster the forests, huts, castles, and corridors for maximum player impact, allowing hapless users to come face-to-face with a gallery of infamous and terrifying villains, including Heisenberg, Lady Dimitrescu, and, yes, that baby. No Thank You. Not unless it's the puppet versions... I'd hang out with them all day.

The PlayStation VR 2 technology launches worldwide on February 22, and is hoping to set a new market standard for immersive, responsive, virtual reality hardware. While the technology is unquestionably impressive, the PSVR2 unit's exceptionally high price, ($550 USD), will most certainly make it something of a niche purchase within an already niche community. Still, how much do you want to pay for a date with Lady D? Can you put a price on what would surely be the best, and last, night of your life?

Resident Evil Village VR Mode will officially release later in 2023, available as a free download for all Resident Evil Village players.

What might be the next evolution for the Resident Evil franchise? https://www.destructoid.com/what-might-be-the-next-evolution-for-the-resident-evil-franchise/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-might-be-the-next-evolution-for-the-resident-evil-franchise https://www.destructoid.com/what-might-be-the-next-evolution-for-the-resident-evil-franchise/#respond Thu, 02 Feb 2023 22:00:56 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=360712

New Setting, New Threats, New Perspective

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard was, in many respects, a soft reboot for Capcom’s long-standing series. While containing more than enough easter eggs and homages referencing older series entries, RE7 made a number of major formulaic changes which set it apart from its undead-starring brethren. Instead of blockbuster setpieces or sprawling zombie-infested level layouts, Resident Evil went back to the drawing board, placing the player in (what initially appears to be) an abandoned Louisiana mansion.

Resident Evil 4 took the franchise to new highs. Unfortunately, Capcom saw this as a sign that they should reposition Resident Evil as (almost exclusively) an action, rather than horror, franchise. Throughout the later 2000s and early 2010s, Capcom plied the market with a seemingly never-ending slew of mediocre action-driven titles, such as The Umbrella Chronicles, The Mercenaries 3D, and Operation Racoon City. The mixed reception to said games, along with their less-than-stellar sales eventually made Capcom realize it was time for the franchise to go back to its roots.

[caption id="attachment_360714" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Capcom[/caption]

Rediscovering A Successful Formula

From the moment that the first reveal trailer, "Desolation", was shown live at E3 2016, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard clearly drew its line in the sand as being something new, yet familiar. It understood the crucial component behind any decent horror game: Fear. As so many horror films and games have proven over time, one of the best methods with which to pull this off is building tension.

Capcom would later release Resident Evil 7’s "Beginning Hour" demo, a self-contained narrative experience that introduced the player to the decaying residential interiors as well as the frightfully malevolent forces they might find lurking within. The absence of combat here and the minimal number of game mechanics immediately invoked comparisons to Outlast. The photo-realistic capacity of the RE Engine, however, as well as the inclusion of VR support, allowed players to experience the world in new ways that neither Outlast nor prior Resident Evil titles had offered before. Rather than teaching the player to fear the enemies that would populate the world, Capcom ensured that, in RE7, players would come to fear the world itself.

The full game would elaborate on this, of course. While weapons played a more obvious role, these were mainly as a means of escaping from, rather than outright eliminating, (at least at first,) the abominable Baker family. Here, players saw a return to the classic formula of running away from, as opposed to explicitly confronting, a powerful enemy. (Mr. X comes to mind…) This reinforced the utility of another re-emphasized mechanic, that being the gradual unlocking of new rooms, (including safe rooms). increasing the player’s ability to escape one or more pursuing enemies.

[caption id="attachment_360715" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Resident Evil 7 baker family Image via Capcom[/caption]

Finding the right balance...

The response to Resident Evil 7 has been widely positive, with over 11.3 million total copies sold as of November 2022, and a 94% user review score on Steam. While Capcom initially expressed some disappointment at the game’s initial sales numbers during its Q1 2017 release window, (only garnering 3.5 million copies sold, as opposed to the company’s projection of four million,) the game continued to track consistently over the years, and has since become the fourth highest-earning Resident Evil game to date. (Behind Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6 respectively.)

Resident Evil Village took careful note of its recent predecessors and modified the formula further, retaining Resident Evil 7’s first-person point-of-view, and its narrative beat of having the player finding themselves facing off against a family of adversaries, while also bringing back the more action-oriented direction of Resident Evil 4 and its subsequent sequels. It also focused more on maintaining a consistent cinematic-driven narrative throughout the experience. All while not losing a total grip on the fact that it was a horror game. (As anyone who played through the House Beneviento section can fervently attest.)

While Resident Evil Village also brought back the role of common enemies, (something that Resident Evil 7 had largely disregarded,) the theme this time wasn’t zombies, but rather werewolves. When you have mostly vampires filling out the ensemble boss cast, it seems almost fitting to contrast that by having werewolves as common enemy types. Village felt like a natural amalgamation of many of the main series games that had come before, while still managing to put its own spin on many of said elements.

What's Next?

When looking ahead at the future of the Resident Evil series, it is likely a safe bet that Capcom has Resident Evil 9 already well into production, although we’re probably still a few years away from a potential release. In an interview with IGN Japan, Resident Evil Village director Kento Kinoshita confirmed that the next iteration in the series would feature a new protagonist, rather than Ethan Winters or any related Winters characters, noting that:

"the Shadows of Rose story [will] conclude the Winters family saga."

So fans will likely have to take comfort from the resolution found in said Resident Evil Village DLC.

Given the recent trajectory of Resident Evil games thematically and mechanically building upon their predecessors in notable ways, it will be curious to see what path Resident Evil 9 paves. With a new protagonist, and likely a new setting, (if recent games are anything to go by,) will this next upcoming sequel take the opportunity to perform another soft reboot of the series, or continue in the direction set by its two most recent main series predecessors? Only time will tell.

Zombie Splats & Palico Cats

Capcom has updated its "Platinum List" depicting the veteran studio's best-selling title titles of all time — And despite several position swaps, the list's Top 20 remains completely dominated by two of the publisher's most consistent and loved franchises: Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.

Various entries in the premier survival horror franchise take up a total of seven slots in the Top 20, spearheaded by 2017's Resident Evil 7: Biohazard at No.3, 2019's Resident Evil 2 at No.4, and 2009's Resident Evil 5 at No.6. The series' most recent entry, 2021's Resident Evil Village, sits at No.8 with an impressive 7.4 million total sales.

Still waiting on that Annette comeback...

Stalk 'n' slasher Dead by Daylight is getting set to celebrate the suitably spooky Lunar New Year, and will do so via a new limited-time event, bringing with it new in-game decorations, a slew of limited cosmetic items, and brand new skins for its Resident Evil heroes Jill Valentine and Ada Wong.

The Resident Evil x LNY collection will give players the opportunity to bedeck Jill Valentine in her battlesuit, perhaps best remembered for its appearances in the Resident Evil Revelations series, while Ada Wong takes a trip back in time for her iconic split-legged cocktail dress and heels combo, which the sultry spy wore for her debut appearance in 1998's Resident Evil 2, and is easily the most iconic of her looks to date.

Speaking of which, in addition to these new outfits, a new skin for killer "The Blight" will see it transform into the warped and tragic visage of Dr. William Birkin, the Umbrella scientist responsible for the creation of the devastating G-Virus, who ultimately succumbs to its own horrifying mutations. While most of the Lunar New Year cosmetics are time-limited, these three skins are permanent additions to the Dead by Daylight catalog.

Aside from the Resident Evil content, Dead by Daylight will also be celebrating the Lunar New Year with the new Moonlight Burrow event. This will see the realm decorated in creepy, rabbit-themed iconography, while affording players boosted Bloodpoints and themed rewards. Be sure to keep an eye out for the returning Red Envelopes, which will feature a variety of rare prizes and in-game bonuses. For full details on this new event, check out Behavior Interactive's official blog... Or Look to la Luna.

Dead by Daylight: The Moonlight Burrow is now live on PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

10 most iconic video game villains of all time, ranked https://www.destructoid.com/10-most-iconic-video-game-villains-of-all-time-ranked/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=10-most-iconic-video-game-villains-of-all-time-ranked https://www.destructoid.com/10-most-iconic-video-game-villains-of-all-time-ranked/#respond Sat, 21 Jan 2023 20:00:52 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=358800

I'm bad, and that's good

Heroes get a lot of love. The main character of a game is, by their very nature, the star of the show. But a great villain is often even more compelling than a great hero - everyone wants to save the world, but it takes a special soul to want to destroy it.

It's almost impossible to whittle a list of iconic video game villains down to just ten. It would be easy to simply point to the villains from games that sold really well, but that's not really what it means to be iconic. So I tried my hardest to compile a list of ten video game villains who are real icons; the ones who stand tall in the world of gaming, whose silhouettes are enough to send shivers down your spine.

10. Ridley - Metroid

The Metroid games have all sorts of great villains, but if you want to talk about iconography, Ridley's your guy. This nasty space dragon has done battle with Samus Aran on nearly every single one of her many adventures. To be fair, Samus has a pretty good reason to want Ridley dead: he killed her parents way back when.

Secretly, though, I think Samus got over that a while ago. She just wants to flex about beating the same alien pterodactyl like a dozen times.

[caption id="attachment_356767" align="alignnone" width="640"]Sephiroth Screenshot via Nintendo[/caption]

9. Sephiroth - Final Fantasy VII

If you asked ten people who played Final Fantasy VII what Sephiroth's motive was, you'd probably only get three answers, and you'd be pretty lucky if one of them was correct. Honestly, it's hard to remember much about Sephiroth himself. He wears that really cool coat, he's got a huge sword, and he's a weirdly chill co-worker in Crisis Core, but that's about it. He's not even really the main villain of Final Fantasy VII Remake. So how does a character like that wind up on a "most iconic" list? Why does Sephiroth keep cropping up in Final Fantasy VII spinoffs and crossover events?

To answer that question, I'd like to give you a few instructions. First, I want you to open up a new tab on your computer. Now head on over to YouTube, and type in "One-Winged Angel Distant Worlds." Go ahead and click on any of the first three results. See? Iconic.

8. Albert Wesker - Resident Evil

Looking at Albert Wesker now, it's kind of hard to believe that Resident Evil briefly tried to trick us into thinking he was a nice guy. See those sunglasses? Those are very evil sunglasses.

Wesker is such a classic villain. He meddles in things beyond his understanding, he gets arrogant about playing God, he throws his buddies under the bus. Even his death is incredible - how many guys can make it through multiple self-engineered zombie apocalypses just to get launched into a volcano by a missile explosion? Just one. And his name is Albert Wesker.

7. Dr. Wily - Mega Man

Speaking of guys who love to play God, who could forget Dr. Wily? This old weirdo has one of my favorite backstories in all of video games. He had a friend in college, his friend was smarter than him, so he got mad and moved to the ocean to build world-dominating robots. Who wouldn't?

Mega Man games are great on their own, but they're even better for their wrinkly antagonist and his stupid petty robo-army. Now, only one question remains: where is Dr. Wily?

6. Dracula - Castlevania

Maybe it's cheating to include Dracula on this list. I mean, he's Dracula. Of course he's iconic. But Castlevania's version of Dracula is a very specific take on the character, and one who's surely earned his place in the rankings. He's a frightening and sinister foe, and as if his long-standing anti-Belmont policy wasn't bad enough, he's also an awful father.

But, I mean, you've gotta give him credit for that dope line about miserable little piles of secrets. What a cool guy.

5. GLaDOS - Portal

I have a feeling that anyone who's ever heard a single line from GLaDOS would include her on this list. You don't need to have finished Portal, or even played very much of it, to appreciate GLaDOS.

Ellen McLain's performance as GLaDOS in the original Portal is one of the best pieces of video game voice-acting ever, and she delivers similarly impressive results in every other Portal project and crossover. She's so deliciously cruel to Chell, both as a demanding taskmaster and as a very rude friend, and the amazingly resentful songs that play over the credits of both Portal games only serve to cement her as one of gaming's greatest bad guys.

4. Pyramid Head - Silent Hill

..Sorry, Masahiro Ito.

3. Team Rocket - Pokémon

Team Rocket rules. Why does this organization of super-criminals have such a bone to pick with one random kid? Why is their plan for world domination centered entirely around children's sporting events? What, exactly, are they planning on doing once they've stolen all the most expensive pets in the world? How will that materially help them?

I don't know. But I'm glad they're out there trying, because I think they're very funny. They're also undeniably iconic. While they're only the main villains in two generations, they've been cropping up in remakes for years, and they even made a full reappearance as a secondary villain team in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

2. Dr. Eggman - Sonic the Hedgehog

You can call this guy "Dr. Robotnik" if you want, but he'll always be Dr. Eggman to me. He's a man who kinda looks like an egg. It just makes sense.

Ever since Dr. Eggman first started putting animals inside of robot suits, he's been one of the most ridiculous villains in the medium. That's fitting, given that his nemesis is a hedgehog who can move really quickly. There have been other Sonic villains, but I'd bet good money that you can't name three of them. Dr. Eggman, on the other hand, is a true icon. He's been given deeper characterization since his first appearance, but players have been enamored by this rotund rabbit trapper from minute one.

1. Bowser - Super Mario Bros.

Was this spot ever going to belong to anyone else? Bowser, the big lizard who hates plumbers, is one of the greatest villains ever. He's also probably the only character on this list my grandpa would recognize, which is a huge argument in favor of his iconography.

Sure, Bowser has oscillated back and forth between "kidnapper" and "reluctant buddy," but at the end of the day, this guy can only be called a villain, and a very good one at that. Any dinosaur who can be a doting dad, a piece of paper, a tyrant king, a go-karting superstar, and Dennis Hopper is okay in my book.
