A new platform for development

Unreal Editor for Fornite has opened the doors for aspiring game developers to get a foothold on game development. While you might think this would only appeal to novices, the doors are open to everyone. This has led some established developers to see this as an opportunity. Look North World is a small "community-focused" development studio aiming to develop social experiences in Fortnite.

[caption id="attachment_392365" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot by Look North World[/caption]

AAA Devs open new studio to make games in Fortnite

Look North World is founded by Alex Seropian, co-founder of Bungie, Patrick Moran of Disney, and developers who've worked for EA and Amazon. The studio's focus is to develop experiences within the battle royale shooter and work with the community to deliver titles they want to see. Players can give feedback and interact with the developers through their Discord server. To showcase their dedication to the community, they're offering beta testing access to the first 1,000 players who join their discord server.

As of writing, Look North's first title is a 1v1 skill-based shooter called Outlaw Corral. 16 players will work through a tournament bracket to determine a champion through 1v1 fights. The developers claim that this island will help players sharpen their 1v1 skills. While not available yet, their second title, codenamed "Murcielago," is in development.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThTb26MZo2g

It seems strange that a developer would dedicate their studio to developing games exclusively in Fortnite. In a press release, Alex Seropian goes on to justify their studio's business decision.

"Developing in UEFN opens a whole new world of opportunities and we are in uncharted territory. Through experimentation, we will see what the players like and involve them in decisions. We will throw in a mix of fun game components that players love with a healthy dose of humor when we can. We are jumping into it with a 'the virtual sky is the limit' mentality. As we develop creative ideas, we will learn how these platforms engage, entertain and boost social interactions in order to iterate accordingly"

Look North World claims that the studio aims to put community and fun first. With only one game released, it seems only time will tell if Look North World will rise through the ranks of Fortnite Creative's competitive environment. Players can try out Outlaw Corral now by entering the island code 0985-8384-1768.

Fortnite is adding the Battle Bus as a Transformer skin in new physical pack https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-is-adding-the-battle-bus-as-a-transformer-skin-in-new-physical-pack/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fortnite-is-adding-the-battle-bus-as-a-transformer-skin-in-new-physical-pack https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-is-adding-the-battle-bus-as-a-transformer-skin-in-new-physical-pack/#respond Tue, 04 Jul 2023 15:00:16 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=390101

Battle Bus, Roll Out!

Fortnite has shown that it will collaborate with just about any major IP. From Marvel to DC, to even Dragon Ball, Fortnite has become the Who's Who? Of Battle Royales. Their latest IP they've managed to snag is none other than Transformers, and they're making sure they can get in on the fun.

The Fortnite Battle Bus gets the Autobots Treatment in Latest Physical Pack

Fortnite's Latest Physical Pack, which includes three new skins, three new back blings, 1,000 v-bucks, two emotes, and three new pickaxes is coming soon. Entitled the "Transformers Pack" this bundle will cost about $25 USD without taxes, and includes Bumblebee, Megatron, and a new Transformer based on the Fortnite Battle Bus.

[caption id="attachment_390110" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot From Epic Games[/caption]

Bumblebee comes with a back bling based on his car-door wings, as well as a Stinger Sword Pickaxe. The pickaxe also comes with a built-in "Battle Ready" emote.

[caption id="attachment_390111" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot From Epic Games[/caption]

Megatron's portion of the pack comes with a Decepticon logo back bling, and the Energon Mace Pickaxe. The built-in emote for this Pickaxe turns it into his iconic Fusion Cannon.

[caption id="attachment_390112" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot From Epic Games[/caption]

Last, but not least, Fortnite's own battle bus becomes a Transformer as well, complete with the "Bot Air Balloon" back bling, and the Pick Axle Pickaxe.

The physical pack will be sold in retail stores on October 13th, with digital versions of the pack being available on October 21st. There's still time to work through Chapter 4: Season 3's battle pass, to complete the Transformers collection with Optimus Prime before he leaves at the end of the season!

10 best free games to play on PS5 right now https://www.destructoid.com/10-best-free-games-to-play-on-ps5-right-now/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=10-best-free-games-to-play-on-ps5-right-now https://www.destructoid.com/10-best-free-games-to-play-on-ps5-right-now/#respond Mon, 19 Jun 2023 19:00:33 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=387335

Don't Pay to Play

Gaming can quite quickly become an expensive hobby. The non-stop conga line of fantastic games this year has made it harder than ever to play without hurting your wallet. Not every worthwhile experience has a price tag on it, however. With the following PS5 titles, you'll have a blast without spending a cent.

[caption id="attachment_387340" align="alignnone" width="640"]Apex Legends map. Image by Respawn Entertainment.[/caption]

10. Apex Legends

When it comes to free-to-play games, fans of first-person shooters have more than enough to pick from. Apex Legends is a battle-royale style game featuring a cast of characters serving as either Recon, Support, Skirmisher, Assault, or Controller. With a good variety of guns and maps, it is a title that easily hooks players for hours at a time.

[caption id="attachment_387345" align="alignnone" width="640"]Shooting in Destiny 2: Ghost of the Deep. Image by Bungie.[/caption]

9. Destiny 2

Yet another first-person shooter appears on the list in the form of Destiny 2. It has managed to remain relevant thanks to constant expansions, including Lightfall in 2023. With Sony's acquisition of Bungie, it appears the franchise will be supported for a long time to come.

[caption id="attachment_387344" align="alignnone" width="640"]Combat in Warframe. Image by Digital Extremes.[/caption]

8. Warframe

The third-person shooter Warframe was first released in 2013, and it has maintained popularity since. It uses a mix of both procedurally generated and fixed levels that have players using guns and stealth. With new expansions regularly released, it's always a good time to start playing Warframe.

[caption id="attachment_387342" align="alignnone" width="640"]Character in Sky: Children of the Light. Screenshot by Destructoid.[/caption]

7. Sky: Children of Light

Sky is a game that is best experienced instead of described. Players who enjoyed titles like Journey and Flower will instantly fall in love with Sky. Much like the aforementioned titles, Sky features a minimalistic style of storytelling along with multiplayer elements implemented in unexpected ways. Play Sky, it may be the best thing you do all week.

[caption id="attachment_387339" align="alignnone" width="640"]Sims painting in The Sims 4. Image by Maxis Studios.[/caption]

6. The Sims 4

The popular life simulation game The Sims 4 went free-to-play in 2022, breathing new life into a somewhat dated game. Although the controls on consoles are occasionally awkward, The Sims 4 is definitely worth playing. It has earned its longevity through its expansive gameplay, detailed character creator system, and quirky humor that has characterized the franchise for years.

[caption id="attachment_387343" align="alignnone" width="640"]Characters on the street in Fortnite. Image by Epic Games.[/caption]

5. Fortnite

It's hard to make any free-to-play list without including Fortnite. Over five years after its initial release, it has since grown into a phenomenon encompassing celebrities, music concerts, and various other gaming franchises. Nevertheless, it remains ol' reliable when it comes to exciting battle royale gameplay.

[caption id="attachment_387359" align="alignnone" width="640"]Lifeweaver in Overwatch 2. Image by Blizzard.[/caption]

4. Overwatch 2

The first-person shooter Overwatch 2 is one of the most popular games of its type around. Gameplay is fast-paced and fun, with a learning curve that's not too steep. The player base is very active, ensuring you can jump into the action at any time.

[caption id="attachment_387341" align="alignnone" width="640"]Car hitting ball in Rocket League. Screenshot by Destructoid.[/caption]

3. Rocket League

When it comes to addictive gameplay, it's hard to do better than Rocket League. Released in 2015, it has players playing soccer with rocket-powered vehicles. It has since developed a competitive scene, though casual players can still easily join at any time. In 2020, it went free-to-play, opening the game to an even wider audience.

[caption id="attachment_387338" align="alignnone" width="640"]Bean falling during loading screen in Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. Screenshot by Destructoid.[/caption]

2. Fall Guys

Fall Guys launched in August 2020, and it was an immediate record-breaking hit. Though it may not make as many headlines in 2023, Fall Guys is still a silly battle royale game with an active user base. Much like the show Takeshi's Castle, players are tasked with completing an assortment of games and obstacle courses. Little beans are the competitors, which makes things all the more sillier.

[caption id="attachment_387336" align="alignnone" width="640"]Astro in Astro's Playroom. Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

1. Astro's Playroom

Astro's Playroom is bundled with the PS5, and it familiarizes players with the features of the DualSense, as well as the blinding speed of the console's SSD. It is, without a doubt, a must-play for every PS5 owner, and years later it remains one of the best showcases of the PS5's abilities.

The game features gorgeous visuals that reference many classic PlayStation franchises, and the platforming gameplay is both fun and varied. The only wish now is that the PSVR 2 receives a similar title.

There is a good variety of free-to-play games available on PS5, and they'll satisfy fans of sports games, shooters, and platformers. Upcoming free-to-play games to look out for include the soccer game UFC, as well as the MMORPG Throne and Liberty.

Top 10 best multiplayer games on Nintendo Switch https://www.destructoid.com/top-10-best-multiplayer-games-on-nintendo-switch/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=top-10-best-multiplayer-games-on-nintendo-switch https://www.destructoid.com/top-10-best-multiplayer-games-on-nintendo-switch/#respond Fri, 09 Jun 2023 22:00:37 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=385126 Best Switch multiplayer games

Get the party started

The best Switch multiplayer games excel at bringing friends and family together of all gaming backgrounds. Whether you're competing for glory in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or making jokes in any given Jackbox Party Pack, there are a lot of Switch multiplayer games to play. Here are the best Switch multiplayer games on the Switch: just keep in mind a few of them require a Switch Online subscription!

[caption id="attachment_385148" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Runbow Switch Image via 13AM Games[/caption]

10. Runbow

Runbow is a hidden gem to the nth degree.

This party-platforming hybrid has you trying to survive quick platforming levels that constantly fluctuate. Nine players compete to be the first one to the flag at the end, and the wild colorful visuals truly pull you into the game. In fact, the platforms camouflage and blend with the constantly switching colors and disappear, adding an extra amount of challenge. While playing Runbow at an Extra Life event, I was shocked to pass through a tough section, getting so much fun from the chaotic nature of the game. This is a surprisingly entertaining Switch multiplayer game that you should pick up.

[caption id="attachment_385156" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Nintendo Switch Sports best Switch multiplayer games Image via Nintendo[/caption]

9. Nintendo Switch Sports

Nintendo Switch Sports does what it says on the tin. Like Wii Sports, you get a bunch of entertaining physical recreation activities to play. The Joy-Con does a great job of replicating the Wii remote, but unlike Wii Sports, this game supports online play, adding more replayability. You can compete to be the very best and unlock new costumes for your characters along the way.

You can play Badminton, Golf, Soccer (football), Volleyball, Bowling, and one of my personal favorites Chambara. Read our review of the game if you aren't sold yet!

[caption id="attachment_385160" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Ultimate Chicken Horse Switch Image via Clever Endeavour Games[/caption]

8. Ultimate Chicken Horse

I've never laughed so hard at a game than Ultimate Chicken Horse. The goal is simple: You need to head to the exit of the level. However, with each passing turn, you place obstacles in the way.

The action gets chaotic as rotating spikes are stuck to honey and pucks fly towards you at lightning speed. The fun revolves around the idea of making the level as difficult as possible for your rivals, but at the same time, easy enough to finish the stage. It can get so intense that your jaw drops.

[caption id="attachment_385174" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Splatoon 3 multiplayer Image via Nintendo[/caption]

7. Splatoon 3

One of the best Switch multiplayer games is Splatoon 3. The goal is to cover each area with as much ink as possible. If your team expands its ink more than the other, you win. That's it! Kinda.

You're using all manner of different weapons like a bow and arrow, a paint roller, and even katanas to win. The clothes you unlock throughout the game give you different abilities as well. The concept is simple, but Nintendo's maps and unique take on a third-person shooter with ink-splitting makes Splatoon 3 stand out. The co-op-focused Salmon Run is engrossing as well. "You jump into a match, ink some turf, kill some enemies, see who wins in dramatic fashion (sigh or cheer), and repeat," said Chris Carter in his Destructoid review. "It’s a loop that works even better than before because of all the aforementioned wrinkles in the formula, with some gameplay smoothing as well."

[caption id="attachment_385178" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Jackbox Party Pack 5 Best Switch Multiplayer games Image via Jackbox Games[/caption]

6. Jackbox Party Packs

The Jackbox Party Packs are perfect for friends and family. The games are relatively easy to understand, and the only controller you need is your phone (or another device that has internet and browser access). You'll be surviving in Trivia Murder Party by answering out-of-the-box questions, trying to come up with the funniest one-liners in Quiplash, and even trying to get the most dates amongst yourselves in Monster Seeking Monster.

Jackbox Games has so much creativity within its game design, and its Party Packs will help create memorable experiences for everyone in your immediate vicinity.

[caption id="attachment_385197" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Mario Party Superstars Best Switch multiplayer games Image via Nintendo[/caption]

5. Mario Party Superstars

While the Jackbox Party Packs can create memorable experiences, Mario Party Superstars might be infamous for your friendships. The board game-like title has you competing to get the most stars. You're exploring the board, finishing entertaining mini-games for coins, and then by the end of the game, you'll be ranked by the number of stars and coins you own.

It gets really competitive too, as you can steal coins and stars from other players. If you've played a Mario Party game before, you may recognize some of the boards Mario, Luigi, and the like play on. Memorable mini-games also return to the classic series like Mushroom Mix-Up and Bumper Balls.

[caption id="attachment_385235" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Fortnite Best Switch multiplayer games Image via Epic Games[/caption]

4. Fortnite

This may get a lot of flak, but Fortnite is an absolute blast. This battle royale has impeccable controls, a stunning Unreal Engine 5-powered world, and extremely cool weapons that are added each season. It's constantly being updated, adding new surprising gameplay elements. Teaming up with friends, completing missions, and then winning the match is so much fun within Fortnite. The game is far more accessible now for those who don't want to build; there's a zero-build option that is solely focused on shooting and world exploration.

It's also wild to see Kratos, Master Chief, Goku, and Spider-Man all at the same party. With Fortnite, anything can happen. You don't want to miss out.

[caption id="attachment_385202" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Super Mario 3D World Best Switch multiplayer games Image via Nintendo[/caption]

3. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

Excellent game design? Check. Fun four-player multiplayer? Check. Gorgeous visuals? Check. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is the full package. This previous Wii U exclusive excels on Switch with the addition of faster movement speed and the addition of online play. The music is also stellar from the start, especially for the introductory world of Super Bell Hill. I still listen to covers of that track regularly!

The cat forms in 3D World also let you crawl up walls, adding momentum to the already stellar Mario platforming format. It's one of the best multiplayer Switch games you can play on the hybrid system.

[caption id="attachment_385248" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Super Smash Bros Ultimate Best Multiplayer on Switch Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

2. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an incredible achievement. The character list is huge with heroes and villains from all over gaming history. Third-party characters like Final Fantasy's Cloud, Metal Gear Solid's Snake, and Castlevania's Simon Belmont fight against the likes of Mario, Link, and Fox in epic battles.

Tallying up your opponent's health meter to high percentages with your arsenal of attacks and then launching them into the stratosphere is super fulfilling. There's a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competitive scene for a reason as many love the simple, but deep combat of the game.

[caption id="attachment_385266" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Best Switch multiplayer Image via Nintendo[/caption]

1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

The best Switch multiplayer game is undoubtedly Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The tracks are absolutely stunning with plenty of detail and gorgeous artistic visuals. Driving in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe feels perfect as you drift around corners and get a successful boost.

Additionally, the music keeps up the exciting tone with a big orchestra performing the score. This is a game you can set up in a living room, and four people will quickly grab a controller and play. It's simplicity at its best. Hopefully, you can avoid that annoying blue shell!

Fortnite Wilds Season 3 release date & information, revealed https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-wilds-season-3-release-date-information-revealed/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fortnite-wilds-season-3-release-date-information-revealed https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-wilds-season-3-release-date-information-revealed/#respond Fri, 09 Jun 2023 09:30:26 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=385364 Fortnite Wilds Season 3 release date, time, information revealed

The War for Cybertron comes to Fortnite

A new era is arriving for Fortnite, and this one is going to be a little bit wild. Fortnite Wilds is the name of the new season for Chapter 4 Season 3, introducing players to various map changes and content. The best part is that its release is impending across all platforms.

Fortnite Wilds Chapter 4 Season 3 release date, revealed

As announced during Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest livestream, Fortnite Wilds drops on Friday, June 9, 2023 worldwide. If the season follows the more recent trends of Chapter 4 seasons, it should last for about three months before giving away to a brand new one.

Wilds has quite a lot in common thematically and visually with a Chapter 2 season, Primal. During that season, players had a more feral and primitive island to check out, which had taken over wildlife. Fortnite Wilds has a similar theme, if the new reveal trailer is anything to go by.

What’s new to Fortnite Wilds Season 3

https://youtu.be/P2JnTforl_4

From this preview, there is a fair bit of information that we can glean about the upcoming Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 3. Wilds will apparently feature some massive changes to the island, including what appears to be a large crater somewhere on the map.

This crater looks fairly massive, with various ruins, temples, and other structures throughout it. This return to a more untamed island also means the long-awaited return of the velociraptors from Chapter 2. The trailer shows a squad of players riding them, so it seems that players will be able to tame these creatures and use them as pets once again.

It’s uncertain if there will be other animals added to battle royale, besides the raptors, but there are a host of new characters who will be debuting on the island. The most surprising of these is the latest crossover character in the form of Optimus Prime from the Transformers universe.

With the summer blockbuster film, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Optimus Prime and potentially other characters are coming to Fortnite Wilds. For now, the leader of the Autobots is the only confirmed character from the franchise, but there is always the chance that someone else, such as Megatron, could make an appearance.

There is also a glimpse of Fishstick firing Optimus Prime’s cannon in the trailer, which could indicate that a new limited-time weapon could be arriving this season. Regardless, Epic Games already teased some of the characters for the new Fortnite Wilds Battle Pass. It looks like Meowscles is getting a new tiger version, alongside an Ultron-like robot character, and more.

Thankfully, players don’t have to wait too long to see this new season, as it arrives on Friday, June 9, 2023.

Oh, Spider-Man 2099 is in too

After teasing an Across the Spider-Verse film crossover event for a week now with "Where is Miles Morales?" posters: we're entering the final stage of Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 2 with this latest spider-themed update. Accompanying a series of Week 11 quests are two new skins (Miles and Spider-Man 2099), alongside of the return of the Web-Shooter item.

This season is extremely motion-heavy, with katana airdashes, lightsaber double-jumps, and omni-directional mobility gear from Attack on Titan. It's a veritable buffet of crossovers and one of the most densely packed seasons in that regard. It's a bit much at times, but it's one of my favorite seasons in recent memory as there's a lot going on, no-build mode is still a staple, and weekly quests no longer operate on the FOMO system.

You can find a full breakdown of the event below. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is still gunning for a June 2, 2023 theatrical release date, so this crossover is pretty timely!

I just can't wait once we set sail! It will be great!

Fortnite is a bustling home for creativity after the Creative 2.0 tools were released, and a Kingdom Hearts fan has actually recreated Destiny Islands in the game for others to enjoy. In a video posted by HiddenxRoxas on Twitter Monday, the Destiny Islands area was showcased within Fortnite, and the video has been watched by over 60,000 people. It's still a work-in-progress by creator iamintehmafia, but some key elements of the introductory world are replicated very well with the Unreal Engine.

Our hearts led us here with a guiding key

[caption id="attachment_378730" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Sora and Kairi Fortnite Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

If you use the Island code 3604-1677-0449, you'll be dropped into the small world of Destiny Islands in Fortnite. You're placed where Sora first wakes up in the original Kingdom HeartsYou'll see the waves rushing into the sand, the crooked palm trees, and the charming wooden bridge that takes you to an offshore area. The waterfall and rooms around the higher sections of the map are also around this user-generated location. You'll also notice the HP and MP meters from Kingdom Hearts on the bottom right

The main aim of this island is to collect all the coins around the area. It's an easy task, but this place is more about exploration than anything else. On the offshore island, you can actually see Sora and Kairi sitting on a tree gazing at the ocean view. It calls to mind the sad Kingdom Hearts 3 ending when Sora is taken to Quadratum.

Can you see the cave from Kingdom Hearts' Destiny Islands in Fortnite?

[caption id="attachment_378731" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Destiny Islands Sora drawing Fortnite Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

As you collect more coins, a path will open up, revealing the cave where the keyhole lies. You'll see Sora's cute drawing of him and Kairi sharing a paopu fruit, and an Organization member. If you accept the darkness that he offers, the world furthers into the night, and creatures begin to attack you. Unfortunately, a keyblade doesn't come to your hand, but as it's a work-in-progress, perhaps more elements will be introduced later.

There is no music to be had in this Destiny Islands recreation as of yet, so I recommend playing a version of it in the background. Kingdom Hearts characters are currently not in the game, but there have been hints that Sora could join Fortnite with a survey from Epic Games showing interest, according to FN News.

Fun that doesn't break the bank

For some, the Nintendo Switch can be an expensive investment. Once you've purchased the console itself, there are additional Joy-Con controllers, the Nintendo Switch Online membership, and, of course, first-party titles like Super Mario Odyssey that almost never seem to go on sale, even years after their release.

Thankfully, there are some awesome games on this system that cost absolutely nothing to play and are most certainly worth your time and attention. Here are the 10 best free-to-play games on Nintendo Switch you can enjoy right now.

Dauntless

[caption id="attachment_373146" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Dauntless Switch Image via Phoenix Labs[/caption]

If you don’t have the money right now for an adventure title like Monster Hunter Rise, then Dauntless is another good, and similar, option. The action in this game gets pretty intense, as you take on beasts of all sizes, alone or with your friends. You’ll also be able to craft the armor and weapons you’d like from each monster you slay. Dauntless also offers cross-play between all platforms, unlike the Monster Hunter series, which gives this free-to-play option a leg up on the competition.

Deltarune

[caption id="attachment_373147" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Deltarune free Nintendo Switch games Image via Toby Fox[/caption]

Toby Fox’s follow-up from the Undertale series Deltarune is entirely free-to-play with no microtransactions in sight. The story is suitably entertaining, while Toby Fox maintains the much loved, oddly-natured lore of the Undertale world and characters. As you’d expect from the series, there is some stellar battle music and a unique pixel art style. If you’re a fan of Undertale, this is a must-play.

Fall Guys

[caption id="attachment_373148" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Fall Guys free Nintendo Switch games Image via Epic Games[/caption]

One of the most adorable free-to-play games you can play on the Nintendo Switch is Fall Guys. Against 59 other players, you’re competing to get the crown at the end of several mini-games. You’re going through tough obstacle courses with the silly physics of the game, scoring goals by heading a ball into the net or trying to outlast other players from disappearing platforms. It’s a lot of fun. I’ve only ever been able to get a crown once, but when I finally got it, I felt like a million Show-Bucks.

There are cosmetic items you may want to buy in Fall Guys, but the good thing is that they don’t affect the stats of any player.  This isn’t pay-to-win. Something to keep in mind is that developer Mediatonic organizes free events, giving you costumes for finishing tasks.

Fortnite

[caption id="attachment_373149" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Fortnite Battle Royale Image via Epic Games[/caption]

Some hate it, and others love it, but no matter where you stand you can’t deny that Fortnite is a smash success. Epic Games brings out compelling maps and guns that keep its fanbase entertained. The battle pass every season provides a lot of value, and the quests the developer provides are entertaining enough to keep you invested in the chaos of the game. I personally disliked the building elements of the original concept, but there is now a popular Zero Build mode that has consumed my gaming schedule.

Ninjala

[caption id="attachment_373150" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Ninjala Free Switch games Image via GungHo Online Entertainment[/caption]

Ninjala is almost as if Splatoon and Super Smash Bros. had a baby. Sporting adorable visuals, this multiplayer masher has you whacking each other with weapons, jumping from place to place with high energy, and mapping out every wildly creative stage. The music is also quite a highlight, similar to the Squid Kid series. Personally, I don't play this game due to its tendency for expensive microtransactions, but, from a gameplay standpoint it's an absolute delight, especially with friends.

Overwatch 2

[caption id="attachment_373313" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Overwatch 2 free to play Switch Image via Blizzard[/caption]

It's great that one of the very few big-budget FPS games on the Nintendo Switch is also free to play. This 5v5 hero shooter has all manner of characters with unique abilities and weapons to operate. Teaming up with your friends and forming strategies is so much fun within Overwatch 2's elaborate maps. Unfortunately, the skins are locked behind seasonal battle passes and microtransactions on the game's store, unlike its predecessor. One big positive, however, is that the series finally supports crossplay.

Pokemon Unite

[caption id="attachment_373314" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Pokemon Unite Free to play Image via Tencent[/caption]

Pokemon Unite is an absolute delight. It takes the MOBA mechanics of a game like League of Legends and places it into a thrilling 3v3 battle arena. The action is frenetic as you master each Pokemon's specific moves and work together to defeat the enemy team. The graphics are quite delightful, despite the game being available on both mobile and the Nintendo Switch. Like the previous entry on this list, there is also crossplay between those two platforms.

Something to keep in mind is that there are multiple microtransactions in the game. There are cosmetics such as costumes for your Pokemon and trainer, a battle pass, and other purchases that your wallet should be scared of. You can earn in-game rewards, however, through the free battle pass and performing well in Ranked.

Rocket League

[caption id="attachment_373315" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Rocket League Free Switch Image via Epic Games[/caption]

Rocket League is a simple concept that works so well on the Switch. You drive RC cars on a football/soccer pitch, flipping and turbo-boosting in order to score goals. If you need help as a beginner, on the other hand, you can enlist your friends from all platforms and still have fun on the field, There are car skins, antennas, rocket trails, and more to unlock through paid content, but some rewards are given to you periodically as you play.

Smite

[caption id="attachment_373316" align="alignnone" width="1200"]free games on Nintendo Switch Smite Image via Hi-Rez Studios[/caption]

With over 100 gods to choose from and a console-friendly third-person perspective, Smite is one of the best MOBAs out there. There are beginner-friendly modes like Arena and Joust (3v3) to get you started and accustomed to learning your favorite characters. Then there's the Conquest mode with an expansive map and 5v5 combat. Each move adds a strategic element to the battle; for example, Cupid's Heart Bomb is a ranged attack that slows enemies on impact, while Hades can pull in his foes towards him with Pillar of Agony. Like most other free-to-play games, there are real money cosmetics to purchase.

Tetris 99

[caption id="attachment_373317" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Tetris 99 free games on Nintendo Switch Image via Nintendo[/caption]

One of the best free games on Nintendo Switch, Tetris 99 is engrossing as you survive to be the very last player standing. You have to keep up with the ever-increasing tempo of the gameplay and finish lines to send them to an opposing player. The action gets pretty intense at times, but is always worth it thanks to the compelling and rewarding gameplay. Thankfully, there are no microtransactions in Tetris 99, and you unlock new skins for your playfield by finishing in-game tasks.

Tetris 99 comes free with your Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Fortnite patch v24.20 is a big one – adds Attack on Titan content https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-patch-v24-20-is-a-big-one-adds-attack-on-titan-content/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fortnite-patch-v24-20-is-a-big-one-adds-attack-on-titan-content https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-patch-v24-20-is-a-big-one-adds-attack-on-titan-content/#respond Tue, 11 Apr 2023 19:03:11 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=373269

The Dirt Bike and Port-a-Bunker have been unvaulted, too

Fortnite is roughly halfway into its second season of Chapter 4, and that means it's Attack on Titan time. On top of the ODM (Omni-directional mobility gear) grappling system, there are also a few Titan dummies strewn about the world to slice, as well as some more challenges. Let's take a look at everything Fortnite patch v24.20 added in.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEuQe0PIhsc

All the Attack on Titan stuff arriving in Fortnite

  • The Eren Jaeger (main character) skin can be unlocked for battle pass owners by completing certain quests, on top of extras like Attack on Titan sprays and back bling.
  • Captain Levi and Mikasa Ackermann are premium shop outfits.
  • The ODM gear allows players to grapple around (like the web shooters or grappling hook in the past): with the ability to slice/attack and hover.
  • Thunder Spears are a new weapon type: they're arm-launched and are explosive.
  • Scout Regiment lockers (themed chests) are scattered throughout the map and contain the aforementioned items.
  • The small Jaeger’s Family Basement area has been added.

The beloved dirt bike is back, as is the Port-a-Bunker

  • The Dirt Bike from the previous season has been unvaulted: which is another word for "returned to the item pool." Though it will not be playable in arena or tournaments (like Thunder Spears).
  • The Port-A-Bunker is unvaulted in Zero Build as well.

Some guns have been tweaked

  • The Mythic Havoc Pump Shotgun (which is super easy to get this season) has had its max headshot damage reduced.
  • The Mythic Overlocked Pulse Rifle had its accuracy and hipfire rate reduced, and the number of Pulse Rifle rewards have been reduced when capping a rift POI (like the floating island) in Trios and Squads.
  • Similarly, the Mythic Havoc Pump Shotgun drop count in vaults has been reduced in Trios and Squads.

Where we droppin', Bingo?

Epic Games juggernaut battle royale title Fortnite is about to get 100% more swoon-factor, as Resident Evil cuties Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield are ready to grace The Ever-Decreasing Circle with their own unique brand of firepower and charged sexuality.

The iconic duo, who made their first appearance in Capcom's legendary survival horror release, Resident Evil 2, are the latest crossover characters to join Fortnite's literal who's who of pop culture stars. R.P.D. officer Leon comes equipped with his trusty assault knife and attache case Back Bling, though is sans his hip jacket, instead rocking his latter-game combat wear.

The fairer Redfield, much like Leon, is stylized after her Resident Evil 2 remake design, and is wearing her bootcut jeans and scarlet biker jacket combo. Claire is repping the Raccoon City Police Department's many locked doors with her R.P.D. Back Bling, and is wielding a special pickaxe stylized as a red-and-white umbrella — A tribute to the terrible bio-weapons manufacturer behind the fall of Raccoon City.

The Raccoon City Survivors pack featuring Leon & Claire is available now in Fortnite for 2,100 V-Bucks. And for much more of Mr. Kennedy, (no, not the wrestler), you can check out the long-awaited Resident Evil 4 remake, which launches on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms March 24.

A new Fortnite creation tool is on the way

Epic is launching its Unreal Editor for Fortnite, and its arriving very soon. The creation application will let users design and publish content directly into Fortnite starting March 22, 2023.

This creative tool has been talked about before by Epic CEO Tim Sweeney, as a way for people to build in-game content and release it in Fortnite. Thanks to the new store page for the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), we've got details on what exactly that entails.

The UEFN will allow users to import meshes, textures, animations, and audio. Animation, gameplay design, custom content, and more are all in store. Plus, it will have a Live Edit tool for real-time collaboration and revision control, as well.

Epic plans to share more details next week, during its State of Unreal talk at GDC 2023.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teTroOAGZjM

Tap into the unreal

A few FAQs on the Unreal Editor for Fortnite page clear up a bit about how this differs from other creation tools, as Fortnite already has Creative mode. UEFN is a PC-only editor with a range of tools. Rather than Creative, where you're controlling a character to build and edit islands, UEFN has more similarities with the tools and workflows used to develop Fortnite Battle Royale itself. It's planned to be built out and evolve through its Beta launch.

The result could be a fair bit of user-generated content, a la Roblox. Which, given how massive Roblox is, makes sense. I'm curious to see just what people can do with these tools, but also very curious about what plans look like for publishing and potentially monetizing this new wave of Fortnite content. Hopefully we'll learn a bit more during next week's State of Unreal chat.

“Fortnite Mega” teased in new tweet, new season coming March 10 https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-mega-teased-in-new-tweet-new-season-coming-march-10/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fortnite-mega-teased-in-new-tweet-new-season-coming-march-10 https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-mega-teased-in-new-tweet-new-season-coming-march-10/#respond Wed, 08 Mar 2023 14:05:52 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=367593

This is the rumored first-person season

Just a few days ago we were given copious leaked info for the upcoming Fortnite season, which will shift away from The Witcher and the medievil focus into something else entirely. Thus far the key info we've gotten seems to be "first-person mode" (likely similar to how no-build is a separate, hopefully permanent mode now), and a neon aesthetic. A new tweet from Epic Games appears to confirm the latter.

https://twitter.com/FortniteGame/status/1633120555153989636

The tweet is classically "Fortnite vague", and just reconfirms the neon setting that has been present in leaks and rumors this past week. The phrase "made with precision" seems to be referring to the chef in the picture (who could be a skin), teasing players to "prepare for Fortnite Mega" (which could simply be the nomenclature of the new season/zone). As usual the marketing for Fortnite is on point; as there's a combination of rumor-spreading, speculation, and semi-confirmation that's just enough to talk about. Once the seasonal skins and tie-ins are fully confirmed, that's when the floodgates will open.

The biggest news out of this tweet is that the new season (Chapter 4 Season 2) actually starts on March 10 (note: the current season ends on March 8). A follow-up tweet confirmed that there would be downtime on March 10 at 2AM ET, with the season likely debuting shortly after.

Rumor: First-person mode coming to Fortnite in new season https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-first-person-mode-new-season-update-rumor/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fortnite-first-person-mode-new-season-update-rumor https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-first-person-mode-new-season-update-rumor/#respond Mon, 06 Mar 2023 13:00:34 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=367091 fortnite first person mode new season

Looking down the barrel of a gun, son of a gun...

Fans of Epic Games' Fortnite are currently picking apart new rumors that an all-new first-person mode is in the works for the battle royale juggernaut, with established leakers suggesting that the new perspective on Fortnite's cartoonish chaos will be arriving in the game's next season.

Fortnite has been a third-person battler ever since its initial launch in 2017, back when perhaps none of us had any idea of what a staggering global success Epic Games' venture was set to become. While some weapons in the game world already come equipped with first-person "iron sights", this supposed new mode would see players explore the game world directly through the eyes of their avatar — from first drop to failure.

https://twitter.com/HYPEX/status/1631821256688300033?s=20

Several credible Fortnite leakers have lent weight to the rumor, including @HYPEX, @GMatrixGames, @ShiinaBR, and @iFireMonkey. The new mode would certainly bring a whole new perspective, (literally), to the massively multiplayer scrapper, and perhaps the ever-encroaching storm will seem even more concerning when you're looking at the dang thing with your own two eyes... or Robocop's, or Ryu's, or Bruce Campbell's, or Jinx's, or whichever of the baffling choice of pop-culture figures you have purchased for your own trip into Fortnite's litany of islands.

While there is currently no launch date for the third season of Fortnite, the current season is scheduled to end this week, on Wednesday, March 8 to be precise, so we can probably expect official word on Chapter 4 Season 3 and its contents very soon.

Fortnite is available now on PlayStation, PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms.

10 games that got way better with updates https://www.destructoid.com/games-that-got-way-better-with-updates-ranked/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=games-that-got-way-better-with-updates-ranked https://www.destructoid.com/games-that-got-way-better-with-updates-ranked/#respond Sat, 04 Mar 2023 18:00:22 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=365722

From bad to bad-ass

I come from an era of gaming where updates didn't exist. If a game was bad or broken when the cartridge hit store shelves, there was no fixing it. Sorry kiddo, but you're stuck with Pit Fighter until your next birthday or holiday. Today, updates are expected, whether it's a day-one patch that developers have to crunch to get out or that thing where Nintendo withholds completed content from its sports games to add them in as updates later. While we old-timers may lament the era of gaming where everything worked at launch, the truth is I have no idea where this industry would be without them.

I mean, if you think delays are bad now, imagine a world where a post-launch update still didn't exist. Sorry kiddo, but you're stuck with your vanilla copy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on PlayStation 3.

Thankfully, we do have updates. Updates that not only squash bugs developers couldn't nab during production but can literally save a game from a terrible launch and turn it into something millions of people will want to play. That's what this list is all about.

Here are the top 10 games that got better with updates.

[caption id="attachment_365965" align="alignnone" width="640"]game updates Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

10. Cyberpunk 2077

Of all the games on this list, Cyberpunk 2077 easily had the most high-profile disastrous launch since the Diablo III release debacle. After numerous delays, the game landed with big sales and even bigger outrage. On PC, it played just fine. If you were one of the millions who picked it up on console, well, your mileage would vary. The game was riddled with bugs that rendered it virtually unplayable on the PS4 and Xbox One. Current-gen consoles didn't fare all that much better.

Thankfully, with updates, the game is now in a state most people would call "What it should have been what I bought it." The game is playable on all the hardware it's available for. Yes, I know that's tepid praise given the time and money CD Projekt Red sunk into this game, but given how poor this game was when it was released, getting it to the state it's in now was no small hurdle for the developers.

9. Fallout 76

Fallout 76 should have been a complete disaster. Its launch was riddled with game-breaking bugs and a massive controversy over a canvas bag. People complained about the lack of NPCs in the world as they tried their best to break the game with nuclear weapons. Any other developer might have moved on from the project given its reception, but Bethesda stuck with it, dispatching droves of patches. These updates added new modes and content—including NPCs—and fixed as many bugs as you can with the janky-ass Creation Engine. In 2020, it received four massive updates, including the version 2.0 update that many saw as the turning point for the game. By 2022, Fallout 76 had more than 13 million players worldwide.

8. Fortnite

Given what the game is today, it can be difficult to remember what Fortnite was actually like when it first launched. While most people now know it as the game where Ryu from Street Fighter can shoot Spider-Man in the face with a shotgun, the first Fortnite was a cooperative PvE survival game. That was before Epic Games caught wind of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and decided to make its own 1v100 shooter. That move proved to be one of the most financially sound decisions in gaming history as Fortnite is now a billion-dollar IP with millions of players around the world. It's also a damn good shooter that has been updated throughout its life, forever tweaking the formula and adding new skins to keep people playing (and paying).

7. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Seige

One issue with game updates is that they can often distort just how bad a game was at launch. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Seige is a perfect example of this. Today, it's one of the top esports titles in the industry, and reviews at launch were mostly positive. But the people who were there from the beginning remember just how shakey those first couple of months were for the multiplayer shooter. In fact, things got so bad Ubisoft almost took the game offline. But consistent updates from the team at Ubisoft Montreal — including gameplay overhauls, reworked maps, and a roster of uniquely designed operators — saved Seige and made it one of the most important and successful titles in Ubisoft history.

6. Star Wars Battlefront 2

When it launched, Star Wars Battlefront 2 actually wasn't that bad of a game. It controlled well, had an enjoyable if insipid single-player mode, and was a generally fun shooter. Unfortunately, EA knew the title would be huge given its predecessor, 2015's Star Wars Battlefront, sold like hotcakes despite its lack of content. Knowing this, the publisher and its developer DICE decided to load Battlefront 2 with an annoying assortment of microtransactions that made consumers mad. And not mad in the, "I'm going to complain about this online" way, but made in the "Let's all work together to get this changed" way.

Fans united against EA's handling of the game, and by 2018, the publisher relented and unlocked all the heroes in the game, which was one of the key sticking points for players. The entire situation was an embarrassment for EA. I mean, how many other game companies have made the Guinness World Record Book for the most downvoted comment on Reddit?

[caption id="attachment_365980" align="alignnone" width="640"]Street Fighter V Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

5. Street Fighter V

Street Fighter V had plenty of bugs and connection issues at launch, but its biggest problem was its disappointing dearth of content. While 16 fighters is a decent enough number for launch, the vanilla release lacked a story mode and an arcade mode, the latter of which has been standard in the industry since Street Fighter II first took the world by storm. Post-release updates corrected these mistakes, adding a cinematic story mode just a few months after launch and an arcade mode with the debut of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. Future updates would add more content and characters to the game, eventually making it one of the most well-rounded fighters Capcom has ever produced.

4. Ark: Survival Evolved (Switch Release)

The original Switch release of Ark: Survival Evolved had the distinction of being one of the worst games available for the best-selling console. Developer Abstraction made a pretty big deal out of getting the game to run on the hardware, but when people actually got to see it in action, it wasn't exactly something people should be proud of. The game was a complete mess with awful graphics and terrible framerates.

Fixing this game would require more than mere updates. It would require an entirely new build. And that's exactly what Studio Wildcard did. Working with the team at Grove Street Games, the Switch version of the game was completely rebuilt, becoming one of the best examples of Unreal Engine 4 on the hardware. And that was something of a surprise given that GSG was also responsible for the poorly received Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.

3. Aliens: Colonial Marines

Including Aliens: Colonial Marines is a bit of a cheat here as it was never fully fixed with an official update. The game was released in 2013 to poor reviews and tepid sales, becoming yet another forgetting experience in the Aliens universe. A big part of the issue was the poor AI of enemies, which in comparison to the excellent Alien: Isolation released one year later, was embarrassing for such a high-profile game.

While developer Gearbox Software couldn't amend the issue, a modder in 2017 found a way to significantly improve the game's AI by correcting a spelling mistake in the code. "Teather" became "tether," and the aliens in the game started behaving as they should have all along.  So hats off to modder jamesdickinson963, who decided to go line-by-line through the Aliens Colonial Marines code to find that little error.

2. Final Fantasy XIV

When it launched in 2010, Final Fantasy XIV was a wildly underwhelming shell of a game with bad gameplay, a terrible interface, and a lack of polish throughout. Sure, the game looked outstanding, but looks can only get you so far. It was an absolute mess, and to save the game, Square Enix brought in Naoki Yoshida, aka Yoshi-P, to right the ship. Having just come off the successful launch of Dragon Quest X, Yoshida would have the monumental task of creating content for the original version of FFXIV while also building an entirely new version that would replace it.

In 2013, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn launched to great reviews from press and players alike, cementing the Square Enix title as the new king of MMOs. As of 2023, the game is still going strong with no signs of slowing down.

[caption id="attachment_365970" align="alignnone" width="640"]No Mans Sky Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

1. No Man's Sky

No Man's Sky is what I consider to be the poster child for the power of post-launch updates. The game was one of the most highly anticipated titles in the run-up to its 2016 launch promising players an entire universe of uncharted planets to explore. Those pre-release trailers sold it as something you'd never forget, and, well, if you bought the game at launch, chances are you won't soon forget how lousy it was. Its initial release just couldn't match what players were expecting.

But the developers at Hello Games stuck with it, releasing a bevy of updates over the next few years that improved nearly every aspect of the game while adding features that have made it arguably the best space sim ever created. Version 4.0 launched in 2022, bringing the game to Nintendo Switch and overhauling the experience for the benefit of all players. The original version of No Man's Sky now only exists in old memes and YouTube videos that in no way represent what an amazing game it has become.

He's finally ready

Ever since the launch of Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1, we've had teases of Geralt of Rivia entering the fray. So we waited. And waited. And now he's here, as of February 7, 2023. As is the case with several other crossovers mid-season, Geralt is linked to the battle pass: so you'll need it to unlock him. Thankfully though he's on a completely separate track, so you aren't required to level up the core battle pass at all.

Here's a quick rundown on how to nab him.

Bounties are still the same as they've been for quite some time in Fortnite, and you'll need to head to a bounty board to start this questline.

Kick off every match at a point of interest/named location on the map and you'll spot bounty boards very easily. Remember that your target needs to die by any means to get the "completion," so don't stress too much about hunting them down. Getting bounties right after starting a match will ensure easy clears.

Defeat a boss

One of the easiest targets is the Ageless Champion in The Citadel.

Just swoop in early, and tag it to get credit. The Ageless Champion has major issues with height differentials, so gaining he high ground (ha) will help you clear him easily. Just retreat if he goes near you.

Emote in the Citadel throne room

The Citadel throne room can be reached directly by parachuting into it at the start of a match. Use this opportunity to take out the Ageless Champion too!

Deal 500 melee weapon damage to opponents

As is the case with many challenges, getting a Shockwave Hammer is a surefire way to get a lot of melee damage in fast (and it can swipe at multiple enemies). One of the best ways to acquire one is in The Citadel. We have a full guide on it here!

Of course, you can just use your standard pickaxe (especially when you drop in at the start in a group of enemies). Another trick is to fly to the very end of the bus route, then pickaxe the AFK players (and swim to shore).

Page two of Geralt's questline (with more cosmetics) is coming on February 28

While you can unlock Geralt now, additional cosmetic options won't open up until February 28. An "alt style" for Geralt has been teased, much like prior mid-season character drops.

Such is the way of Fortnite!

Things are back to the old way

Epic Games has unveiled their full plans for the return of the Dragon Ball Z franchise in Fortnite, and the fairly big content patch is live now.

On top of the return of the Kamehameha and Nimbus Cloud items (as well as the capsules that deliver them), we're also getting Gohan and Piccolo. Here's a full breakdown, as well as a brief overview of a very welcome weekly quest change.

Here is all the 2023 Dragon Ball stuff that was added to Fortnite

Both Gohan and Piccolo were added in as premium outfits (characters), which you can buy with V-Bucks.

Gohan Outfit

  • Gohan's Cape Back Bling - A gift from Piccolo to inspire him to return to training. (Included with the Son Gohan Outfit. Can only be used with this Outfit.)
  • Gohan's Beast Axe Pickaxe - Go beyond ultimate!
    • Reactive — surges with lightning upon hitting Weak Points.
  • Capsule No. 576 Glider - Property of Capsule Corporation.

Piccolo Outfit

  • Piccolo's Cape and Turban Back Bling - Cape and turban that Piccolo can put on and take off with his demon power. (Included with the Piccolo Outfit. Can only be used with this Outfit.)
  • Piccolo's Demon Symbol Back Bling - The mark that Piccolo used to wear. (Included with the Piccolo Outfit.)
  • Piccolo's Handheld House Pickaxe - Piccolo's unique shell-like house.
  • Red Ribbon Army Aircraft Glider - Property of Red Ribbon Army.

You can also once again access the Dragon Ball Adventure Island area (through code 5642-8525-5429), which will earn you Orange Piccolo and Gohan Beast Sprays.

Five more Reality Augments were added too

  • Rift-Jector Seat (anytime your shield breaks, you'll rift into the sky after a short delay)
  • Shadow Striker (Become able to get Shadow Bombs from containers)
  • Icy Slide (Get a brief icy speed boost after sliding)
  • Harvester (Foliage you destroy will drop Big Bush Bombs and forageables. Also increases the effectiveness of eating forageables)
  • Mythic Ammunition (Obtain a Mythic Pistol)

Most importantly, Epic Games dropped the weekly quest FOMO timer

As of this season, Epic Games made a number of changes to the quest system, much to the chagrin of the playerbase. Arguably the biggest alteration was the addition of adding timers to weekly quests: forcing players to "earn them or lose them" during a certain timeframe. That's changed.

Here's the full rundown from Epic games:

"From v23.30 and onwards, Battle Royale Chapter 4 Season 1 Weekly Quests will no longer expire after a week. They will remain until the end of Season, meaning players can complete a set of Weekly Quests anytime until Chapter 4 Season 1's end date."

In short, from today until the end of the season, you can finish weekly quests at your leisure. It took long enough! Hopefully the next season has this system implemented day one.

The next Fortnite collab drops just in time for the Dead Space Remake

As one of the most popular games in the world, Fortnite is known for a whole host of different things, but its most famous feature is probably its huge variety of crossover events. They've teamed up with everyone from Star Wars to Ariana Grande, and now Fortnite is back with their Gaming Legends Series to collaborate with yet another iconic video game protagonist: Isaac Clarke of Dead Space fame. Clarke serves as the player character of all three Dead Space games, and is described as a "ship system specialist and necromorph slayer" by Fortnite's blog post. Yeah, that sounds about right to me.

Clarke is coming to Fortnite in the new Strange Transmissions Quest Pack, which will be available in the Item Shop for $11.99. The pack will include the Isaac Clarke Outfit, the RIG Back Blind, the Plasma Cutter Pickaxe (which comes with a built-in Bench Upgrade Emote), and the Strange Transmissions Quests that can earn you up to 1,500 V-Bucks.

https://twitter.com/FortniteGame/status/1617673934349942785

This FortniteDead Space collaboration lands only four days before the long-awaited Dead Space Remake, which is officially out on Friday January 27, 2023. Now fans will be able to get extra hyped-up by taking on the new Strange Transmissions quests, and I expect we'll be seeing a ton of Isaac Clarke's flying around Battle Royale Island soon enough.

Sinister skin returns to Fortnite store

The sinister Plague Doctor skin has returned to the in-game store of Epic Games' juggernaut battle royale title, Fortnite. The purchasable costume has been conspicuous by its absence since January 2020, notably the same timeframe that saw the growing status of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

As noted by Eurogamer, the "Scourge" and "Plague" skins have made frequent appearances in Fortnite's rotational shop since their 2018 debut, available to purchase for 1500 V-Bucks each. But both outfits have been missing for two years, finally making a reappearance in-store earlier this week. The skins depict the frightening, beaked "plague doctors" of the 16th century, who would fill the beaked masks with herbal remedies in an effort to stave off infection as they visited the slums of working-class patients.

While Epic Games never made any open statement as to the reasoning behind the costume's removal, it's not hard to imagine that somebody might have thought it a wise and prudent move to not fill the world's most popular video game with Plague Doctors during a period of global sickness.

The COVID-19 pandemic is, of course, very much still with us, but enough time has passed that many companies and communities are readjusting to a "Post-COVID" status, though it should be clearly noted that the coronavirus and its variants are still infecting hundreds of thousands of people on a daily basis. In total, some 13.2 billion doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered since 2020.

Let’s rank some live service games’ holiday events https://www.destructoid.com/lets-rank-some-live-service-games-holiday-events/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=lets-rank-some-live-service-games-holiday-events https://www.destructoid.com/lets-rank-some-live-service-games-holiday-events/#respond Tue, 20 Dec 2022 22:00:57 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=354974

Which game brings the most holiday cheer?

Seasonal events in live service games are something I look forward to every year. Whether they're for the holiday season at the end of the year, or the best time of the year aka spooky season, it's always a good time to collect all the themed cosmetics and jump into a special game mode that will only be around for so long. These days, pretty much every live service game worth its salt has a holiday event to speak of, and with so many great ones out there (and a few that deserve a lump of coal), I had to do what we games journalists do — I had to rank them.

So here's my list of the live service holiday events of 2022. When it came to the games I chose, it came down to which titles I play, are intrigued by, or believe to generally have a big audience. I tried to keep things varied, but admittedly I am drawn to first-person shooters and cozy life sims. Those preferences will be reflected here. Generally the main qualification was whether or not they make me feel the holiday spirit, which is intentionally intangible on my part, because at the end of the day it's my list and I'm gonna rank 'em how I want. If I missed the holiday event from your live service event, make sure to share your thoughts and we can duke it out in the comments. Happy holidays, y'all!

10. Call of Duty - Festive Fervor

Call of Duty Krampus

Last year, this event would have been at the top of this list. There was a Krampus (or basically a big scary buff goat dude inspired by the figure of European folklore of the same name) running around the map and causing chaos, killing any player that stood in his way. Shipment is already my favorite Call of Duty map to play, but having a genuinely frightening creature hunting you down only added to the chaos and fun — hence the name “Festive Fervor.”

Plus it was always hilarious to see a dude come barrelling around the corner at me full speed, only for me to catch a glimpse before he took me out with his knife. I was laughing so hard I didn’t even care that I died.

This year, Call of Duty is at the top of my Naughty List, because they’re not even having a winter event at all this time around. I get that entirely different studios worked on Vanguard and Modern Warfare II, but Festive Fervor was one of my favorites and the fact that they didn’t bring it back is a total downer.

9. Dreamlight Valley - Gift of Giving

I get it — we’re too busy in Dreamlight Valley trying to save the kingdom to take a bunch of time off to hang around for the holidays. Well, maybe a little break wouldn’t hurt… After all, removing Night Thorns is one of the Festive Star Path events you can do as part of the event. All in all, though, Dreamlight Valley’s Gift of Giving is pretty par for the course – collect holiday outfits, furniture, and decorations for the town. You get access to all of those things by completing tasks, which are fairly simple, like petting animal companions or mining in the Plaza.

I’m docking points on this one, because doing chores in order to get your presents doesn’t evoke the holiday spirit to me. Plus, there’s kind of a way to sneak around it if you’re willing to dish out some real world cash for in-game currency. No thanks.

8. League of Legends - Winterblessed

League of Legends’ winter event, Winterblessed, certainly isn’t anything to turn your nose up at. There’s plenty to get excited about if you’re already nose-deep in League, but the offerings aren’t enough to make a casual like me want to dive into the proverbial pile of snow. You’ve got your themed Runes, in-game consumables, costumes for your minions, a snowy map, skins, and more. There are some themed missions as well, which include regular in-game actions like dealing damage or getting a triple kill, while you can also complete a mission for throwing snowballs. Fun!

There is a bit of a downside, however — while you can earn pretty much all of the cosmetics by going the free-to-play route, you can't get the coveted Prestige skin without buying in first. I've never met Santa, but I like to think he couldn't take kindly to premium battle passes.

7. Elder Scrolls Online - New Life Festival

The Elder Scrolls games always intimidated me because of just how big they are with so many things to do all the time, so it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to me that their holiday event would be just as substantial. The main draw to Elder Scrolls Online’s New Life Festival are the New Life Festival Boxes (they could have been a little more creative with the naming convention, but I digress). These boxes contain all kinds of valuable items that relate to the festival, including recipes, ingredients, or rare collectibles.

There are a whole host of quests that players can complete every single day to earn up to ten boxes every 24 hours. Players who love the grind will absolutely love the New Life Festival, and while it’s fun to see the townspeople getting into the holiday spirit in game, I admit this one is a bit too much for me.

6. Overwatch 2 - Winter Wonderland

I really wish I could put Overwatch 2’s Winter Wonderland higher on the list, because it truly has been one of my favorites to play over the years. There are multiple limited-time game modes that come around each year, and considering they have an ice-themed hero to play off of, they do a great job of utilizing her kit to make for some unique arcade modes.

Blizzard usually puts out some awesome cosmetics, with the winter-themed skins being some of the absolute best you could get in the game. My problem with this year’s Winter Wonderland will sound familiar to anyone who has heard my complaints about Overwatch 2 in general — it’s pretty slim pickings when it comes to the new skins, and aside from the Brigette skin you can grind for, you have to buy the rest in the shop. Bah humbug.

5. Destiny 2 -  The Dawning

I don’t play Destiny, not because I don’t think I’d like it, but because I think I’d like it too much and be sucked into a black hole of catching up on the game’s insanely detailed lore. This year’s Destiny holiday event, known as "The Dawning", will not only get you some festive skins and weapons, but you can throw snowballs at enemies and bake treats for your friends.

That’s insanely adorable, and if Bungie is willing to put that in the game, it makes me think that Destiny 2 really would be my cup of tea all over again.

4. Fortnite - Winterfest

I haven’t touched Fortnite since it was in early access before the battle royale mode was even introduced, and the game sure has changed a lot since then. If there is one thing I know for sure about Fortnite, though, is that they never do anything halfway, and that goes for their holiday event, too.

Not only are there some festive cosmetics on offer, but there’s an entire cozy lodge where players can enter and open gifts. I’m a real sucker for anything cozy, so it sounds like Fortnite fans are gonna be in for a real treat this year (especially because the My Hero Academia crossover also just dropped).

3. Rocket League - Frosty Fest

I’m terrible at Rocket League, but I have to admit it’s one of my favorite esports games out there. I usually don’t pay much attention to their winter events because it’s a game I only play once in a blue moon, but they really got me this time around. Rocket League is known for having some cool collabs (they even put our robot mascot Mr. Destructoid in there), but they outdid themselves by teaming up with the Lofi Girl

I am known to keep the “lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to” YouTube stream on pretty much 24/7, so I was pumped to see that she was part of the event this year. "What's so festive about the Lofi Girl?" you ask. Well, it's simple, the most important part of the holidays is feeling cozy, obviously. Nothing makes me feel cozier than bundling up with a warm cup of tea, a blanket, and some relaxing lofi beats. Okay, I'll admit this one's a bit of a stretch, but I love the collab so much I don't really care.

2. Apex Legends - Wintertide

Apex Legends is another entry in the battle royale genre that’s managed to stick around and make a name for itself, and while it’s another title that I don’t play, it has one of the coolest themed game modes I’ve ever seen. It basically works like this: there’s a train called the Winter Express that’s moving around the map to different stations, and players are pitted against other teams to board the train and capture it, like a big, moving control point. I always love a map that has moving elements, and the idea of fighting on and around a giant train set piece sounds amazing.

Apex does have the whole battle pass formula that I’m not too fond of, so getting their skins might be tedious for some, but I have to give points for the creativity of drawing upon holiday classic The Polar Express. With so many games jostling to stand out in a sea of other winter-themed modes, a high-speed battle set on a train has to be one of the coolest I’ve seen.

1. Animal Crossing - Toy Day

With all the other holiday events are out here with their fests and wonderlands, I can’t deny how much I love the bluntness of “Toy Day.” In the Animal Crossing world, it’s a day for receiving, opening, and playing with toys, and I have nothing but respect for that. When it comes to the actual event, it’s gotta be the best in terms of getting you involved and into the holiday spirit.

Not only do you have all the wintery outfits, furniture, and decorative items you could want, but you also have to plan ahead by purchasing gifts for each one of your villagers in the weeks leading up to Toy Day. Then when the day finally arrives, a reindeer named Jingle will visit your town, and after you complete a series of tasks for him, you give your villagers the gifts you so lovingly purchased and wrapped for them. What’s more, they’ll even gift you a gift in return as a token of their appreciation.

I know, I know, other games focus more on shooting at other players instead of being their friends and giving them gifts, so it’s not quite a fair comparison. But if we’re talking about what’s going to get me in the holiday spirit, nothing works better than a wholesome quest of giving my friends something that will make them feel special.

Epic Games agrees to pay $520 million in FTC settlement https://www.destructoid.com/epic-games-ftc-settlement-privacy-charges-520-million-news/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=epic-games-ftc-settlement-privacy-charges-520-million-news https://www.destructoid.com/epic-games-ftc-settlement-privacy-charges-520-million-news/#respond Mon, 19 Dec 2022 17:00:08 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=354874 Epic Fortnite

FTC complaint involved child privacy and unintended purchases

Fortnite developer Epic Games has announced today that it will pay a total of $520 million in a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. The total amount is accrued between two complaints, over privacy violations and tricking players into unintended purchases.

The FTC originally claimed that Epic violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, by collecting personal data from children without obtaining parental consent. Having voice and text chat on by default in the settings while matching these players with strangers also harmed children and teens, the FTC alleges.

The Commission also claims Epic deployed trickery to "dupe" players, causing them to make unintended purchases and blocking access to purchased content as an obstacle for disputing charges.

As part of a proposed federal court order, Epic will pay two penalties in the proposed settlement: $275 million for the privacy accusations, and $245 million to refund customers over the billing practices. Additionally, the FTC also calls for Epic to adopt strong default privacy settings for children and teens playing Fortnite. This includes an option for text and voice communication to be turned off by default, something Epic has already implemented for under-18 players, alongside setting party invite defaults to "invite only" and personalized recommendations to off. The text chat's mature language filter also defaults to "on" for players below the age of 16.

Settling down

Epic has also already rolled out an option called Cabined Accounts. This is a setting specifically for Epic Games accounts that will require parental consent for certain options, like making in-game purchases or using voice chat. Users can still play games like FortniteFall Guys, or Rocket League while cabined, but in "tailored" environment for younger users.

As for the shop, the FTC's allegations claim that Epic used "dark patterns" to trick players into making unwanted purchases. Confusing button configurations, charging account holders without authorization, and blocking access to purchased content are among the accusations. The $240 million portion of the Epic settlement will go towards player refunds over these issues. The order also bars Epic from blocking consumers from accessing their purchased content for disputing unauthorized charges.

"No developer creates a game with the intention of ending up here," said Epic in a statement. "The video game industry is a place of fast-moving innovation, where player expectations are high and new ideas are paramount. Statutes written decades ago don’t specify how gaming ecosystems should operate. The laws have not changed, but their application has evolved and long-standing industry practices are no longer enough. We accepted this agreement because we want Epic to be at the forefront of consumer protection and provide the best experience for our players."

The FTC also recently filed to block Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

This article has been updated to clarify Epic's privacy setting options within Fortnite.

Don't worry, I am here

Fortnite is getting another anime collaboration today, this time with some superpowered stars. Deku, Bakugo, Uraraka, and All Might from My Hero Academia arrive in Fortnite today with purchasable skins and cosmetics in the Item Shop.

Over in the Item Shop, the four aforementioned heroes are getting their own skins and special items. Midoriya's skin comes with an All Might Back Bling, for instance, while Bakugo's cosmetics are suitably explosive. There are emotes as well, featuring bits like Deku's tendency to take notes on heroes and All Might's cheerful laugh.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7O4UypFSp4

Even if the cosmetics aren't your thing, the My Hero Academia Fortnite collaboration is also shaking up the island. Special All Might-themed Supply Drops will be hitting the arena, and they can contain a little bit of Smash power to blast at opponents.

Plus, some new Creative and additional experiences are joining the game too. Completing the special quests will net you some cosmetics, while the Hero Training Gym offers a themed activity to take part in, much like the Hidden Leaf Village map for the Naruto crossover.

Going Plus Ultra

If you're unfamiliar with My Hero Academia, it started as a manga and has become a pretty popular modern anime series out right now. Set in a world where superpowers are real, My Hero follows Izuku Midoriya, a.k.a. Deku, on his journey to become a hero through attending U.A. High, taught by the heroic icon All Might and learning alongside childhood rival Bakugo, newfound friend Uraraka, and the rest of Class 1-A.

To boil it down further, it's got a lot of similarities to Sky High. But it's a pretty good series with some memorable characters, and a cool one to feature alongside previous Fortnite crossovers like Dragon Ball and Naruto. I'm hoping for more Shonen Jump series to make their way in, too.

The My Hero Academia Fortnite crossover event is live now. The special quests will run until December 29, 2022.

The walls are going up

This past weekend was a huge one for Epic Games juggernaut release, Fortnite — Not only did Season 2 Chapter 3 come to its conclusion via Saturday's earth-shaking "Fracture" event, but it was followed by the reveal of a litany of new content headed to the defining battle royale release. Hidden among all this excitement, however, was some important news for those who build 'n' brawl on PC via Windows.

As of Chapter 4 Season 2, The PC edition of Fortnite will be supported on Windows 10 only, with native official support halting on previous versions, including Windows 7 & 8. Speaking in a statement on its official blog Epic Games noted that, as the game moves forward into the next generation, the developer wishes to secure its future on more contemporary platforms, shutting down security loopholes on the older versions of the operating software.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXYxZySYeFU

And thus, all PC Fortnite players will be required to play on Windows 10 if they wish to play natively, and receive all future game support. As a workaround, those who are unable to upgrade will still be able to participate via cloud, through the Nvidia GeForce NOW game streaming service. Otherwise, moving to an alternate platform or pulling the trigger on a Windows 10 upgrade will be the only other options.

Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1 sees the multiplayer madness now rendered in the powerful Unreal 5.1 engine, bringing new levels of visual fidelity to the game. The PC edition has received an overhaul of its graphics options, allowing for higher settings in fields such as Global Illumination, Nanite Geometry, and Temporal Super Resolution — replacing the Temporal Anti-Aliasing option and offering better frame rates for sharper resolutions. If you are not tech-savvy, fear not, as an auto-setting option will be available to tune your rig to the best visual recommendation possible.

You can read more about the Chapter 3 Finale, as well as Chapter 4's incoming content in our previous reports. Fortnite is available now on PlayStation, PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms.

Another chapter, another season of skins to collect

Following yesterday's somewhat longwinded finale to the third chapter of Fortnite, the game is finally back online with Chapter 4 Season 1. At the end of the last chapter, spectators watched as the game's island was destroyed and then slowly reassembled. For Fortnite Chapter 4, that means getting to know this island from scratch once more. What locations are in? Which ones are out? And most importantly, what do I get if I buy the season pass this time?

Some of those questions are answered in the launch trailer below. As teased in the cinematic trailer released on Saturday, Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher is in, as is Doom Guy. My Hero Academia is getting some representation too with Izuku Midoriya. Also, dirt bikes. Lots and lots of dirt bikes.

That map looks like it'll be fun to explore though I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the days when there was a massive cliffside and waterfall right smack in the middle of it.

As for that season pass, Doom Guy is available starting on page 5 with the rest of the skins for the season belonging to original characters, including The Ageless. Geralt will get his own set of missions that'll unlock later this season.

With the update to Fortnite Chapter 4, current-gen graphics have arrived for the game. Even though I predominantly play on Xbox Series S, I can see some serious changes in how Unreal Engine 5.1 is handling the game. Especially the lighting. The lighting is gorgeous. In fact, I'm tempted to download it to my PS5 to see if there are further improvements my Series S isn't doing.

Now, we wait

Even if you don't play Fortnite, odds are you've heard of the Chapter 3 ending event: Fracture. It took place earlier today, and in a classic dramatic end-of-chapter fashion, a new island was forged.

Here's what happened!

[gallery link="file" columns="4" ids="352618,352619,352617,352616"]

The Chapter 3 Fracture event kicked off at 4:10PM ET

Although the predetermined start time was 4:00PM ET, there's a customary wait for events to actually kick off; which was also the case with Fracture (10 minutes, here). After queuing up, my party was warped to a very small island with a TV, which displayed a countdown ticker.

After the time was up, a cutscene played, which showcased The Herald (the big bad of this season) fighting a group of resistance members. Although it seemed like they were going to hold her at bay, she eventually prevailed after morphing into a gigantic T-1000 monster: and absorbed pretty much everything, the island included. Which uh, exploded.

Cue the actual event!

The island exploded, and a scavenger hunt to make a new one began

Paradigm, one of said resistance members, checked in to let us know that "home [was] gone;" but our group of four was thrust into a medium-ish hub zone with more players and were charged with forming a new island. We did that through various tasks, not unlike a puzzle platformer or action adventure game.

Said tasks included:

  • Finding Zero Point Fragments (orbs) around the hub, scavenger hunt style
  • Completing quests, like finding matching objects throughout the environment
  • Some puzzles/riddles, like locating objects that NPCs need, or finding/delivering other items of interest
  • Using tools (like grappling guns) to get around quicker

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW-KIbV9PRU

One really cool element of this event, if you were playing with other people, was the emphasis on teamwork. You could tackle puzzles in any order, and if you had already finished figuring something out, you could share those solutions ad hoc as the event raged on.

A scoreboard was present for party members for a bit of friendly competition, and at certain intervals, more pieces of the hub were added on: augmenting the level with more platforms and challenges. After 35 minutes (at around 4:45PM ET) a cutscene queued up, signaling that the group hunt was complete, and that we had found enough fragments to create/restore the island.

Behold, the new island for the next chapter of Fornite

Here's a shot of the new island from the end-of-the-event cutscene.

Of course, we can't actually explore it yet, as Fortnite's servers need to work some behind the scenes stuff beforehand. Expect the next season to kick off sometime in the early morning, US.

And that's it! I really enjoyed playing Fractured with a group, and coming up with the solutions to the hub's various puzzles on the fly. It definitely beats some of the more linear action-oriented end-of-chapter events thus far, and I'm hoping Epic builds on this idea the next time around. It felt like the makings of a Fornite single player game, really.

Fortnite Chapter 4 Season Pass teases/info

Based on the very end of the trailer above, two of the big season pass teases include

  • Geralt (The Witcher)
  • Doom Guy (The Bethesda aesthetic/era, complete with the Crucible sword)

The Incredible Hulk is also shown in the island-forming cutscene, riding a motorcycle, and Mr. Beast is teased as well.

Little Goody Two-Shoes himself

It's sure been a busy gaming year for Evil Dead's premier deadite slayer Ash Williams, not only has the chainsaw-bedecked smart-ass received his own brand new video game, but he is now joining the star-studded roster of Epic Games' juggernaut battle royale release, Fortnite.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-23660L8hAY

Ash, boomstick and all, is one of several additions to Fortnite's annual Halloween event — the amusingly titled "Fortnitemares".  This celebration of everything spooky and ooky kicks off across all platforms today, bringing with it themed maps, modes, characters, and weapons.  There will be a selection of free seasonal cosmetics dolled out to all players who partake in the event, with Ash Williams, Rick & Morty character Queen Summer, and the Meseeks — all arriving as paid DLC.  Look at Ash's cute doe-eyes.

Additionally, keep your eyes peeled for some Gothic-looking "Alteration Altars" that will be springing up around the island, as visiting one will grant your character some limited-time werewolf powers! Cursed players will be granted new "Howler Claw" attacks, as well as a lofty double jump ability and heightened animal senses, which will allow you to track your nearby opponents with ease.  If you hear a heartbeat on the soundtrack, then watch out, as it means one of the lycanthropic beasties is onto you.

Players completing an array of Fortnitemare Quests will also unlock fun weapons and gear, including the pumpkin launcher firearm, bone-based Back Bling, and skeletal gliders. New spoopy outfits are also available from the Fortnite store, including the very cool Sinister Glare and Undying Sorrow skins that were designed by contest winners @Dreowings and @kitsunexkitsu respectively.  All in all, there's a lot of scary stuff going on in the world of Fortnite, so fans should ensure that they get into the spirit of the season.

Fortnitemares kicks on today, October 18 and will run until November 1. For full details on the new update, check out the official Fortnite blog.

Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4 adds Spider-Gwen and a whole lotta chrome https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-season-4-spider-gwen-chapter-3/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fortnite-season-4-spider-gwen-chapter-3 https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-season-4-spider-gwen-chapter-3/#respond Sun, 18 Sep 2022 17:00:25 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=344970 Fortnite Season 4

Yes, I know her name is actually Ghost-Spider

The good vibes on the Fortnite island are disappearing–and frankly, good riddance. Early this morning, Epic Games updated the battle royale to Season 4: Paradise with some pretty significant changes made to the eastern side of the island. Several spots have been chromed out as this mysterious liquid slowly transforms everything in its path. Not only does this alter the look of certain locations but it also changes up the gameplay. The liquid chrome allows you to apparate through the walls of some buildings that, in theory, can set you up for a surprise attack. With the new Chrome Splash grenade, you can cover yourself and others in the goo for a short time, giving you the ability to turn into a chrome blob when you dash. In the few games I've played so far this season, being a blob makes it pretty easy to get the drop on opponents in those chromed-out areas. It's something that reminds me of Sand Tunneling from Chapter 2: Season 5.

New Season, New Battle Pass

Chapter 3 Season 3's island is probably the least I've liked the map since I've started playing Fortnite, so I'm glad some changes are here even if they're pretty small. What I'm far more excited about is this season's Battle Pass. The big-name draw this is Gwen Stacey, aka Ghost-Spider, aka Spider-Gwen. She sits atop the Battle Pass this season, but there are other characters you'll unlock along the way worth taking a look at. Specifically, Grriz. Grriz is a little bear just "kranging" it inside of a bigger bear that he controls with a game controller. That's a fantastic idea and I can't wait to unlock him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-TGoeJKYY8

While I've been playing Fortnite off and on for a few years now, this last season was the first time I actually put in the work to complete missions and gain enough XP to level up beyond the standard Battle Pass. With the selection of skins this time around, I can honestly see myself doing it all over this season.

The Dragon Ball x Fortnite event is underway, here’s how to finish the challenges https://www.destructoid.com/dragon-ball-x-fortnite-guide-heres-how-to-finish-the-challenges/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dragon-ball-x-fortnite-guide-heres-how-to-finish-the-challenges https://www.destructoid.com/dragon-ball-x-fortnite-guide-heres-how-to-finish-the-challenges/#respond Tue, 16 Aug 2022 15:30:10 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=339853 Dragon Ball x Fortnite 0

The first few Dragon Balls can be acquired today

Well, the teaser was sent out, and now the time has come: Dragon Ball is entering Fortnite. Here's how the Dragon Ball x Fortnite event works.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiOn8wQmiAk

Currently, Epic has implemented two big items into the mix:

  • Nimbus Cloud (an on-demand glider that lets you shoot into the air to glide with a cooldown timer, similar to other past items)
  • Kamehameha (an ability that's essentially an explosive beam, governed by a maximum of three charges)

You can find these items either through special vendors (Bulma at Kame House on the far east of the map in the island formation), "Dragon Ball" vending machines (marked on the map), or through capsules, which appear on the map like supply drops.

Another part of the event involves a hub zone (like Naruto) where you can watch Dragon Ball Super episodes, which runs through September 17, 2022. Of course, there's also skins to be bought too, including Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, and Beerus. Epic has a full rundown of the event here.

And a questline! So the goal is to collect a "power level" (read: XP on a separate track) of 120 million, which provides level-up bonuses for battle royale, as well as odds and end rewards. Separately, there's a "Dragon Ball" questline on the quest screen, which tasks players with collecting all seven Dragon Balls to unlock the Shenron Glider for free. As of publication you can acquire two now, and more will unlock each subsequent day for the next five days. You can find tips on how to easily finish the first few challenges below.

Dragon Ball x Fortnite 2

Dragon Ball x Fortnite Warmup Challenges:

Open Capsule Corp capsules

This one is simple. Just watch the map after roughly a minute, and you'll see capsule icons appear on the map. Head to the closest one and open them (they contain Nimbus Clouds and Kamehamehas).

Visit a familiar training location

Head to the location marked here: Kame House in the island formations. Done!

Purchase an item from a Dragon Ball vending machine

This one is easy as all vending machines will be marked on the map when highlighting this quest. You may need roughly 250 gold to buy an item (cloud or Kamehameha). Note that if you're low on gold, to buy an item that you need to complete the current quest for.

Destroy objects with a Kamehameha

Head to any named location to find more objects and unleash the Kamehameha (found with any of the methods mentioned above). The easiest way to do this is to find them in capsules. Note that you can only carry one of these at a time, so if you have one charge left, use it on some trees, then pick up another you just found on the floor.

Travel distance riding a Nimbus Cloud

Just grab a cloud, use it to leap up to a mountain, then glide off that mountain after the cooldown is refreshed. You'll finish the challenge in a few minutes.

Watch Dragon Ball Super in Dragon Ball Super Episode Festival

Just head to the main menu, go to the queue, and select any episode. Quit, and you'll clear the challenge.

Dragon Ball x Fortnite Sparring Practice Challenges:

Join a Versus Battle in different matches

"Versus Battles" are initiated through interacting with [bounty] signs with Goku and Vegeta on them. They'll start a battle with someone in your area. To finish this challenge, just highlight the quest, mark a versus board on your map, and interact with it: that counts as "joining." After finishing this quest there will be a stage two and three; all of which need to be completed in different matches. Be prepared to queue up a lot.

Damage an enemy player before taking damage in different matches

Land on a roof, find a gun, and tap someone real quick. You need to do this three times to finish the challenge.

Damage enemy players with the Kamehameha

This is one of the easiest challenges as the Kamehameha does full-life damage in just a few seconds. Line up a shot, preferably with a player who is already engaged with someone, and activate it. It should only take a few players to finish this challenge.

Win a Versus Battle

To finish this one, just enter as many versus battles as you can to increase your odds of winning one. It helps to immediately land at a versus battle sign and start them at the top of every match.

Looks like Dragon Ball is coming to Fortnite https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-dragon-ball-crossover-tease-reveal-news/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=fortnite-dragon-ball-crossover-tease-reveal-news https://www.destructoid.com/fortnite-dragon-ball-crossover-tease-reveal-news/#respond Thu, 11 Aug 2022 18:30:55 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=339131 Fortnite Dragon Ball

Goku may get a gun

A new crossover is headed to Epic Games' Fortnite, and it will rock the dragon. After a ton of rumors, chatter, and speculation, it looks like Dragon Ball is arriving in Fortnite.

The Fortnite Twitter account posted this ominous image of Shenron, the wish-granting dragon, today. "Speak," it says. "Name your wish..."

As for now, it's not clear what exactly this entails. More info looks to be arriving next week, on August 16.

https://twitter.com/FortniteGame/status/1557728549737443336

Speculation has run rampant over Dragon Ball arriving in Fortnite for a while. The leaker community around Epic's battle royale discovered a bunch of files that pointed towards skins and cosmetics, even including the Capsule Corp logo.

Rock the dragon

As for who's up, I think an obvious answer would be Goku. The same way you can't do Naruto and not include the major players, Goku and likely Vegeta are sound bets. I'd like some less obvious characters too, like Piccolo, Bulma, or Yamcha, but those would probably be relegated to a second pack, much like some of the Naruto options were.

I'm hoping for some kind of in-game event as well, whether it's another special map like the Hidden Leaf Village or possibly an in-game happening. King Kai willing, we get a Kamehameha weapon.

But I have to say, seeing some Dragon Ball content drop in Fortnite sounds pretty exciting. Growing up on Toonami instilled quite a bit of nostalgia for the series in me, and it was doubled, maybe even tripled, with the love letter that is Dragon Ball FighterZ.

So yes, I'm quite looking forward to August 16 and whatever it entails. Hopefully we'll all be able to finally learn who would win in a fight, John Cena or Goku. We'll just have to wait until next week to get that much closer to our answer.

AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA!

WWE, a company that has absolutely no need to point eyes in other directions right now, has revealed that it is teaming up with two major video game brands for a pair of brand new in-game promotions, that will see its ring-rocking superstars feature in Epic Games' Fortnite, Psyonix' Rocket League, and Mediatonic's Fall Guys.

Battle royale juggernaut Fortnite will soon be welcoming the presence of one of the industry's biggest and most successful all-time stars: The Doctor of Thuganomics, John Cena. Cena will be dropping onto the landing zone on all platforms July 29, kitted out with his trademark jorts, inflatable finger melee tool, WWE title "Back Bling," and iconic "You Can't C Me" taunt. Unfortunately, it does not appear that playing as Cena will afford you the ability to hit your opponents with the Attitude Adjustment.

I expect Cena to be banned from online play almost immediately given his natural camouflage abilities.

For those of you who prefer your battle arts of the vehicular persuasion, then Rocket League is also currently feeling the pro-wrestling vibe. From July 28, players can purchase brand-new octane decals for their road rippers of choice. The two new designs are styled after the color schemes and shirt logos of both John Cena and the current Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns.

The WWE SummerSlam Octane Decal Bundle will retail for 500 credits.

Finally, over in the cutesy bean-bashing world of Fall Guys, three new costumes are headed to the in-game store. These outfits are stylized after three top WWE stars: The video game-lovin' Xavier Woods, legendary deadman The Undertaker, and yer boy Moyse's favorite, Asuka. These three skins will be available to purchase within Fall Guys during this week's "Blundermania" promotion, which will take place between July 28 and August 1.

Neil Druckmann shuts down The Last of Us / Fortnite crossover rumor https://www.destructoid.com/the-last-of-us-fortnite-crossover-rumor-neil-druckmann-shuts-down-naughty-dog/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-last-of-us-fortnite-crossover-rumor-neil-druckmann-shuts-down-naughty-dog https://www.destructoid.com/the-last-of-us-fortnite-crossover-rumor-neil-druckmann-shuts-down-naughty-dog/#respond Tue, 26 Jul 2022 14:30:52 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/?p=336418 last of us fortnite rumor crossover

Ellie won't be dropping anywhere anytime soon

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann has put paid to recent rumors that the stars of his critically acclaimed adventure series The Last of Us are getting set to make an appearance in Epic Games' battle royale juggernaut, Fortnite.

While Fortnite is already chockful of crossover stars, skins, and other items pulled from comics, TV shows, movies, and other media, Druckmann stated that recent whisperings that Joel, Ellie, and other TLoU-related assets were headed to the drop zone are simply false, despite being noted by some very prominent and typically accurate leakers within Fortnite's massive and dedicated community.

"Love me some Fortnite… but there are no plans for this," stated Druckmann on Twitter. "False rumor."

https://twitter.com/Neil_Druckmann/status/1551301460805033984?s=20&t=wk4tKjo5HZAYSkxDOYWcMQ

Despite the clear tonal difference between the two franchises, the crossover seemed more than plausible, given that Fortnite has already played host to other Sony PlayStation stars such as Nathan Drake and Chloe Frazer from the Uncharted games/movie, God of War's axe-wielding monster Kratos, and the intrepid Aloy from Guerrilla Games' Horizon series.

For now, however, our mushroom-mashing survivalists will be remaining in Boston, preparing to relive their original nightmare in the upcoming remake The Last of Us Part I which launches on PS5 September 2. You can check out a very impressive-looking gameplay trailer in our previous article.

Fortnite is available right now on PlayStation PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms.
