It'll be a Riot

It won't be too long before League of Legends has its own Netflix series alongside the many other video game adaptations on the service. A new teaser today announced that Arcane will arrive this fall.

Announced during Riot's 10-year anniversary stream, Arcane is a new animated series that is about two "iconic League champions," and the power that will eventually tear them apart. Following a delay last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, today we got confirmation that Arcane is coming to Netflix and a glimpse of the action, including what looks like current League of Legends champions Jinx and Vi.

Netflix has had no shortage of video game adaptations making their way to the service. Dota: Dragon's Blood has already been locked in for a second season, Castlevania is gearing up for its final season this month (though more could be on the way), and a CGI Resident Evil arrives later this year.

With the world of Runeterra soon joining them, there's plenty of streaming series to go around. Hopefully a firm date's on the way for League's foray into the world of animated series.

All good things must come to a bloody end

Netflix's Castlevania series is set to air its next season in May, and it will also be its finale. One report indicates that it might not be the end for the Castlevania universe on the service, however.

Following a promo art reveal, Netflix posted a new trailer on Twitter, saying the final season of Castlevania will arrive on May 13.

Though the story of Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades, and Alucard may be coming to a close, Netflix may not be done with Castlevania as a whole. Deadline reports that it hears Netflix is eyeing a "new series set in the same Castlevania universe with an entirely new cast of characters."

There's certainly no shortage of Belmonts to pull from, or even other games in the series without a Belmont in the lead. (Soma Cruz, anyone?) Hopefully this report means Castlevania will continue on in some manner, though. The series has been pretty great so far, and as Netflix continues to pick up more video game adaptations like The Witcher, Dota: Dragon's Blood, and Resident Evil, it'd be nice to still see one of the series that laid the groundwork keep going.

For now though, I just hope the heroic trio of Castlevania protagonists gets a happy ending. After what happened to Alucard at the end of season three, he could use a reprieve.

Dota: Dragon’s Blood is worth a watch, even if you don’t play https://www.destructoid.com/dota-dragons-blood-is-worth-a-watch-even-if-you-dont-play/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dota-dragons-blood-is-worth-a-watch-even-if-you-dont-play https://www.destructoid.com/dota-dragons-blood-is-worth-a-watch-even-if-you-dont-play/#respond Mon, 29 Mar 2021 20:30:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/dota-dragons-blood-is-worth-a-watch-even-if-you-dont-play/

Do you love me?

One of the best things I can say about Dota: Dragon's Blood, the latest animated video game adaptation to hit Netflix, is that it's completely watchable for newcomers. In just eight episodes, it manages to cover a breadth of lore and overcome other adaptations' stumbling blocks, largely thanks to its characters.

Dota's impermeability can be a boon, as its mechanical complexity has kept players—myself included—playing for literal decades. The lore, on the other hand, isn't as tightly woven into the game's framework. It's largely relegated to item descriptions and hero bios, and over the course of thousands of hours of Dota 2, I don't know that I've ever stopped during a match to read about how the Heaven's Halberd I just bought from the shop got its name.

It's refreshing, then, that Dota: Dragon's Blood makes very few assumptions. Yes, there are plenty of callbacks and cameos that will appeal specifically to people who have spent hours upon hours in the Dota 2 client. But at its core, it's also a solid fantasy setting that, most importantly, has room to grow.

Dragon's Blood starts out with the basics of Dota 2. There is the primordial mind, split into Dire and Radiant, that will eventually involve the cosmos in its battle. There are fundamental elements, ancient dragons, and literal gods that roam the land. Most of this early table setting is to inform you that yes, the world of Dota is magical, but there are also a lot of normal humans who get caught up in it.

Davion, an up-and-coming Dragon Knight who travels to different towns and cities to deal with any dragons terrorizing the locals, serves as the more grounded viewpoint. He's talented but human, or at least he is until his blood mixes with the ancient eldwurm (the oldest and most powerful kind of dragon around) Slyrak's, fusing the two together. The ensuing discovery of new powers, and their terrifying consequences, serve as a human basis to the story.

Mirana embodies the other half of the story, as a loyal attendant of the dark moon goddess Selemene who is searching for a rebel elven girl—Fymryn—who stole some of the goddess' lotus flowers. The ensuing conflict can get muddy in using too many proper names and places, but it's a standard story of the loyal followers of two different deities waging war on one another, with both Mirana and Fymryn seeking a resolution that benefits their side.

Both have their reasons to fight, though Fymryn's story of loss and revenge is a bit stronger than Mirana's quest to return to Selemene's good graces. One of the larger stumbling blocks in this first season is that Selemene is characterized as a goddess that mends the broken, instilling unyielding obsession for her in the process; yet we rarely see the kinder side of Selemene. She's frequently scheming and manipulating, and one scene in particular—where she chides her general Luna for committing an atrocity she gently encouraged—made me wonder how Mirana manages to stay on that side of the conflict.

The heart of the story, and the real surprise of the series thus far, is the Invoker. In Dota 2, he's a boastful mage who gained renown for memorizing a litany of spells. Where most talented mages can master three or four spells in the course of their life, Invoker has an arsenal of magic at his disposal.

Dota: Dragon's Blood expanding on Invoker's backstory and history, with both the world and with specific characters like Selemene, is where it really shines. In flashbacks, he's shown as both the intense scholar and as a doting father, and his tireless efforts to cure his daughter of an unspecified illness explain his cold demeanor in the present. I never really thought the posterboy of toxic mid-lane players would be my favorite character in the animated series, but well, here we are. Invoker's story is well-told, and his place as both the behind-the-scenes manipulator and grieving father is a highlight.

There are also plenty of fights, and with Studio Mir—known for its work on, among other series, The Legend of Korra—animating them, it should be no surprise that they're excellent. What's impressive is the breadth of battles that happen: everything from a clash between an eldwurm and the superpowered Dragon Knight Kaden to small bouts where Mirana's bodyguard Marci gets to flex her impressive martial arts skills form a wide range of action sequences.

There's a special kind of excitement in seeing a Dota hero's abilities animated so well. During one fight late in the series, I was genuinely excited when the demonic Terrorblade—a demon so bad that hell made another hell just for him—used his Reflection ability and seemed to Metamorph mid-fight. Mirana's Starfall is fittingly dangerous, and I have a newfound appreciation for Luna's Lunar Beams and Eclipse, which are essentially the fantasy version of an orbital ion cannon.

Even if you don't get giddy about seeing a Gem of True Sight, there's still a lot to enjoy about Dota: Dragon's Blood. Alongside Invoker, Fymryn's character arc has a strong start and leaves her as another presumptive protagonist for future seasons. The jokes don't always land—Marci's expressions got the most laughs from me, and despite never speaking a word in the first season, she still ends up being one of the more memorable side characters.

Really, this first season is a foundation. By the end of Book 1, the party has been split in disparate directions enough to explore the world at large, and that's likely to be the more exciting content. The world of Dota is filled with some real wild characters—giant spiders and centaurs, living rocks and trees, a Greek god, and a gnarly butcher to name a few—and I'm hopeful future seasons find some time for one-shots to delve into the side content.

Pacing is the one major issue, as some storylines drag on a bit as characters move into place or dialogue wears on. The scene where Davion is arguing with the other eldwurms in the spiritual plane drags, and hampers the urgency of what's happening in the corporeal world.

Where it's at, though, Dota: Dragon's Blood is off to a good start. It's not quite Castlevania, but it's thankfully not Dragon's Dogma either. Pacing issues aside, there's a fair bit to enjoy in Dragon's Blood's relatively short runtime, and it leaves off on a strong note. If you've ever been interested in the lore behind the game, or just in seeing some cool magic and gorgeous Studio Mir-animated battles, Dota: Dragon's Blood is approachable and entertaining, with room to grow.

Six degrees of Fred Ward

In today's contest you can win a Blu-ray copy of Tremors from Arrow Video!

Usually I introduce this kind of stuff and try to take it seriously. You can probably find LOTS of evidence to the contrary, but shut up I don't care. I'm a Professional Internet Writer, damn it, DAD! I mean, readers!

Ahem. So today we're giving away Arrow Video's release of Tremors on Blu-ray, and instead of wasting your time telling you what the movie's about (it's a comedy/horror film where giant underground worms terrorize a small Nevada town) I'm going to waste your time telling you about why I chose this movie.

Again, you can find more about the movie elsewhere. Chances are if you're here, you already know about it. So I'm instead going to spin a yarn about how I've seen this (and its sequel) roughly 100 times.

Back in the summer of sixth grade, I had a TV in my room because I was mature and cool. At some point during the dog days of summer, I lost the remote to my TV while it was stuck on the USA Network. I guess they had just acquired the rights to air Tremors 1 and 2, so they did just that. All the time. Like, all fucking summer. In between airings of Monday Night Raw and reruns of Wings, they were spamming these movies hardcore. I couldn't change the channel!

Much like A Christmas Story I've never actually seen this movie in one sitting, front to back. But I've seen various bits of it enough times to be able to stitch it all together in my mind.

Wasn't that pointless?! Enter to win your copy by using the widget below. Click around and blah blah blah. Also hit up the new and improved Flixist to double your odds.

We have one copy of the film to give away; we'll draw winners next week. Since this is a physical prize, you must have a United States shipping address in order to win.

Check out Tremors and other great Blu-ray releases over at MVD Entertainment.

They're good, but also bad

Today's contest features a Blu-ray copy of dark comedy Good Boys.

Superbad was pretty great. Human bird Michael Cera and holy-shit-how'd-he-become-a-legitimate-actor Jonah Hill had great chemistry, and the elements really just came together to make this special comedy. Good news! A bunch of people who worked on it are at it again.

Good Boys just hit Blu-ray and digital a few weeks ago, and we've got a copy to give away!

I'm a bad boy and can't seem to summarize this on my own, so read a description from the studio.

Just how bad can one day get? The creative minds behind Superbad and Sausage Party take on sixth grade hard in this innocent yet raunchy comedy. 12-year-olds Max, Thor, and Lucas decide to skip school in an attempt to learn how to kiss in time for a kissing party. Their odyssey of epically bad decisions involves some accidentally stolen drugs, frat-house paintball, and running from both the cops and terrifying teenage girls!

Rated R - for strong crude sexual content, drug and alcohol material, and language throughout - all involving tweens.

From what I hear it's pretty funny, so get in on the fun!

To enter to win, use the widget below to leave your name and email address. You can enter daily. Click around in the widget for ways to gain bonus entries! It's more fun when you don't know what to expect.

We have one Blu-ray to give away between Dtoid and Flixist; winner will be drawn Thursday, December 5. As this is a physical prize, you must have a United States shipping address in order to win.

Good Boys is available now on digital, and on Blu-ray wherever movies are sold.

These birds need to cool it

We've got a copy of The Angry Birds Movie 2 up for grabs in today's contest!

The only cell phone games I've ever really played were early versions of Snake on flip phones (puke) and the occasional Picross-style puzzle game on my current phone. How the hell the industry blew up like it did is beyond me, but most things these days are. It's a consequence of getting older, for sure.

One of the biggest successes from mobile games is definitely Angry Birds. So big is the franchise that we're on the second feature-length film based on the games! That's crazy. So let's give this copy of The Angry Birds Movie 2 away and download some free-to-play games on our phones as it plays in the background, like a good modern human!

I accidentally flung my ability to summarize movies too far, so I'll let you read this press material about the movie real quick.

The flightless angry birds and the scheming green piggies take their beef to the next level in THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2! When a new threat emerges that puts both Bird and Pig Island in danger, Red (Jason Sudeikis), Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride), and Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage) recruit Chuck's sister Silver (Rachel Bloom) and team up with pigs Leonard (Bill Hader), his assistant, Courtney (Awkwafina), and techpig, Garry (Sterling K. Brown), to forge an unsteady truce and form an unlikely super team to save their homes.

That new threat they're talking about? GLOBAL WARMING. That's right, I said it. Good luck with that one, piggies and birds.

To enter to win your copy, leave your name and email in the widget below. You can enter daily. For bonus entries, follow Dtoid and Flixist on Twitter, and share our contest post with your friends.

While you're waiting, tell us why these birds are so damned angry. I know I ask you to do this every time we bring up Angry Birds, but I still don't have a solid answer. Someone, end the madness. Please.

We have one Blu-ray copy of the film to give away between Dtoid and Flixist. You must have a United States shipping address in order to win -- winner will be drawn Monday, November 18.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 is available digitally, and at retail wherever movies are sold.

Spin-off mania!

Today's contest puts a Blu-ray copy of Hobbs & Shaw up for grabs!

I think I watched the first three Fast & Furious movies, but lost track somewhere around Fast & Furious in Space 2. They've really made a lot of those movies at this point. The good news is, they've embraced the full-on action aspects of the whole thing and actually look like a really good time, these days.

So, they're already on spin-offs! For what it's worth, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are great, and look like they have a ton of chemistry in this one. So, give Hobbs & Shaw a chance and enjoy some good old-fashioned, action-oriented car porn!

Someone sped off with my ability to summarize movies, so I'm going to paste in some press info and get over into the merge lane.

For years, hulking lawman Luke Hobbs and lawless outcast Deckard Shaw have traded smack talk and body blows. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton Lorr (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever, Hobbs and Shaw must partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves. Joining the cast as Shaw's sister Hattie, Vanessa Kirby.

"Hobbs & Shaw" sounds like a comic strip from the 80s/90s. I'd totally read it.

To enter to win, use the widget below to leave your name and email address. You can enter daily. For bonus entries, follow Dtoid and Flixist on Twitter, and share our contest post with your friends.

While you're waiting, which Fast & Furious movie is your favorite? Tell us all about your favorite movies, scenes, moments, or cars. Oh, so many cars.

We have one Blu-ray copy to give away between Dtoid and Flixist. Winner will be drawn Monday, November 11; you must have a United States address to win.

Hobbs & Shaw is available on digital storefronts, and wherever movies are sold.

What's a motto with you?

Today's contest features a Blu-ray copy of The Lion King -- come win it!

The original Lion King is definitely one of those big, epic animated films that really dominated the early part of my childhood. I of course loved Disney movies back then, but man the detail in the animation, the songs, the plot -- it all came together perfectly to make this really amazing movie that I can still watch to this day.

Disney's been trying to recreate the magic lately with semi live action remakes of old hand-animated movies. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Dumbo all had their shot -- now it's Simba's turn!

I'm not going to waste a ton of time pasting in press info or talking about the movie too much. Unless you just woke up from a very long coma and are now a caveman lawyer, you probably know all about The Lion King. Simba is, like, The Lion Prince and his The Lion Uncle is super jelly about that, so he The Lion Murders The Lion King and vanishes The Lion Prince to The Lion Wilderness. From there, The Lion Prince meets some pals and embarks on The Lion Journey to claim The Lion Throne as The Lion King.

It's pretty good! And now that it's all new and stuff, you don't have to feel like your grandpa watching stuff from the '90s that didn't even have big, fancy computer animation. Suck it, '90s!

There are demons in all of us

Celebrate the spooky season by winning a Blu-ray copy of psychological thriller The Dead Center.

Halloween is my favorite holiday -- it's just so much better than all the others. There's dressing up and scary things and candy, and everyone just has a good time getting all creeped out. And one of my favorite traditions of the season is watching a horror every night...or at least trying. It's hard to fully commit as an adult.

So, I'm going to help you celebrate my way by sending you a free copy of psychological thriller The Dead Center! It looks appropriately creepy, so we're off to a good start!

I've been banned from summarizing movies in seventeen countries, so I'll just paste in some press release stuff for you.

WHEN JOHN DOE ROSE FROM THE DEAD, HE BROUGHT SOMETHING BACK.

When a very dead suicide victim (Jeremy Childs, Preacher, Nashville) disappears from the morgue, it sets in motion a chain of events that has the power to immolate everything, and everyone, it touches.

Troubled psychiatrist Daniel Forrester (Shane Carruth, Primer, Upstream Color) is drawn to help a mysterious patient who is brought to the emergency psych ward in a catatonic state with no memory of how he reached the hospital. As if to exorcise his own demons, the doctor feverishly tries to break through to his mysterious patient. But as a spate of mysterious deaths shake the ward to its core, Forrester comes to suspect that there is more to his new ward than meets the eye. As he comes to realise what he's unleashed, a desperate race against the forces of evil threatens to swallow him whole.

I hate it when I accidentally unleash demons into hospitals. It's the worst!

Go Hamm on your Slinky, dawg

We've got a Blu-ray copy of Toy Story 4 to give out, so come win it!

Toy Story 3 made me cry. Legit. It's really good. But since I don't like crying at movies, I decided I was going to skip any more entries in the series lest I wind up being a blubbering, emotional mess at all times. I'm known as a Really Tough And Strong Manly Man around these parts, so I gotta keep up appearances.

If you're cool with getting emotional over animated movies, then good news! I've got a Blu-ray copy of Toy Story 4 to throw at you. So grab them tissues and get to leaking from your face holes, people.

So in this fourth entry of the Pixar series (man, time flies) Woody, Buzz, and some of the other classic characters find themselves with a new child to make happy. This, of course, results in shenanigans because these toys can't seem to no get into trouble. They'll meet new friends in a carnival, some weird dummies in an antique store, and even run into an old friend in their journey to make a spoon feel like a good toy. I'm sure they'll do a good job, and I'm sure you'll cry at the end.

I'm tired of crying, damn it. So just tell me if it was good after you win it.

To enter to win a copy, drop your name and email address using the widget below. You can enter daily. For bonus entries, follow Dtoid and Flixist on Twitter and share our contest post with your friends.

While you're waiting, tell us what last made you cry. Entertainment-wise, that is. Don't roll up in here talking about losing your dog, because that's way too heavy for me right now. Keep it focusing on movies, games, movies, or books here, people.

We have one Blu-ray copy of the movie to give out between entrants from Dtoid and Flixist. You must have a United States shipping address in order to win. Winner will be drawn Monday, October 14.

Toy Story 4 is available now at major retailers, and basically anywhere Disney sends movies to.

Contest: The Dead Don’t Die, and neither do our giveaways https://www.destructoid.com/contest-the-dead-dont-die-and-neither-do-our-giveaways/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=contest-the-dead-dont-die-and-neither-do-our-giveaways https://www.destructoid.com/contest-the-dead-dont-die-and-neither-do-our-giveaways/#respond Mon, 09 Sep 2019 22:30:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/contest-the-dead-dont-die-and-neither-do-our-giveaways/

This counts as a zombie land, right?

Today's contest sees the dead rise again in a Blu-ray copy of The Dead Don't Die.

Man, zombies just don't die. I mean, they do kinda, but I meant the zombie genre. In both movies and gaming it's still going pretty strong, despite being a major source of entertainment for many, many moons now. The internet really helped the zombie boom, and I guess it's here to stay. Until Mom stops paying the internet bill, that is.

Speaking of bills, Bill Murray is in another zombie movie! We've got a copy of The Dead Don't Die to give away, so pry it out of my cold, undead hands.

Wow, this one has a ton of stars in it. Like, a whole lot. Adam Driver and Bill Murray pilot this thing,  but man look at that cast. Crazy. Anyway, Jim Jarmusch's horror/comedy/satire has a plot synopsis, so read it so I don't have to figure out how to rewrite it!

In the sleepy small town of Centerville, something is not quite right. The moon hangs large and low in the sky, the hours of daylight are becoming unpredictable, and animals are beginning to exhibit unusual behaviors. No one quite knows why. News reports are scary and scientists are concerned. But no one foresees the strangest and most dangerous repercussion that will soon start plaguing Centerville: The Dead Don't Die - they rise from their graves and savagely attack and feast on the living, and the citizens of the town must battle for their survival.

From writer-director Jim Jarmusch (Paterson, Gimme Danger) comes a star-studded horror comedy featuring an ensemble cast of Jarmusch regulars (Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, Iggy Pop, Steve Buscemi, Tom Waits) and newcomers to the fold (Selena Gomez, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones, Carol Kane) in a raucous, rueful and satirical glimpse at American habits and desires at the end of the world - a comically terrifying state of the nation addressed in a true cinematic original.

There's a road called Centerville right now the street from me. Maybe it's cursed!

To enter to win, use the widget below to leave your name and email address. You can enter daily. For bonus entries, follow Dtoid and Flixist on Twitter and share our contest post with your friends.

While you're waiting, tell us in the comments just why the dead refuse to die. Why are they so persistent on reanimating, shambling around, and biting us when we're just trying to have a nice pee in the park? It's rude.

We have one Blu-ray copy of the film to give out between Dtoid and Flixist. You must have a United States shipping address to qualify. Our winner will be drawn on Friday, September 13.

The Dead Don't Die releases September 10 on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital. You can buy it wherever movies are sold.

I make this suit look good

In this contest, you can win Men in Black: International on Blu-ray, as well as a matching poster from Mondo!

Physical prizes, ho! Giving away actual, tangible objects is one of my favorite things, so today I've got a double dose of things you can actually touch. Who doesn't like touching?

We've got a Blu-ray copy of Men in Black: International, as well as an MiB poster from mother effing Mondo to give away. Mondo is the best, so I'm pretty stoked about this one!

Ok read this while I make some coffee.

Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Endgame) and Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok) join forces to take on an apocalyptic alien threat in director F. Gary Gray’s (The Fate of the Furious) exciting globetrotting adventure MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL, debuting on Digital August 20 and on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on September 3, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Joining Hemsworth and Thompson is an all-star supporting cast that includes Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible -Fallout), Rafe Spall (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), international dance phenoms Les Twins (Laurent Bourgeois & Larry Bourgeois) with Emma Thompson (Late Night) and Liam Neeson (Taken).

The Men in Black have always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe. In this new adventure, they tackle their biggest, most global threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organization.

How protecting the entire Earth wasn't international enough in the first three movies is a mystery, but whatever. This one has French dancing twins, so I guess that makes all the difference.

Anyway, look at this poster!

Men in Black International contest Mondo poster win

Mondo rules.

To enter to win, use the widget below to leave your name and email address. You can enter daily. For bonus entries, follow Dtoid and Flixist on Twitter and share our contest post with your friends.

In the meantime, tell us what else could possibly separate this movie from being any more international than the original films. Maybe because Hemsworth is from Australia? Who knows.

We have one prize bundle, including a Blu-ray copy of the film and this limited Mondo poster, to give out between Dtoid and Flixist. You must have a United States shipping address in order to qualify. Winner will be drawn on Friday, September 13.

Men in Black: International is available to buy wherever movies are sold, and be sure to check out Mondo for this poster and other cool movie and game related merch.

Gerry is displeased

To those keeping up with news about Netflix's upcoming Witcher adaptation, this latest bit of news shouldn't surprise you. At San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, The Wrap caught up with Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (showrunner for Netflix's adaptation) and asked what would happen once the series ran out of material from the books. Would the video games by CD Projekt be getting adapted after? "Extreme long vision is no," Hissrich stated, "we will not start adapting the games."

Continuing on, Hissrich said, "I can only attack one season at a time, I'm so excited for this one, the rest kind of makes my mind explode right now. If someone says 'what happens in Season 7,' sure I have thoughts. Fingers crossed, we get there." So while there may be some original material down the line if the show lasts long enough, we definitely won't be getting a new take on the recent game trilogy.

While that may be disappointing to fans of what CD Projekt has done, I certainly respect the decision. So often in media, we retell the same stories ad nauseum that it becomes pointless to even engage in multiple versions of it. While it's clearly fine to adapt the same storylines over different mediums, bringing something new to the established lore and characters does a lot more than just retreading water.

So similarities in appearance aside, The Witcher on Netflix will not be a game adaptation.

Superman is looking good

After months of speculation, Netflix has unveiled a teaser trailer for its upcoming adaptation of The Witcher. Revealed during San Diego Comic-Con today, we now have an idea of what Cavill and co will look like in motion for when the series finally does arrive. Honestly, he seems apt for the part. I know his turn as Superman in the recent DCEU films wasn't the best, but Cavill seems to be better suited for playing a mostly stoic figure than I gave him credit for.

Along with that, the costume design doesn't look half bad. I suppose all the hub-bub about the pre-production shot of Cavill was for naught. Netflix seems to be pulling out all the stops here and the series looks to authentically recreate what CD Projekt did with its games. Now hopefully the overly serious tone of this trailer lightens up a bit because The Witcher series at least understands when to lighten the mood some.

We still don't have an exact date for when the series will hit the streaming service, but everything is on track for its planned 2020 release.

IT HAS BEGUN

Everything is looking good for the upcoming Mortal Kombat film reboot. In addition to casting an excellent star in The Raid's Joe Taslim, screenwriter Greg Russo has confirmed that the movie will be an R-rated venture. Not only that, but fatalities will play a part in the film.

That's a pretty big deal. While fans have a fondness for the old MK film, it was seriously gimped by its PG-13 rating. I understand the time period was different (and there was no way a studio was funding an R-rated film where people would be getting bisected in the 90s), but it would have been so great to have a better representation of the game on film. I don't necessarily believe the movie needs to be as gory as the recent games, but just some acknowledge of the trademark "fatalities" would go a long way in paying reverence to the source material.

While we still don't have an official name for the movie, whatever form Mortal Kombat takes is on track for a March 2021 release. Expect a bloody good time.

In Us we trust

We've got a Blu-ray copy of Jordan Peele's Us to give away -- come enter our contest to nab it!

Jordan Peele is kind of on fire right now. His debut feature, Get Out, drew in accolades left and right (and made some decent money in the process). His follow-up, Us, had some big shoes to fill. I think it did just fine for itself.

You can win a Blu-ray copy by entering today's contest! Just don't blame us when you can't sleep.

Read some official press!

Set along the North California coastline, Adelaide Wilson (Nyong'o) reluctantly returns to her beachside childhood home with her family and finds that she is haunted by unresolved trauma from her past along with a string of eerie coincidences. As darkness falls after a tense day at the beach, the Wilsons discover four figures standing in their driveway. They soon realize this is only the beginning of their troubles as they find that the four figures are terrifying and uncanny opponents: doppelgangers of themselves.

I think the less we say about this one, the better.

To enter to win, use the widget below to leave your name and email address. You can enter daily for additional chances to win. For bonus entries, follow Dtoid and Flixist on Twitter and share our contest post with your friends.

While you're waiting, tell us about your doppelganger. Mine is the dastardly Wes Burritos, a shame to both the family and to mankind. He sucks. Don't listen to him.

We have one Blu-ray to give away between Dtoid and Flixist. You must have a United States shipping address in order to win. Winner will be drawn on Monday, June 24.

Us is available now on digital and Blu-ray.

Joint venture between the two companies

After a short bit on The Division 2, Ubisoft announced that a film will be coming to Netflix in the future. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain, this is a joint venture between the two companies to expand the world of The Division beyond gaming. Deadpool 2 director David Leitch will helm the film with the story focusing on Manhattan from the first Division title.

That's literally all we know right now. I'm not sure if The Division is the series I would have adapted into a film, but the setting is rich for human drama and political intrigue...well, if you wanted to make a political statement, that is.

That's way past cool

The internet has been filled with negativity over the Sonic the Hedgehog movie after yesterday's trailer reveal. While not everyone hated the more realistic design of the blue blur, enough people were causing a stink for Paramount Studios to take notice. Just this afternoon on Twitter, Sonic director Jeff Fowler gave a message to fans that the team over at Paramount would be re-designing the character to make him "the BEST he can be."

While I wasn't angry over the design of Sonic, I do have to question why the change was even necessary. It's hard to know when Sonic the Hedgehog entered production, but a quick look at WB's Detective Pikachu shows that you can make a live-action adaptation that honors the source material instead of warping it beyond recognition. Did nobody on the production staff think that Sonic's design may have missed the mark?

Whatever the case, it seems fan complaints haven't fallen on deaf ears. There's no mention if the film will be delayed from its November date, but at least we won't need to fear for our lives when it does finally come out.

Contest: Win a Blu-ray copy of Arrow Video’s Scared Stiff https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-arrow-videos-scared-stiff/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-arrow-videos-scared-stiff https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-arrow-videos-scared-stiff/#respond Wed, 01 May 2019 22:30:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-arrow-videos-scared-stiff/

Is that horror movie in your pants, or are you just happy to see me?

Attention '80s kids: Enter our contest for a Blu-ray copy of Arrow Video's Scared Stiff!

I probably don't need to tell you why I love '80s horror, but I will anyway -- long story short, it's the practical effects. Computer-generated stuff is cool and all, and provides a way to make things look really, really cool, but man there's nothing like good old-fashioned prosthetics and makeup. It makes effects look somehow realer than a computer ever could.

That's why I'm excited to give out 1987's Scared Stiff!

It's an '80s horror movie, so there's not much by way of plot. A mother, her son, and her boyfriend move into a really old home. But oh shit! It's haunted! Or something. I don't know, lil homie discovers a talisman or something in the basement and then all hell breaks loose. Does it really need to get any more descriptive than that? There's lots of gore and makeup and weird creatures and tribal dancing (?), so pretty much you're either into this sort of thing -- like me -- or you're waiting for me to give away a VHS of The English Patient.

And I am not doing that again.

To enter to win, comment below by typing something totally random. If you're on a smartphone, type in the words, "I want a," and autofill a sentence using the first recommended word. It's always a fun little exercise!

We have two Blu-rays to give away. Winners will be drawn on Tuesday, April 7. Make sure to comment using a Dtoid account with your current email address on file. New users can sign up here to get in on the RNG fun!

Scared Stiff is available now from our friends at MVD Entertainment. Head over to Flixist for more chances to win!

That iguana sounds pretty dope

Enter today's contest to win a Blu-ray copy of Arrow Video's The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire!

What I like about these movie contest partnerships with MVD Entertainment is I get to see a bunch of weird stuff I'd have probably never heard of. Today's movie is one of those -- The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire is a '70s giallo that's self-indulgent, even for the self-indulgent genre. I'd like to think that describes me pretty well.

So, we've got some copies up for grabs. Come grab one!

Read this!

One of several "animal-in-the-title" cash-ins released in the wake of Dario Argento's box-office smash The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire is a gloriously excessive giallo that boasts a rogues gallery of perverse characters; violent, fetishized murders, and one of the genre's most nonsensical, red-herring laden plots (which sees almost every incidental character hinted at potentially being the killer). Set in Dublin (a rather surprising giallo setting), Iguana opens audaciously with an acid-throwing, razor-wielding maniac brutally slaying a woman in her own home. The victim's mangled corpse is discovered in a limousine owned by Swiss Ambassador Sobiesky and a police investigation is launched, but when the murdering continues and the ambassador claims diplomatic immunity, tough ex-cop John Nortonis brought in to find the killer...

My favorite part of these kinds of movies is how pulpy they are. Also the murderer both has a razor blade and throws acid for no apparent reason. It's silly, and it's fun.

To enter to win your copy, comment below telling us what ridiculous combination of weaponry you'd use if you were a deranged serial killer in 1970s Dublin. I'd use shoelaces to strangle my enemies (and also carry my school books around) and a plastic straw to poison the Earth, resulting in my enemies' inevitable death! I know I'd probably have to wait a while for the plastic straw thing to work out, but dude it's gonna be so worth it when they're all like, "Oh shit I'm dying because of a plastic straw in the ocean, help me!!!" and I'm like, "Yeah, I did that."

We have two Blu-rays to give away. Since this is a physical prize, you must have a United States shipping address in order to win. Winners will be drawn on Tuesday, April 30. New users can sign up here and describe their miraculously stupid murder weapons!

The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire is available now from MVD Entertainment. Head over to Flixist for more chances to win!

Windex not included

Get into today's contest to win a free Blu-ray copy of Glass!

M. Knight Shyamalan's films have always been pretty divisive. That one about nature attacking Mark Wahlberg is pretty blech, but like most people I like The Sixth Sense. Most people usually have pretty mixed opinions about the rest, and will rank them somewhere in between those two extremes.

Ya gotta give credit to the dude, though -- he just keeps chugging along. Glass is the culmination of a series nearly 20 years in the making, so if you're a fan of the series, you can win a free Blu-ray copy!

Here's an official synopsis from Universal:

M. Night Shyamalan brings together two of his standout original films -- Unbreakable and Split -- in this explosive comic book thriller. Elijah Price, also known as Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), finds David Dunn (Bruce Willis) pursuing Kevin Wendell Crumb's superhuman figure, The Beast (James McAvoy), in a series of escalating encounters. Price, armed with secrets critical to both men, emerges as a shadowy orchestrator.

Since I haven't actually seen any of the movies, I'm going to provide my own synopsis from what I could gather from the trailer posted above. Enjoy.

The guy who farted out The Village and The Happening brings together two of his previous movies I haven't seen -- Bruce Willis Looks Mean and Holy Shit What's Going On -- in this weird-as-shit dramatic thriller. Sam Jackson Is In Every Movie Ever, played with aplomb by Sam Jackson, finds Old Hooded White Dude (the ghost of Bruce Willis) in an asylum or something. Uh, that's usually a bad thing, but I guess here it's not so bad. They talk and do some stuff while Meat Strongboy (James McAvoy, who's usually either wheelchair-bound or super strong in movies) runs naked on walls and flips out on cheerleaders and shit. Why is everyone so broody, and why do so many people whisper indoors?

Ok, that sounds about right. Get your copy today!

Contest: Win a Blu-ray copy of Arrow Video’s Terra Formars https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-arrow-videos-terra-formars/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-arrow-videos-terra-formars https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-arrow-videos-terra-formars/#respond Tue, 09 Apr 2019 22:30:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-arrow-videos-terra-formars/

These roaches don't seem very rad

Don't bug out with today's contest for a Blu-ray copy of Arrow Video's Terra Formars.

You guys know me well enough to know I don't know shit about anime, or manga, or any of that stuff. It's just not my bag. That said, I do like batshit insane stories though. So when I saw Takashi Miike directed a film based on a manga where giant cockroaches roam Mars carrying weapons and shit, I knew I had to get in on it.

And that means you get to get in on it, too, by winning a Blu-ray copy of Terra Formars!

Ok I'm going to do my best to explain to you what the hell is going on, here. So Earth sucks, yeah? It's overcrowded and we need to GTFO because there's like nothing left. So we sent some roaches and mold to Mars in hopes of beginning the process of colonization and adapting the planet to human life. After all, if a bunch of roaches knock off and die, at least it was like the grossest thing on Earth. So anyway, Earth sends a bunch of people to Mars a few years later to be like, "Yo waddup roaches." But, we get there, and the roaches have evolved into giant, bipedal, weapon-wielding mutants or something.

So of course, we try to fight the mutated roaches, but dude! Shit! They're too strong and fast and smart and stuff! Then some text in Japanese happens that I don't understand, but anyway the humans get bug powers, too. How that happens is unclear, but it wouldn't qualify for our It Came From Japan! tag if it wasn't weird or wacky in some way. So the bug-humans fight the human-bugs, and yep this sounds like a Takashi Miike kind of joint.

Ok, that's my synopsis. Please hold your applause until the end of the presentation.

To enter to win your copy, comment below telling us how we humans acquired bug powers on Mars. If you actually know the answer, you can spoil it for us, if you'd like. I'd prefer you try to dupe us, though! Throw us off our game. After all, It Came From Japan!, so pretty much anything you say could feasibly have happened in this movie. I'd believe pretty much anything at this point.

We have two Blu-ray copies to give away. You must have a United States shipping address in order to win. Winners will be drawn on Monday, April 15. Make sure to comment using a Dtoid account with your current email address on file. New users can sign up here to trick me into understanding the plot of this very strange movie!

Danny DeVito’s voice was used as a test for Detective Pikachu https://www.destructoid.com/danny-devitos-voice-was-used-as-a-test-for-detective-pikachu/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=danny-devitos-voice-was-used-as-a-test-for-detective-pikachu https://www.destructoid.com/danny-devitos-voice-was-used-as-a-test-for-detective-pikachu/#respond Tue, 19 Mar 2019 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/danny-devitos-voice-was-used-as-a-test-for-detective-pikachu/

We weren't good enough for it to happen

From the earliest moments that we knew about Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, Destructoid was at the forefront trying to get Danny DeVito, the only logical choice, to voice the titular role. While ultimately we didn't get the right actor, we at least have a little validation for our failed quest.

Speaking with Game Informer during a visit to the production studio, the producers of the film made it aware that they had heard the cries of the many who wanted one of the greatest living dark comedy actors to voice a furry little electric rat. So much so that initial animation tests were done for Detective Pikachu using Danny DeVito's voice.

Of course they didn't drag DeVito into the studio for a simple test, they just used voice samples from his longstanding body of work. If there is any good left in this world, we will get the test reel footage as a special feature on the home release of the movie with this scene as the audio base.

Even if we won't get to hear DeVito's voice in the final cut of the film, the producers were seemingly giddy to reveal that a little piece of DeVito has made it into the character. While they couldn't quote specifics, Cale Boyter was quoted saying "I can’t give away too much, but in terms of where the story goes and how it evolves, we had to sort of look at everything, including what fans weren’t seeing yet to make the decision. But that spirit of Danny DeVito, I promise you, is still inside of Pikachu."

Detective Pikachu will release in theaters on May 10.

Why am I the way I am?

Enter our contest for a Blu-ray copy of The Greasy Strangler.

I don't have many words for this one, so just play along with me, here.

I've got two Blu-ray copies of The Greasy Strangler. Why? I don't know. I'm just plain broken, I guess. But now you have to take them.

I actually found a semi-SFW trailer! And it makes it kind of better. Depending on who you ask.

Here is the official synopsis of the film:

When Big Ronnie and his son Brayden meet female tourist Janet on Big Ronnie's Disco Walking Tour -- the best and only disco walking tour in the city -- a fight for Janet's heart erupts between father and son, and the infamous "Greasy Strangler" is unleashed.

Yep, that's what we're dealing with, here. I don't know why I do these things, but I do.

Why do I do these things? Answer that question below and you'll be entered to win a copy. I don't have an answer, so maybe one of you can tell me why I'm so drawn to this kind of stuff.

We have two Blu-rays to give away; you must have a United States shipping address to win. Winners will be drawn on Monday, March 18. Make sure to comment using a Dtoid account with your current email address on file. New users can sign up here to give me some free therapy.

The Greasy Strangler is available now from our friends over at MVD Entertainment Group. You can find more chances to win over at Flixist, if you're into that sort of thing.

Contest: Win a Blu-ray copy of Ralph Breaks the Internet https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-ralph-breaks-the-internet/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-ralph-breaks-the-internet https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-ralph-breaks-the-internet/#respond Fri, 22 Feb 2019 23:30:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-ralph-breaks-the-internet/

Stop breaking things, Ralph!

Help fix the internet with our contest for a Blu-ray copy of Ralph Breaks the Internet.

I'm 32, but I'll admit it: I still like Disney movies. I don't care who knows it. Aladdin is one of my favorites, and The Princess and the Frog did some really cool stuff with New Orleans. That one's underrated, to me.

Ralph Breaks the Internet does a good job of repping those two favorites of mine -- just check the header! We've got a Blu-ray copy to give away, so come win it!

If you're somehow unfamiliar with the movie, here's some words for ya!

Ralph Breaks the Internet welcomes back favorite cast and characters introduced six years ago, including John C. Reilly, who provides the voice of Ralph, and Sarah Silverman, who returns as the voice of Vanellope. Lending a virtual hand to Ralph and Vanellope is Shank, voiced by Gal Gadot, a tough-as-nails driver from a gritty online auto racing game called Slaughter Race, a place Vanellope wholeheartedly embraces -- so much so that Ralph worries he may lose the only friend he's ever had.

Yesss, voiced by Taraji P. Henson, the head algorithm and the heart and soul of the trend-making site BuzzzTube, makes Ralph a viral sensation. Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch return as the voices of Fix-It Felix Jr. and Sergeant Calhoun, respectively, and Disney Animation's good luck charm, actor Alan Tudyk was called on to voice a search engine named KnowsMore -- literally a know-it-all -- who runs a search bar and helps Ralph and Vanellope on their quest. Lots of exciting cameos are also featured in the film including a scene that reunites all of the original (living) Disney Princess voice cast.

I love Disney princesses.

To enter to win a copy, use the widget below to leave your name and email address. You can repeat daily for additional chances to win. For bonus entries, follow Dtoid and Flixist on Twitter and share our contest post with your friends.

While you're waiting for a winner to be drawn, tell us in the comments your favorite Disney princess. Mine's definitely Jasmine -- she's the best! And she has a pet tiger! And she seduced Jafar to trick him! She's bae.

We have one Blu-ray copy to give away between Dtoid and Flixist. Since this is a physical prize, shipping is restricted to the United States. Our winner will be drawn on Wednesday, February 27.

Ralph Breaks the Internet will be available on Blu-ray and digital on Tuesday, February 26, wherever movies are sold.

Fun for the whole family

You've got the part in today's contest for a Blu-ray copy of Arrow Video's release of Audition.

I don't feel like Takashi Miike or any of his films really need a whole lot of words to describe them. If you've seen them, you know what's up. If you haven't, go to the library and find one of them.

Or just win one here. We've got Audition up for grabs, so...uh...come grab it!

Having recently lost his wife, widower Shigeharu Aoyama devises a plan with a coworker to use their position at a film company to stage auditions to find the perfect woman. Luckily for him, he finds her! Then the movie ends and everything is really, really happy.

I'm not going to say anymore than this because you've either already seen it, or you haven't. Either way, I'm not going to spoil anything for you. Just watch it!

To enter to win, comment below telling us how you won the role when you auditioned to be someone's perfect mate. While many think my hairline did the trick, it was actually my genial demeanor and self-deprecating humor! But then I got on set and they quickly recast me with someone younger, more genial, and with a better hairline. Hollywood can be rough, man.

We have two Blu-ray copies to give away. As this is a physical prize, you must have a United States shipping address in order to win. Winners will be drawn on Monday, February 18. Make sure to comment using your Dtoid account, and that your profile is up to date with your current email address. New users can sign up here and tell us all about how your audition to be Dtoid's newest member went! I think you'll land the gig ;)

Arrow Video's release of Audition is available now from MVD Entertainment. Head over to our sister site Flixist for more chances to win!

Contest: Win a Blu-ray copy of Double Dragon https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-double-dragon/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-double-dragon https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-double-dragon/#respond Tue, 05 Feb 2019 23:30:00 +0000 https://www.destructoid.com/contest-win-a-blu-ray-copy-of-double-dragon/

ROBERT PATRICK

Just shut up and enter this contest to win a Blu-ray copy of Double Dragon.

I'M WRITING IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE I HAVE LEGITIMATELY BEEN WAITING MONTHS FOR THIS CONTEST. SERIOUSLY, I'VE BEEN COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS.

I'll cool it with the caps lock, but dudes, really, I love Double Dragon. It's awful and great and terrible and wonderful, and I want you to have this movie. Just enter my contest, already!

Normally I'd put some press material or some bullshit here, but I'm not going to do that today. I'm instead going to tell you how much I love this movie. The video game it's inspired by didn't make a whole lot of sense to begin with (something something Bimmy's girlfriend got kidnapped by a gang? Who cares, you just punch people), but this movie took that pretty basic concept and absolutely ran with it. It's a whole futuristic neonpunk dystopian nightmare of a film that's done about as competently as a fine china showing in a wrecking ball factory, and it's all the better for it. The dude from Party of Five beats up Robert Patrick and a mime gets kicked in the nuts in the trailer. It's incredible. The movie ends on a bad driver joke. It inspired a video game based on the movie, based on the video game. It's truly a disasterpiece. and one of my favorite movies of all time.

Legit, I love this movie. If you comment below saying it's not great, I'll come find you and beat you up. Scott Wolf style. Bad action choreography and everything.

To enter, comment below saying something nice about this movie. Anything nice at all. If you say something not nice about this movie, you're disqualified. And you're also uninvited to my pool party. I take this very, very seriously.

We have two Blu-rays to give away. Winners will be drawn on Monday, February 11. Make sure you comment using a Dtoid-generated Disqus account, and that your account is up to date with your current email address. New users can sign up here to say nice things about Double Dragon, one of my favorite movies.

Double Dragon is one of my favorite movies. You can buy it from my friends over at MVD Entertainment Group. Hit up Flixist for more chances to win this gem of a film.

Say watt?

Here's a jolt of good news for Pokemon fans, even if it might leave some of them thunderstruck. Detective Pikachu has sparked so much interest that production company Legendary Pictures is trying to capture lightning in a bottle by getting started on a sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary has hired Oren Uziel to write the script for a second Detective Pikachu. Uziel has writing credits for movies such as 22 Jump Street, The Cloverfield Paradox, and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie. He's also attached to the upcoming Mortal Kombat film.

This might seem a bit premature given that the first Detective Pikachu is still three months away from its silver screen premiere. But, given the reception to the first trailer, Detective Pikachu will almost certainly be a success from a box office viewpoint. Might as well get a head start on the inevitable.
